The Pickens High School Dragons baseball is on a hot streak, winning three games in a row. After Pickens procured its first home win of the season, rocking Rockdale 11-3, the Dragons burned the Mountaineers of North Murray with two straight defeats. PHS scored a total of 25 runs in the two wins (15-10, 10-5).The Dragons first met the Mountaineers on the road. Pickens picked up three runs in the top of the first inning taking a lead that would not be relinquished. North Murray countered with a run scored in the bottom of the second.

The third saw the Dragons fire get hot again, as Pickens pounded out three more runs for a 6-1 lead, which ballooned to 11-1 after Pickens pounded out five runs in the top of the fourth.

The bottom of the fourth saw the Mountaineers mount somewhat of a comeback, as North Murray cut the lead to 11-8 after scoring seven runs.

Pickens picked up four more runs in the top of the fifth and gave up only two more runs to secure the 15-10 victory.

Walker Lawrence treated the Mountaineers’ pitchers like “Herschel” did Bill Bates, as he led the team with five RBI, three hits, and one home run. Dylan Clark and Eric Justice tied for second in RBI with two each. Clark also tied with Cameron Gregory for the team lead in runs scored with three.

Tyler Garner pitched three and two thirds innings with four strike outs. Cope Chandler pitched two and one third innings with two strike outs, and Travis Huffman got the save with one inning pitched. He recorded two strike outs and faced four batters giving up one hit.

The second match up with the Mountaineers, began as a bitter battle with North Murray taking a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the second inning. The Dragons’ offense fired off four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 5-2 lead.

Three more runs in the bottom of the third saw the Pickens lead grow to 8-2; however, North Murray’s three runs in the top of the fourth cut the lead to three, 8-5. The Dragons added a run in the bottoms of the fourth and fifth inning securing the 10-5 win.

Carey Cunningham led the team with three RBI on the strength of a three run home run. Garner also had a home run on the day, and finished second with two RBI in the game. Luke Burch led the team with .667 day at plate going two for three with one run scored.

Justice pitched all seven innings with strike outs and 1.00 ERA on the day.

Pickens is 4-5 on the season with a home game against Murray scheduled for Friday March 21st at 5:30pm.
