Nettes advance to Sweet 16

Jasper, Ga — The AAA Girls State Basketball Tournament began on Tuesday, February 24th as the Pickens Dragonettes, hosted the Upson-Lee Lady Knights. The Nettes, came into the tournament as the #6 seed. The Lady Knights, came into the tournament as the #27 seed. After a back and forth first quarter, the Nettes, were able to pull away to pick up the win, 68-39 to advance to the Sweet 16.

 

The Lady Knights, would get things started with a three by Ja’Kalah Holmes. Freshman Darbi Stanley, answered that with a three of her own to tie the game. After a bucket by Holmes, Stanley and Ellison Steinhauer, would give the Nettes the lead after back to back baskets. Holmes, carrying the Lady Knights early on, would hit her second three of the quarter to make it 8-7.

Jamiya Carthon, would then complete an and-1 play to put the Lady Knights up 11-7. Back to back buckets by Steinhauer, would tie the game at 11. Holmes, would hit her third three of the quarter to put the Lady Knights up 14-11. Reagan Ludington, would end the first quarter on a 6-0 run as she would hit a three, and then complete an and-1 play to make it 17-14 Nettes heading to the second quarter.

 

Bree Jewell, would open the scoring in the second quarter as her three would put the Nettes up 20-14. Back to back buckets from Kynzlee Harris and Shatavia King, would cut the lead down to 20-18. Stanley, would complete an and-1 play to make it 23-18. That would kick off a 13-0 run to end the first half as Tania Rivera, Stanley, and Steinhauer would contribute to the run. At the break, the Nettes were out in front, 33-18.

 

The Lady Knights, would get a basket from Lakyzhia Miller to open the second half. Rivera, would then hit three and then complete an and-1 play to make it 39-20. A three by Stanley, would add a three to make it 42-20. Jabria Riddle, would split a pair of free throws to end the run. Miller, would score her second basket of the quarter to cut the lead to 42-23. Stanley, would hit another three to make it 45-23.

Miller, leading her team in the third would hit a jumper to make it 45-25. Steinhauer, would then start a 9-0 run with 7 straight points. Freshman Khloe Pruett, would cap off the run with a layup to make it 54-25. A pair of free throws by Miller, would end the run and make it 54-27 heading to the fourth quarter.

 

Harris, would get the fourth quarter going with a bucket to make it 54-29. Skyler Lathem, would get into the score book with a corner three to make it 57-29. After a layup by Stanley, Carthon and Holmes, would answer with their own 5-0 run as the Nettes led it, 59-34. Pruett, would end the run with a pair of free throws. Pruett, would then be rewarded for running the floor as she would make a layup to give the Nettes a 63-34.

Ruby Flatt, would take advantage of a fast break opportunity and hit a three that had the home crowd on their feet. Riddle, would end the run with a three to make it 66-37. Elin Porio, would do a good job of getting an offensive rebound and finishing with a put back layup to make it 68-37. A late jumper by King, would give us a final score of 68-39.

Nettes defeat Lady Spartans in OT thriller

Jasper, Ga — It was Senior Night on Tuesday, February 3rd as the Pickens Dragonettes, took on the Lady Spartans of Greter Atlanta Christian in a battle of the top two teams in 6-AAA. The Nettes, came into the game riding a four game win streak, and were looking to avenge an early season loss to the Lady Spartans. It took overtime, but the Nettes were able to pull off a big win, 62-59.

 

The Lady Spartans, would take an early lead to start the game as Milan Johnson would hit a three. The lone Senior for the Nettes, Ellison Steinhauer, would get the Nettes on the board with a layup. Johnson and Barri Newman, would then combine to go on an 8-0 run to make it 11-2. After a quarter of shots just not falling for the Nettes, a three by Freshman Darbi Stanley, would cut the lead to 11-5 heading to the second quarter.

 

Stanley, would begin the second quarter the way she ended the first quarter as her second three of the first half would cut the lead to 11-8. A bucket by Dru Jeckewicz, would make it a five point game. That basket would be the start of a 6-0 run by the Lady Spartans as they would take a 17-8 lead. A three by Reagan Ludington, would trim the lead down to six.

After a free throw make by the Lady Spartans, Steinhauer, would go on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 18. Another 6-0 run by the Lady Spartans, would give them a 24-18 lead. A layup by Khloe Pruett, would put an end to the run and make it 24-20. After a basket by Jeckewicz, Pruett, would hit a three to make 26-23. A layup by Newman, would again make it a five point game.

As the time drained down on the first half, Ludington, would slice through the defense and hit a floater to cut the Lady Spartans lead to 28-25 at the break.

 

Ludington, would start the second half with another bucket to cut it to 28-27. After a basket by Jeckewicz, Ludington would hit a long jumper to again make it a one point game. A 4-0 run by the Lady Spartans, would extend their lead back to five. A bucket by Steinhauer, would end the run and make it a three point game. Another 4-0 run by the Lady Spartans, would stretch the lead out to seven.

