‘Nettes fall in region meeting with Gilmer

The Pickens girls basketball team (6-4, 3-1 Region 6-4A), came into the game against the Gilmer Lady ‘Cats looking to shake off a tough loss to Gordon Central last Saturday and to keep their region record spotless. Of the three region games the ‘Nettes have played, two have been on the road. Both teams came in with identical 3-0 region records.
Early on in the first quarter, both teams got some quick buckets. Mykenzie Weaver got the first five points for the ‘Nettes to give them an early 5-2 lead. From there the Lady ‘Cats made a big run. Gilmer went on a 15-0 run to give them a 17-5 lead. To their credit, Pickens battled back and outscored the Lady ‘Cats 9-7. Gilmer led 24-14 going to the second.
In the second quarter, the ‘Nettes battled back, cutting the Lady Cat lead down to four late in the first half. A 5-0 run by Gilmer to close the half made it 46-37 Lady ‘Cats going into the break.
In the third quarter the Lady ‘Cats were able to add to their lead by outscoring the ‘Nettes 25-15. The run was led by Elly Callihan, Jalynn Ledford, and Emma Callihan. Going to the fourth, Gilmer led Pickens, 71-52.
In the fourth, the Lady ‘Cats were able to keep their offensive output going on the way to a 94-67 win. Gilmer outscored Pickens 48-30 in the second half on the way to the win.

Next up for the ‘Nettes is the Gordon Lee Holiday Tournament. This three-day event starts Thursday, Dec. 17. Pickens, will head to Chattooga to take on the Lady Indians on Thursday at Chattooga. Tip off for that one is set for 7 p.m. They will again play at Chattooga on Friday, with an opponent yet to be determined. To wrap the tournament up, they will play at Gordon Lee on Saturday. The opponent there is yet to be determined as well.
