Celebrate DiKembe Mutumbo Day
Team FYN Sports August 18, 2015
On Tuesday, Sept. 1st, Chairman John H. Eaves, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, and the Atlanta Hawks will honor NBA great, Dikembe Mutumbo. The ceremony will take place at 9 am at the Fulton County Government Center Atrium located at 141 Pryor Street, SW, Atlanta, GA 30303.
Mutumbo played 18 seasons in the NBA and held down the paint for the Hawks from 1996-2000 before being traded in 2001. Mutumbo is known for his trademark finger wag which he would flash after a block. He stands only behind Hakeem “the dream” Olajuwon as the NBA’s best shot blockers. Mutumbo received the NBA Defensive Player of the Year four times and was an 8-time all star.
For all of his professional accomplishments, Mutumbo is celebrated for his contributions to humanitarian work. In 1997, he started the Dikembe Mutumbo Foundation to help better the living conditions in his native Democratic Republic of Congo. That same year, the Foundation began plans for a $29 million, 300-bed hospital in the capitol city, Kinshasa.
Ground would be broken in 2001, but construction would not start until 2004 as Mutumbo had trouble getting donations for the project even after donating $3.5 million of his own money. By August, 14th, 2006, Mutumbo had donated $15 million to the completion of the hospital and was opened on Sept. 2nd, 2006. The hospital is named after Dikembe’s mother, Biamba Marie Mutumbo, who died from a stroke in 1997.
When the hospital opened in 2007, it was the first of it’s kind in that area in 40 years. It sits on a 12-acre site just outside Kinshasa in Masnia, where almost a quarter of the city’s 7.5 million live in poverty.

Opinion, Team FYN Sports July 6, 2012
For those sports fan that are deeply enamored with the Major League All-Star game coming up shortly, and those just counting down until football season, the NBA’s annual free agent frenzy has begun in a big way. LT’s 2011 Final Football Thoughts and Then Some
Opinion, Team FYN Sports February 8, 2012
The Super Bowl has come and gone, Eli “More Rings” Manning, beat Tom “Marsha” Brady and Bill Belicheat to claim the fourth super bowl for the New Jersey Giants. “Slick” Saban beat “Time” Les Miles for the SEC’s sixth straight Bull Crap System National Championship. The Super Bowl is always bittersweet for me, because on one hand it’s the biggest game, and on the other it means FOOTBALL IS OVER. (more…)
LT’s New Year Sports Thoughts
Opinion, Team FYN Sports January 5, 2012
To quote Eddie Murphy in “Trading Places,” “Merry New Year” I know the New Year is a few days old, but that’s okay, my New Year doesn’t begin until after the bowl season. Speaking of bowl games, did anybody actually go to bowl games this year? There were quite a few bowl games that had more empty seats than a Jennifer Aniston movie. (more…)
The Truth About Atlanta Apathy
Opinion, Team FYN Sports May 17, 2011
Fans of Atlanta teams have had a bad rap from national pundits for far too long. I for one am sick and tired of the hog wash that is, “Atlanta fans are terrible.” It’s not true at all. Fans of Atlanta, or as Awesomevile from Dawsonville of Squidbillies fame would say “Etlanta,” teams are an extremely passionate bunch. The problem is we have been repeatedly tricked into believing that our team, be it the Braves, Falcons, Hawks, and soon to be relocating, Thrashers, will actually end a postseason holding up the championship trophy; only to watch as our team losses, often in embarrassing fashion, yet again.