Ludington and Steinhauer, would respond by combining to go on a 5-0 run to cut the lead back down to two. After a basket by Onyekachi Ele-Oroko, Steinhauer and Skyler Lathem, would end the third quarter by combining to make six straight free throws to give the Nettes a 42-40 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

 

Jeckewicz, would begin the fourth quarter by making a pair of free throws to tie the game at 42. After a basket by Steinhauer, the Lady Spartans, would go on a 6-0 run to make it a four point game. The Nettes, would counter as Tania Rivera, Stanley, and Steinhauer would combine to go on an 8-0 run to make it 52-48. The Lady Spartans, would answer that by going on a 7-0 run to take a 55-52 lead.

With the clock winding down, Steinahuer, would take the layup to cut the lead to one. Jeckewicz, would make a pair of free throws to give the Lady Spartans a three point lead. With 6 seconds to go, the ball was in Steinhauer’s hands. She would get to a spot and put up a shot over two defenders and hit it to tie the game at 57 to send it to overtime.

 

Jermani Govan, would get things going in overtime with a layup to give the Lady Spartans a two point lead. A three by Steinhauer, would give the Nettes a one point advantage. Later on, Steinhauer, would make a pair of free throws to extend the lead to three. The Lady Spartans, would have a couple of chances to tie the game in the final seconds, but they would be no good as the Nettes come away with the win, 62-59.

The Nettes, will begin a three game road trip to end the regular season on Friday, February 6th as they make the trip up to Cleveland to take on the White County Lady Warriors. Tip off is set for 6 pm.

Nettes open Thanksgiving Classic with win

Jasper, Ga — The PHS Thanksgiving Classic began on Saturday, November 22nd with eight teams, four on each side, competing in a round robin style format. Earlier games saw Woodstock defeat Gilmer in overtime in girls action. Darlington, would defeat Chattahoochee on the boys side. The Nettes, in a tightly contested game with 6A North Cobb, came away with a 60-54 win.

 

The Lady Warriors, would get the scoring started after a jumper by Hananiah Bell. The Nettes, would counter with back to back to back threes by Ellison Steinhauer, Tania Rivera, and Darbi Stanley to make it 9-2. A bucket by Jordyn Cowan, would put an end to the Nettes run. Stanley, would hit her second three of the quarter to make it 12-4. A three by Bell, would cut the lead to 12-7.

After a basket by Jaidyn Taylor made it 12-9, back to back buckets from Steinhauer and Reagan Ludington, would give the Nettes a 16-9 lead after one quarter of play.

 

Steinhauer, would continue the run to begin the second quarter as the Nettes built a 9 point lead. The Lady Warriors, would then rattle off a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to three. After a timeout by the Nettes, Ludington, would end the run to make it 20-15. After a bucket by the Lady Warriors, Steinhauer and Stanley, would combine to go on a 5-0 run to make it 25-17.

A basket by Taylor, would cut the Nettes lead down to six heading into halftime. At the break, Pickens led North Cobb, 25-19.

 

The Lady Warriors, would begin the second half with a 4-0 run to cut the lead down to two. A pair of free throws by Steinhauer, would make it 27-23. After a basket by Taylor, Steinhauer, would go on a 5-0 run to stretch the lead out to 32-25. A three by Isabella Vargo, would make it a four point game. Ludington, would then split a pair of free throws to make it 33-28.

After Steinhauer made the first of two free throw attempts, she would have to come out due to a spot pf blood on her jersey. Since they couldn’t get the blood out in the allotted time, Rivera, would come in and take and make the second free throw to make it 35-28. Caleigh Hofford, would then drill a corner three to make it a 10 point game. After a three by Vargo, Steinhauer, who had come back in, made a pair of free throws to make it 40-31.

Vargo, would then hit another three to cut the lead to 6. After a bucket by Steinhauer, Taylor, would make a layup while getting fouled. She would hit the free throw to make it 42-37. Ludington, would come back with her own and-1 play to stretch the lead to 8. Bell, would end the third quarter scoring with a pair of free throws and the Nettes would lead it, 45-39 heading into the fourth.

 

The Nettes, would go on a 5-0 run to begin the fourth as Skyler Lathem would make a layup and Stanley would hit her fourth three of the night to make it 50-39. After Taylor split a pair of free throws, Bell, would make a three to cut the lead to 7. Steinhauer, would stretch the lead back to 9 after a pair of free throws. After a bucket by the Lady Warriors, Khloe Pruett and Stanley would make back to back layups to give the Nettes a 56-45 lead.

Taylor, would convert her second and-1 play to cut the lead to 8. After both teams traded baskets, Taylor and Vargo, would go on a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 6. The Nettes, were able to play keep away in the last remaining seconds as they would hang on to win it, 60-54.

The Nettes, will be back in action on Monday, November 24th for the second day of the PHS Thanksgiving Classic as they take on the Woodstock Lady Wolverines. Tip off time is set for 6 pm.
