On Friday afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled down to Flowery Branch to take on the Lady Falcons in the first round of the GHSA Girls 4A State Tournament. Pickens, came into the game as the #4 seed from region 6 & Flowery Branch came in as the region champions of region 7, & the #3 ranked girls team in 4A.
In the opening quarter, the Nettes got off to a quick start, but the Lady Falcons were able to take the lead going to the 2nd, 24-7. In the 2nd quarter, the offense for Pickens really picked up and they were able to do some good things against a tough Lady Falcon defense. Flowery Branch barely outscored the Nettes 18-17, to take a 42-24 lead into the break.
The 3rd quarter saw the Nettes get things going on both ends of the floor, as they outscored the Lady Falcons 14-12, but Flowery Branch still held the lead, 54-38. In the 4th, the Nettes made a little run to begin the quarter, but the Lady Falcons were able to pull away at the end, 70-43.

This past Friday afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team was once again in Dalton to take part in the consolation game of the 6-AAAA Region Tournament. Their opponent, the Gilmer Lady Cats. This would be the 4th meeting between the two this season. The winner, would be the regions 3rd seed in the state tournament. The other, will represent the region as it’s 4th seed.
The Lady Cats, jumped out to a quick start over the Nettes in the opening quarter of this one. Going to the 2nd, Gilmer held a 21-8 lead over Pickens. The 2nd quarter scoring was very close as the Lady Cats just did outscore the Nettes 8-7. Going into the break, Gilmer maintained their lead over Pickens, 29-15.
In the 3rd, the Nettes’ began to bounce back. The 3rd quarter saw the Nettes’ outscore the Lady Cats 18-11, to cut the Gilmer lead down to 40-33, going to the 4th. The 4th quarter, saw the Lady Cats hold on to secure the win, 52-43.

Pickens, will now turn it’s attention to the Girls 4-A State Tournament as they will travel to Gainesville to take on the #1 seed out of region 7, the Flowery Branch Lady Falcons. Game time & date are unknown as of this writing, but it will be next week.
Earlier tonight, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled back to Southeast Whitfield for a semifinal showdown with the #1 seed coming into the 6-AAAA Region Tournament, the Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins. The winner, would move on to take on the Heritage Lady Generals in the championship game.
In the 1st quarter, the Nettes got off to a 4-0 start. The Lady Bruins, were able to take the lead by the end of the 1st, 17-10. In the 2nd quarter, Pickens got going a little bit, & cut into the Northwest Whitfield lead. At the half, the Lady Bruins led, 27-22.
In the 3rd, the Nettes’ got right back into the game using an 11-6 quarter run. Going to the 4th & final quarter, we we’re all tied at 33. The 4th quarter, was back & forth with the Nettes coming back after trailing 39-33, to take the lead. Northwest Whitfield, was able to make a late run, outscoring Pickens 13-9, to get the win, 46-42.

Pickens, will be back at Southeast Whitfield on Friday as they will battle the Gilmer Lady Cats for 3rd place. Tip off is scheduled for 4 pm.
This week’s #TeamFYNSports Players of the Week are Sarah Morris & Owen Moss. Both the Nettes and the Dragons had tough week’s this week going 0-2 against region competition.
Sarah Morris, had a good week despite the tough losses. Morris plays good defense & when rolling, can light up the scoreboard quickly. Against Gilmer, she had 4 points, & 1 rebound. Against Northwest Whitfield, she finished with 12 points & 2 rebounds.
Owen Moss is one half of the starting sophomore duo along with Tucker Lowe. Moss, is very quick with the ball. He uses that quickness to get into the lane & help on defense. Against Gilmer, Moss finished with 2 points, 2 assists, & 5 rebounds. Against the Bruins, Moss had 9 points, 1 assist, 3 rebounds, & 1 steal.
Earlier today the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made their way up to Dalton for the first round of the 2019 6-AAAA Region Tournament being held at Southeast Whitfield. Coming into the game, the Nettes, were the #4 seed & their opponent, the LaFayette Lady Ramblers, were the #5 seed. The winner, would not only punch their ticket to the 4A State Tournament, but advance to the semi-finals against the defending region champions Northwest Whitfield.
The Lady Ramblers came out and took control of the game early. This one looked like it had the makings of a tight one as the two teams headed to the 2nd quarter tied at 17. The 2nd quarter saw it stay very competitive. The Nettes, outscored LaFayette 15-9, with Sarah Morris hitting a three right before the buzzer to give Pickens a 32-26 lead at the half.
In the 3rd quarter, the Nettes, started to get a handle on things. Using great defense in the frame, Pickens outscored the Lady Ramblers 15-10 to increase their lead to 47-36, going to the 4th. Powered by a tremendous effort of defense in the 2nd half, the Nettes got the win over LaFayette, 58-44.

