Dragons End Brief Losing Streak With Win Against The Spartans

This Past Friday, the Dragons varsity basketball team traveled to take on the Spartans of West Hall in non region action. Pickens, coming off of two closely contested region losses, looked to get back on track before the upcoming holiday tournament held at PHS. The Dragons were able to do just that on Friday.A high scoring opening quarter saw both offenses get it going early. The Spartans however, took the lead going to the second quarter, 23-17 over the Dragons. Pickens closed the gap in the second quarter on the strength of a 14-9 run to trim the Spartans lead to 32-31 going into the break.

The Dragons came out in the third quarter and continued the momentum gained in the second quarter to propel themselves in front of West Hall going to the final quarter of play, 51-45. The fourth quarter saw back and forth scoring much like the beginning of the ball game with both teams scoring 17 points a piece. Pickens hit some clutch free throws to seal the win of the Spartans, 68-62.

The Dragons are now 8-4 on the season and 2-3 in 7AAAA region play

Leading the way for Pickens last Friday would be:

Shannon Brooks: 20 points, 1 assist, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals

Clay Wigington: 15 points, 1 assist, 6 points, and a steal

Travis Huffman: 11 points

Holden Roop: 10 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and a steal

Trent Rizoti: 7 points, and 5 rebounds

Doug Timms chipped in 5 points

Pickens will now take full advantage of the winter break to rest and get themselves ready for the Pickens Holiday Tournament. The Dragons will be the final boys game each night with their first game being against Woodstock on the 27th. Tip off scheduled for 7:30 pm.
