Nettes open region play with win at Gilmer

Ellijay, Ga — The region portion of the schedule tipped off on Tuesday, December 5th as the Nettes made the trip up 515 to take on the Gilmer Lady Cats in the opening game of the 7-AAA schedule. Coming into the game, the Nettes were 5-0, and ranked 4th in AAA. The Lady Cats, came into the game with a 2-2 record having earned wins over Murray County and Sonoraville. The Nettes, got off to a fast start in this one as they opened region play with a 56-26 win.

 

In the first quarter, the Nettes started off quickly going on a 13-0 run to begin the game. The Lady Cats got on the board with a bucket to make it 13-2. After a basket by Bella Hopkins, Lucy Ray stepped to the line and hit both free throws to make it 15-4. Reagan Ludington ended the first quarter scoring with a three to make it 18-4 Nettes going to the second quarter.

 

The Lady Cats, would get on the board first in the second quarter as Bree Burnette made a layup. She would follow up by making the free throw to make it 18-7. Sophia Riblet, would then split a pair of free throws to cut the Nettes lead down to 18-8. A three pointer from Ludington ended the 4-0 run from the Lady Cats to make it 21-8. Riblet, would go back to the line and this time make both free throws to make it 21-10.

The Nettes, would then go on a 7-0 run as Caroline Mullins made a basket and two free throws, and Hopkins hit a three to make it 28-10. Burnette, made a basket and the free throw to cut it to 28-13. The first half ended with Ellison Steinhauer making a bucket as well as two free throws to give the Nettes a 32-13 lead at the half.

 

Much like the second quarter, the third quarter began with the Lady Cats getting on the board with a basket to make it 32-15. The Nettes, would then go on a 16-0 run. Mullins, Steinhauer, Brylee Deering, and Ludington all contributed to the run. Aliza Chastain ended the big run from the Nettes with a bucket. Mullins, ended the quarter scoring with a layup to make it 50-17 going to the fourth.

 

The Nettes, began the shortened fourth quarter with a 6-0 run as Hopkins hit two shots and Mullins hit one to make it 56-17. The Lady Cats, would end the game on a 9-0 run to give them some momentum heading into their next game. The Nettes, moved to 6-0, but more importantly, 1-0 in 7-AAA play with the 56-26 win.

The Nettes, will be back in non-region action on Friday, December 8th as they head to Calhoun to take on the Sonoraville Lady Phoenix. The Nettes defeated the Lady Phoenix 74-61 on November 20th as part of the Pickens Thanksgiving Tournament. Tip off for this one is set for 7 pm.

Jasper, Ga — On Tuesday, December 6th, 7-AAA region play began. The 515 rivalry made its way to the court. Back on November 22nd, the Nettes and Lady Cats faced each other in the ETC Tip-Off Tournament. On that night, the Nettes came away with a 67-39 victory. This go around, would be a little bit more important as it was a region game. While the Nettes may not have had the best of shooting nights, they were able to come away with a 50-29 win over the Lady Cats.

 

Emmie Moore got the scoring started for the Nettes in the first quarter as she hit a 3 pointer to make it 3-0. Caroline Mullins, Brylee Deering, Ellison Steinhauer, and Emery Bryant all scored for the Nettes in the first quarter. The Defense for Pickens came up big early on as they held the Lady Cats scoreless in the opening quarter to give the Nettes an 11-0 lead going to the second.

The Lady Cats got on the board first in the second quarter thanks to a three pointer by Charley Poteet. The Nettes, countered with an 8-0 run that included a three pointer by Bella Hopkins, and a 5-0 self run by Steinhauer to make it 19-3 Pickens. Lucy Ray put an end to the Nettes run with a bucket to make it 19-5. Moore got her second three pointer of the game to make it 22-5. Madison Bradshaw answered with a bucket to make it 22-7. Deering got her second field goal of the game as she hit a three to make it 25-7. Amayah Jones got her first bucket of the game to make it 25-9. After battling foul trouble for most of the first half picking up two quick ones in the first quarter, Mullins split a pair of free throws to make it 26-9. Hopkins connected on her second three pointer to make it 29-9 Nettes at the break.

