Barnes Wins Coin Toss, Appointed Vice Chair; Board Makes New Appointments

Featured Stories, News

District One Commissioner Jerry Barnes was appointed vice chair of the Pickens County Board of Commissioners yesterday during the board’s first regular meeting…by winning a coin toss! The position is appointed by the commission chairman. As such, during yesterday’s meeting Commission Chair Robert Jones flipped a coin to choose the vice chair. District Two Commissioner Becky Denney called heads, but when the coin landed the toss fell to District One Commissioner Jerry Barnes.

During the meeting, the board also made several government appointments. Glenda Thompson was reappointed to the Tax Assessors’ Board for a five year term, beginning January 1, 2013 and ending December 31, 2017. The board also appointed David Smith, filling Anna Lee Moss’ place, and to the assessors’ board. Nelson Mattern was also appointed to the assessors’ board. Philip Landrum III was reappointed as county attorney and Water Department Director Larry Coleman was appointed to the Coosawatee Regional Water and Sewer Authority, while Eric Wilmarth was appointed to the water authority for a three year term. Additionally, Deborah Watson was reappointed as the county clerk and Paula Peace as the deputy county clerk.

This is the first year with a new county government for Pickens County, moving from the sole commissioner format to a multi-person board. Although yesterday was the board’s first regular meeting, the board held a work session earlier this month. As such, Chairman Jones asked citizens to bear with the board as they refine the process of conducting meetings with the new form government. The board will hold its next work session on February 7th at 10:00 A.M. and its regular meeting on February 21st at 5:30 P.M.
