Nettes drop road game against Northwest Whitfield

After upsetting their rival and 6-AAAA num. 1 seed Gilmer Lady Cats 70-66 in overtime on Tuesday, the Pickens Dragonettes (15-8, 8-3) traveled to Tunnel Hill to take on the Northwest Whitfield Bruins (18-6, 10-1) in a game where a potential tie for second place in the region was on the line. In a tough game, it was the Lady Bruins who came away with the 40-28 win.

 

In the first quarter, it was Cassidy Richards who got the scoring started for the Nettes with a pair of free throws. Northwest Whitfield tied it with a bucket to make it 2 a piece. Sarah Morris, who came up big in the game against Gilmer, hit a three to make it 5-3 after the Lady Bruins took the lead with a free throw. After Northwest Whitfield went on a 5-0 run, Mykenzie Weaver hit a three to tie things up at 8 as we headed to the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the Lady Bruins came out on a 4-0 run with a pair of free throws and a bucket. Weaver, hit another three to make it 12-11. A big point in the game came in the second quarter when Weaver was called for her third foul. After that occurred, Northwest Whitfield went on a 5-0 run and led the Nettes 17-11 at the half in a low scoring affair.

Weaver got things going in the third quarter with a bucket to cut the Lady Bruins lead down to 17-13. Northwest Whitfield would then open up the game a little bit with a 12-0 run making it 29-13. The Nettes, outscored the Lady Bruins 6-3 for the rest of the quarter, but trailed going to the fourth, 32-19.

After a bucket by Weaver cut the Northwest Whitfield lead down to 34-21 in the fourth, the Lady Bruins went on a 6-0 run to make it 40-21. The Nettes closed the game out strong on a 7-0 run, but Northwest Whitfield came away with the win, 40-28.

The Nettes, will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they will take on the Adairsville Lady Tigers in non-region action. This game is a makeup game after weather forced it to be postponed. Tip off is set for 4 pm.
