Nettes fall to Wesleyan; will be #4 seed in upcoming region tournament

Jasper, Ga — After a big region win over 3A #5 White County last Friday, the Pickens Dragonettes looked for another one on Tuesday, February 7th as they welcomed the #3 team in 3A, the Wesleyan Lady Wolves. Wesleyan, defeated the Nettes earlier in the season, so the Nettes were looking to split the season series and move up in the region standings. In what was a good game overall, the Lady Wolves pulled away in the end and came away with a 58-46 win.
In the first quarter, the Lady Wolves got the scoring going with a basket by Audrey Ekoue-Bla to make it 2-0. Caroline Mullins, responded with a bucket to tie things up, then Ellison Steinhauer made a pair of free throws to give the Nettes a 4-2 lead. After a layup by Johanna Potter tied things up again, Bella Hopkins gave Pickens the lead back with a basket to make it 6-4 Nettes. Wesleyan, then went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead, 11-6.
A three pointer by Steinhauer cut the lead down to 11-9. Potter, answered with her own three pointer to make it 14-9. Ellie Hollis, cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 2 with a three pointer making it 14-12. After a timeout, the Lady Wolves went on a 5-0 run to stretch the lead out to 19-12. A bucket by Mullins cut the Wesleyan lead down to 19-14 as we headed to the second quarter.
Wesleyan opened the second quarter on a 4-0 run to make it 23-14. A basket by Hopkins ended the run to make it 23-16. Both teams then traded baskets as the Lady Wolves continued to lead, 25-18. Wesleyan, would then go on an 8-0 run to stretch the lead to 33-18. Emma Gleason, ended the run and also ended the first half scoring with a layup to make it 33-20 Lady Wolves going into the half.
Much like both the first and second quarters, Wesleyan opened the scoring in the third quarter with a layup by Potter to make it 35-20. After a bucket by Mullins, Eva Garabadian, made her first two point shot as she made a pair of three point shots in the first half. Mullins, then went on a 4-0 run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 37-26. A basket by Londyn Walker ended the mini Mullins run and made it 39-26 Wesleyan. Stienhauer, again made a pair of free throws to cut it down to 11 once again, 39-28.
Chazadi Wright, made a layup to make it 41-28. The Nettes, then went on a 5-0 run as Hopkins hit a three and then got to the basket for the lay in to make it 41-33. Walker, ended the Hopkins run with a bucket to make it 43-33. A three by Steinhauer cut it to 43-36 with just a few seconds left in the third. That would be enough time for Garabadian to hit her third three of the game just before the horn sounded at the end of the quarter to make it 46-36 Wesleyan going to the fourth.
The Lady Wolves, made it 4-4 starting the quarter scoring as Desiree Davis made a layup to stretch the lead to 48-36. Pickens, then answered with a 5-0 run as Mullins got the shot to go and Steinhauer hit a three to cut the lead to 48-41. Walker, would end the run by making the layup and then completing the and-1 making it 51-41. Mullins, made her first three of the game to cut it down to 7, 51-44. Walker and Steinhauer then traded buckets and it remained a 7 point game, 53-46. After a timeout was called by Wesleyan with under a minute to go in the game, the Nettes had to go into foul mode. The Lady Wolves, were able to hit some free throws at the end of the game to get the 58-46 win.

The Nettes, are locked in as the #4 seed in next week’s 7-AAA region tournament. They will take on the #5 seed Dawson Lady Tigers on Monday, February 13th at 4:30 for a chance to go to the 3A State Tournament. There’s still one more regular season game left before that as Pickens will travel to West Hall to take on the Lady Spartans on Friday, February 10th. Tip off is set for 6 pm.
Nettes earn sweep of Lady Tigers after defensive battle

Jasper, Ga — The Pickens Dragonettes, followed up a tough week with a really good week having beaten West Hall on Senior Night on Tuesday, January 17th, and sweeping the season series against Gilmer in Ellijay on Friday, January 20th. On Thursday, January 26th, the Nettes welcomed the Dawson Lady Tigers to Roy Cowart Court. In a very hard fought game, Pickens came away with a big region win over Dawson, 46-37.
The Nettes got the scoring started in the first quarter with a pair of free throws from Emma Gleason to make it 2-0. After a bit of back and forth from both teams, the Lady Tigers grabbed their first lead of the game with a three pointer by Kindra Coker and a layup by Morgan Chester to make it 5-2. Madison Powell got the first points of the game from the field for Pickens as she tied the game up with a three. Caroline Mullins, then split a pair of free throws to give the Nettes a 6-5 lead.
Dawson, then went on a 4-0 run as Chester and Morgan Burt made back to back layups to make it 9-6 Lady Tigers. Ellison Steinhauer, split a pair of free throws to make it 9-7. Dawson, then went on another run as Kirklyn Porter made a pair of free throws, and the Eva Bishop made back to back shots to make it 15-7. A bucket by Mullins would make it 15-9 Lady Tigers going to the second quarter.
Nettes with the ball in the first quarter
The second quarter, belonged to the Nettes. The quarter started off with a 4-0 run by Ellison Steinhauer to cut the Dawson lead down to 15-13. The Lady Tigers got two points back with a pair of free throws by Anna Ayers to make it 17-13. That would be the only points Dawson would score in the quarter as Pickens held them scoreless from the field during the frame. After the free throws, the Nettes went on a 10-0 run getting back to back layups from Gleason, a free throw make from Steinhauer, a three pointer and layup from Mullins to make it 23-17 Pickens going into the half.
Nettes allowed zero field goals in the second quarter
Chester opened the scoring in the second half as she made a layup to cut the Nettes lead to 23-19. Pickens, responded with a 6-0 run as Mullins, Emory Bryant, and Bella Hopkins each made baskets to extend the Nettes lead out to 29-19. Chester, ended the run with another layup to make it 29-21 Pickens as we’d head to the fourth quarter with the Nettes up by that same score.

