Last Night, the PHS football team held the end of season banquet at Chattahoochee Technical College’s Appalachian campus. The evening consisted of celebration and looking back on what was one of the most successful football seasons in PHS history. From finishing at 8-3, to making the playoffs for the first time since 2005, and hosting a playoff game for the first time since 2004, and of course beating Gilmer for the first time in five years. Last Friday, the Pickens High School Dragons football team hosted the arch region rival from up 515, the Gilmer High School Bobcats, in what was one of the most hyped and most important games in the rivalry. The winner would lock up the number two seed in 7-AAAA and host the three seed from 8-AAAA in the first round of the state playoffs. The Dragons warmed up in their normal green jersey’s but when they returned from the locker room they would emerge in all black for the blackout Dragon Nation held, as a surprise to everyone. To top it all off, it was Senior Night, and the Dragons used a second half shut out to take a 42-19 win and lock up a “winner take all” Region 7-AAAA championship game at Cartersville.
A big week for Pickens High School football started when the JV Dragons defeated Lumpkin County last Thursday 41-34 to finish the season at 6-1 and capture the league championship. Friday night, the varsity Dragons traveled to Catoosa County to take on the Generals of Heritage in what was a crucial game for both teams’ playoff hopes. The Dragons came in with a 3-1 region record, while the Generals had a 2-2 region record. It had been 3,275 days since the Dragons last appearance in the state playoffs, that number would fall to 0.
Last Friday, the Dragons hosted the Panthers of Ridgeland High School in what was the region opener for both teams. Prior to kickoff, Mr and Miss PHS for 2014-15 were crowned as Andrew Haygood and Emma Shipley-Schmitt would reign supreme. Coming into the ball game, the Dragons was reigning over opponents, scoring 43 ppg and giving up only an impressive 16.7 ppg during their 3-game winning streak. Pickens looked to continue that trend as the Dragons welcomed a Panther squad that is primarily run oriented. The Panthers pulled out the victory, 35-28.
It was a beautiful Friday night as the Dragons hosted the now 5A Knights of River Ridge for their tune up to the 2014 season. The Knights won the coin toss but deferred to the second half, giving the Dragons first crack at scoring. (more…)
The Pickens Dragonettes and Dragons had no trouble taking care of business at home on Friday, January 17th, as both squads took care of their opponents from Cedartown High School in two blowout victories. (more…)
The Pickens Dragons made the trip to Rossville, Georgia on Friday night and promptly pulled off something that most expected the team would be unable to do, as the offense racked up 441 yards on the ground and beat the Ridgeland Panthers, last year’s AAAA state runner-up, at Bowers and Painter Field by the final score of 41-28. The Pickens Dragons held their annual Green & White spring scrimmage on Friday night, giving all of those in attendance the opportunity to get a sneak peak of the 2013 edition of the Dragons.
This year’s scrimmage boasted some revamped features from the previous years, as the varsity’s game was preceded by games featuring the middle schoolers from Jasper Middle School and Pickens County Middle School (who will be playing on a joint team starting next season) as well as the junior varsity squad and the ninth grade team.