To begin the second half, Steinhauer went on another personal 5-0 run as she hit a three pointer and a pair of free throws to make it 34-9 Nettes. After a bucket by Jones that ended the run, Mullins went on a 5-0 run of her own as she made two shots and a free throw to make it 39-11. Ray and Steinhauer would then trade buckets as Pickens led, 41-15. Aliza Chastain ended the third quarter with a make for the Lady Cats as Pickens led 41-17 going to the fourth quarter.

Chastain, who ended the third quarter with a bucket, began the fourth quarter with a bucket as well to make it 41-19. Mullins, then got a bucket and the foul. Mullins completed the three point play and made it 44-19. Jones then went on a personal 4-0 run to make it 44-23. Steinhauer ended the run with a three pointer. Sophia Riblet responded with a bucket to make it 47-25. After a bucket by Steinhauer and a free throw by Deering, the Nettes led 50-25. The Lady Cats got on a 4-0 run to close the game. Pickens, picks up the win, 50-29.

With the win, head coach Brandon Thomas picks up win number 200 of his career. Coach Thomas and the Nettes will be back on their home floor on Friday as they host an undefeated Sonoraville Lady Phoenix team. Both clubs will come into the game with similar 6-0 records. Tip off is set for 7 pm.

Nettes sweep season series from Gilmer

Jasper, Ga — After coming off of a big 75-18 win over Southeast Whitfield on the road on Friday, the 14th, the Pickens Dragonettes turned right back around and welcomed the Gilmer Lady Cats to the Dragons Den for a non-region contest on Saturday, January 15th. Coming into the game, the Nettes were riding a 12-game winning streak. The Nettes won the prior two meetings with the Lady Cats this season and were looking to complete the season sweep. The first meeting saw the Nettes come away with a 56-50 win in Blue Ridge. The second meeting saw Pickens again come away with a 55-49 win in Ellijay. The Nettes, outscored the Lady Cats, 37-22 in the second half in route to a 53-38 win.

 

The Nettes got the first quarter going early with a bucket by Carmyn Mullins to make it 2-0 early. After Gilmer tied it up a 2, Pickens went on a 5-0 run after a three by Carmyn Mullins and a bucket by Emma Gleason to give the Nettes a 7-2 lead. A 4-0 run from the Lady Cats cut the lead down to 7-6. The Nettes would go on an 8-0 run to close the quarter as Amanda Nelson and Bella Hopkins both hit three’s, and Caroline Mullins nailed a jumper just as times expired to make it 15-6 Nettes, going to the second.

In the second quarter, after the teams traded a foul each, Caroline Mullins would go 1 for 2 from the line. Her sister, Carmyn, got the rebound and made the bucket to make it 18-6 Pickens. After a 4-0 run by the Lady Cats was stopped by a bucket from Gleason, Gilmer went on another 4-0 run to cut the Nettes lead down to 20-14. Hopkins, answered with a three to make it 23-14. After a bucket by the Lady Cats, Madison Powell got in on the act with a three of her own to make it 26-16 Pickens at the half.

To start the third quarter, Caroline Mullins hit a three pointer to make it 29-16. After a bucket and a free throw by Gilmer, Hopkins hit two free throws of her own to make it 31-19. After the two free throws, the Nettes turned on the defense and Caroline Mullins went on an 8-0 run by herself to make it 39-19. After a bucket by the Lady Cats to stop the run, Nelson hit a free throw to make it 40-21. The two teams then traded three pointers to make it 43-24 Nettes. A bucket by Gilmer to close the third quarter made it 43-26 Pickens going to the fourth.

A pair of free throws by the Lady Cats started the scoring in the fourth quarter. After a bucket from Caroline Mullins, Gilmer went on a 4-0 run to make it 45-32. A bucket by Gleason and a free throw make from Caroline Mullins made it 48-32. The teams traded free throws for a bit, then Gilmer made a bucket to make it 49-36. The Nettes, then got back to back buckets from Caroline Mullins and Powell to make it 53-36. The Lady Cats would make two final free throws before the end of the quarter to make it a 53-38 Pickens win.

The Nettes, will be back at it on Tuesday, January 18th (weather permitting) as they welcome the Cedartown Lady Bulldogs to Jasper for a 7-AAAA match up. Pickens defeated Cedartown earlier in the season, 62-31 at Cedartown. Tip off for this one is set for 6 pm.