To begin the fourth quarter, both teams traded buckets as Bishop scored for Dawson, Bryant scored for the Nettes, than Chester scored for the Lady Tigers making it 31-25 Pickens. As the quarter went on, both teams kept answering each other as they traded baskets. The Nettes, kept the lead at a distance and were able to pull out a 46-37 win over Dawson to get the in season sweep.

Nettes pick up region win on Senior Night

Jasper, Ga — It was a rough week for the Pickens Dragonettes last week as they dropped three straight road games against Sonoraville, White County, and Wesleyan. On Tuesday, January 17th, they were back at home as they welcomed the West Hall Lady Spartans to Roy Cowart Court for a 7-AAA match up. It was also a reason to celebrate because it was also Senior Night. All three seniors had big nights as the Nettes got back on the winning track defeating the Lady Spartans 65-9.
The Nettes got off to a quick start in the first quarter as Senior Madison Powell began the scoring with a layup. Bella Hopkins then hit a three pointer, and Caroline Mullins made a pair of free throws to make it 7-0. Powell, got her second bucket of the quarter to make it 9-0 Nettes. After a bucket by Summer Orlick to put West Hall on the board, Pickens went on a 6-0 run getting baskets from Mullins and Hopkins to make it 15-2 going to the second.
Nettes on offense in the first quarter
The second quarter began with the Nettes continuing their run they ended the first quarter with as Mullins hit a pair of free throws, Hopkins, Emery Bryant, and Senior Adrienne Plumley all made buckets as all together it was a 14-0 run to make it 23-2. After Orlick got a crazy shot to fall, she converted the and-1 attempt to end the run and make it 23-5. Pickens, went on another 6-0 run as Plumley, Hopkins, and Brylee Deering made baskets to make it 29-5. Just before the end of the half, Xitlally Villeda split a pair of free throws to make it 29-6 Nettes going into the break.
Nettes played tough defense all game
To start the second half, Pickens went on a big run. The run started with Plumley who got her 5th and 6th point of the game. Then the Nettes would hit 4 straight three pointers as Emmie Moore, Mullins, and Emery Steinhauer, who hit two back to back. Emery’s sister Ellison, decided she wanted to get in on the act and she made a bucket for her first points of the game to make it 45-6. Cayla Radich, ended the Pickens run with a basket to make it 45-8. Pickens, got two free throws to end the third and it was 47-8 Nettes going to the fourth.

A free throw by Mullins and a bucket by Emory Bryant got the fourth quarter started for Pickens as they went up, 50-8. After Orlick split a pair of free throws to make it 50-9, the rest of the shortened fourth quarter became the Madison Powell and Emma Gleason show. Senior Emma Gleason, got her first points of the game with a layup. Powell followed up with a bucket and a three pointer. Gleason, then scored the last six points of the game as the Nettes got back to their winning ways defeating the West Hall Lady Spartans, 65-9.

Nettes fall in match up between top ten teams

Jasper, Ga — On Friday, December 16th, the Pickens Dragonettes welcomed the Lumpkin County Lady Indians to the Dragons Den for a massive game in the 7-AAA region. On Tuesday, December 13th, the Nettes picked up a big road region win over a good Dawson Lady Tiger team. The Lady Indians, got a win over the Lady Cats of Gilmer on Tuesday. In what was touted as a heavyweight fight, this game lived up to the billing as it came down to the final shot. The Lady Indians, came away with a close 59-56 win.
After winning the opening tip, Lumpkin wasted no time getting on the board first as Mary Mullinax hit a three to make it 3-0. Bella Hopkins, gave the Nettes their first points with a basket to make it 3-2. After a bucket by Kate Jackson made it 5-2, Hopkins tied the game with a three. The Lady Indians answered right back with a three from Averie Jones to make it 8-5. Pickens, went on a 4-0 run with back to back buckets from Ellison Steinhauer and Hopkins to make it 9-8 Nettes.
Mullinax, hit her second three of the quarter to give Lumpkin the lead back, 11-9. In true back and forth fashion, Steinhauer tied the game up with a layup to even it at 11 a piece. Mullinax, then went on a 4-0 self run giving her 10 points in the first quarter to make it 15-11. Emma Gleason cut the lead down to 15-13 with a bucket as we’d head to the second quarter.

