White Grounds Green in Pickens Spring Scrimmage
Team FYN Sports June 3, 2013
The Pickens Dragons held their annual Green & White spring scrimmage on Friday night, giving all of those in attendance the opportunity to get a sneak peak of the 2013 edition of the Dragons.
This year’s scrimmage boasted some revamped features from the previous years, as the varsity’s game was preceded by games featuring the middle schoolers from Jasper Middle School and Pickens County Middle School (who will be playing on a joint team starting next season) as well as the junior varsity squad and the ninth grade team.Once these emerging Dragons’ players finished up their time on the field, it was time for the varsity’s best to take on each other. The Green and White team featured a rather unusual sharing of certain key players in this matchup, as several players—including quarterbacks Tanner Brumby and Marcus Byrd along with running back Shannon Brooks—sported black jerseys, which meant that they would be eligible to play for both teams.
The scoring started for the Green squad just before the end of the first quarter, as Tanner Brumby connected with Jake Dean on a eleven yard touchdown to give the Green squad an early 6-0 lead (no extra points were attempted). The score remained 6-0 until Shannon Brooks’ 2 yard scamper into the end zone with 9:06 left in the third period tied the game back up at 6-6.
The Green team responded with another touchdown reception by Dean, who reeled in a pass and sprinted down the field to put his side back up 12-6 with 7:41 remaining in the third. The White team then answered the Green’s long receiving touchdown with one of their own, as Zach Hermann made a huge catch and run to tie the game back up 12-12 with a little under five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Deadlocked going into the final quarter of play, the White team drew first blood in the fourth, re-gaining the lead on a 2 yard run by Ty Prather. The Green team fought hard to tie the game back up, but the White side was determined to maintain their advantage. The White team was eventually able to extend their lead to 24-12 on a receiving touchdown by Prather, which would prove to be the final score.
Although it seems like all of the Pickens Dragons are ready for some football, the team still has a long way to go before the opening kickoff of the season. Along with the mandatory practices that are frequent during the summer off from school comes football camps, which this year includes a trip to Auburn and a NFL camp at East Hall High School.