As mentioned above, with the win, the Nettes now advance to the 4A State Tournament, & move on to the semi-finals where they will take on the #4 seed Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins. Tip off is scheduled for 7 pm on Thursday.
Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders for the regular season finale & Senior night. This game, was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but winter weather forced it to be moved to last night. Prior to the game beginning, Senior Torie Williams was recognized for scoring her 1,000th career point last Friday at Northwest Whitfield. Williams, became the 21st Nettes player with 1,000 career points, & the 2nd this season to join the club (Junior Mykenzie Weaver hit the feat prior to Christmas).
In the first quarter, it was neck & neck with both teams. The home team held a 11-8 lead over the Lady Raiders going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, Pickens extended their lead turning great defense into offense as they outscored Southeast Whitfield 25-9 in the frame. Williams, also broke her own record for most three’s in a season with the two she made in the quarter, Going into the half, the Nettes led, 36-17.
In the 3rd, the Nettes’ carried over the defense they displayed in the 2nd quarter as it led to some great transition opportunities for Pickens. The Nettes’, outscored the Lady Raiders 18-5 in the 3rd to take a 54-22 lead into the 4th. The Nettes’, closed things out in the 4th taking this one, 67-31.

Pickens, will now turn it’s attention to the 6-AAAA region tournament next week being held at Southeast Whitfield. The Nettes’, are the number 4 seed and will take on the number 5 seeded Lafayette Lady Ramblers in the first round on Monday. A win there puts you in the state tournament. Tip off is scheduled for 4:30.
This week’s #TeamFYNSports Sports Writer Players of the Week are Sarah Morris & Tucker Lowe. The Dragons & Dragonettes had a busy, & tough week this past week with three road games. Both teams went 1-2 in those road games as the Nettes were able to pick up a win against Christain Heritage, & the Dragons stunned Northwest Whitfield.
Sarah Morris, has become a valuable piece for the Nettes in this her Junior season. Morris, had a good week this week contributing in the three road games Pickens played in. Morris finished with 7 points, 2 rebounds, & a steal against Gilmer, & 4 points, 1 assist, 2 rebounds, & a steal against Christian Heritage.
Tucker Lowe, is the three point marksman for the Dragons. The Sophomore guard contributed to a lot of points for Pickens in their games this week, & also stepped things up on the defensive side as well. Lowe, had 12 points, 3 assists, & 1 steal against Gilmer, 21 points, 3 assists, & 3 rebounds against Northwest Whitfield, & 12 points, 1 assist, & 1 steal against Christian Heritage.
Both the Dragons & Dragonettes have one game this week & it’s set for now to be Tuesday against Southeast Whitfield for Senior Night. With the impending winter weather headed this way, keep an eye on any potential moving around of games this week.
Yesterday afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled back up towards the Dalton area to take on the Christian Heritage Lady Lions in their final non-region game of the regular season. After tough region losses to Gilmer & Northwest Whitfield this week, Pickens looked to end the week on a high note going into the final week of the regular season.
The Lady Lions got off to a quick start in this one, running out to a 12-5 lead after one. The Nettes’, were able to cut into the Christian Heritage lead ever so slightly in the 2nd quarter outscoring the Lady Lions 9-8. Going into the break, Christian Heritage held a 21-14 lead over Pickens.
In the 3rd, the Nettes’ were able to chip away again at the lead of the Lady Lions. Outscoring Christian Heritage 15-12 in the frame, Pickens only trailed 33-29 going to the 4th. In the 4th, Pickens took full control of the game. Outscoring the Lady Lions 17-8, the Nettes’ were able to pull off the comeback and get the win, 46-41.

Pickens, is scheduled to host the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders on Tuesday at 6 for the regular season finale & Senior Night. As you might be aware of, there is a winter storm system on the way that is set to make it’s way in this area on Tuesday. As of now the game is still set for Tuesday, but it may very well change.
