Jasper, GA – The Georgia Mountain Regional Commission (GMRC) Contract was number four on the Board of Commissioners Work Session agenda this month.
The contract proposed working with other communities to receive new and updated aerial photography of Pickens County. The cost of obtaining the new photos would be $17,875.53. This would be part of our budget submitted for the year.
Included in the contract would be an acquisition of Lidar at $5,000. This would allow visual elevation models of every square inch of our county. Grants are available through GMRC and depending on how many are received the cost could become minimal.
All federal, state, and private agencies rely on the use of Lidar for incidents such as flooding, new constructions, and road work. Georgia Mountain Regional Commission views it as very beneficial to our community.
The county’s flood insurance stated if we obtain a Lidar of the county, we could receive current flood maps.
If the contract is approved at the next Board of Commissioners meeting, then citizens will be able to see current photography of Pickens county in January, 2018.