Gleason, liked ending the first quarter so much that she decided to begin the second quarter with a layup to tie things at 15. Jones came right back down and gave the Lady Indians the lead back with a three to make it 18-15. The Nettes, went on a 9-0 run as Caroline Mullins scored 4 points. Hopkins with 2 points, and Steinhauer with 3 points to give the Pickens its largest lead of the game, 24-18. After Mullinax split a pair of free throws, she made a layup to make it 24-21 Nettes. Hopkins continued her hot first half with a bucket to make it 26-21. Lumpkin closed on a 4-0 run getting baskets from Jones an Lexi Pierce to give us a halftime score of 26-25 in favor of Pickens.
Nettes on defense against the Lady Indians
The Lady Indians began the third quarter with a bucket by Jones to give Lumpkin the lead back, 27-26. Steinhauer, gave the Nettes the lead right back with a bucket to make it 28-27. The Lady Indians then got back to back three pointers from Jackson and Jones to make it 33-28 Lumpkin. Mullins, ended the run with a layup to make it 33-30. After a basket by Mullinax, Steinhauer and Mullins combined for a 5-0 run and the ball game was tied at 35.
The Lady Indians top scorer on the night up to this point, Mullinax, gave Lumpkin the lead back with a bucker making it 37-35. Hopkins, got her first points of the quarter to tie it back up. Jones, gave the Lady Indians the lead back with a three to make it 40-37. Steinhauer, matched her with a three of her own to tie it at 40. After a Mullinax bucket gave Lumpkin the lead, Steinhauer, ended the third with a bucket to send us to the fourth all tied at 42.

Brylee Deering, began the fourth quarter with a three to give the Nettes a 45-42 lead. Ciera Brooks, tied it back up with her first points of the game. Mullins, retook the lead for Pickens after a bucket. After a couple of fouls on each team, Jones gave Lumpkin the lead with a three to make it 48-47. Mullinax then followed with a basket to make it 50-47. Mullinax then split a pair of free throws to make it 51-47. Brooks, made a bucket to stretch the lead to 53-47. Mullins, split a pair of free throws and cut the lead down to 53-48. Jackson, stretched it up to 7 with a basket to make it 55-48.
Mullins and Jackson, traded buckets and the Lady Indians led it, 57-50. Steinhauer, cut the lead to four with a three to make it 57-53. Mullins, then cut the lead down to two with a basket to make it 57-55. Jones, got a big shot to fall as she stretched the lead to 59-55. After a mistimed foul by Jones, Mullins split a pair of free throws to make it 59-56. Lumpkin, then turned the ball over on the ensuing in bounds play and Pickens got the timeout with 1 second left. The potential game tying shot fell just short and the Lady Indians survived 59-56.

The Nettes, were back in action early on Saturday, December 17th as they took on the Kennesaw Mountain Lady Mustangs at Pope High School as part of the Pope-Alpharetta Holiday Tournament. Pickens, came away with the win, 62-17 to improve their record to 10-1. There next game in the three game tournament, will be on Monday, December 19th. They will face Cambridge at 5:30.
Nettes move to 7-0 with non-region win over Sonoraville

Jasper, Ga — After coming away with a win against their biggest rial on Tuesday to begin 7-AAA play, the Pickens Dragonettes welcomed the Sonoraville Lady Phoenix to the Dragons Den on Friday, December 9th for what was set up as a really good non-region contest. Both teams, came into the game with identical 6-0 records. Pickens, led throughout the game and came away with a hard fought 51-41 win.
The Nettes got the scoring going in the first quarter as Caroline Mullins hit a mid-range jumper to make it 2-0. Sonoraville responded as Diana Smith was able to grab a couple of offensive rebounds and make back to back baskets to give the Lady Phoenix their first lead of the game at 4-2. After a foul by each team, Mullins hit a pair of free throws to tie things up at 4. Bella Hopkins, turned defense into offense as she picked up the steal, then drove down the court for the layup to make it 6-4 Pickens.
Madison Powell added to the lead with a corner three to make it 9-4. The Lady Phoenix, then went on a 9-0 run sparked by Erin Garland, who scored 6 of the 9 points during the run. Hopkins ended the run with a mid-range shot to make it 13-11 Sonoraville. Just before the end of the quarter, Ellison Steinhauer was fouled on a three point attempt. The freshman calmly knocked down all three free throws to give the Nettes a 14-13 lead going to the second.

Steinhauer, began the second quarter with a three pointer to make it 17-13 Pickens. After Ella kate Walraven answered with a three of her own, Steinhauer, drove in the paint a few steps and hit a mid-range bucket to make it 19-16. Hopkins then added to the lead as she split a pair of free throws to make it 20-16. The Lady Phoenix, responded with a 6-0 run getting buckets from Smith, Garland, and Camden Steely to make it 22-20 Sonoraville. The Nettes countered with a 6-0 run of their own as Emma Gleason, Brylee Deering, and Steinhauer combined to give Pickens a 26-22 lead at the break.

Sonoraville got on the board first to start the second half as Brynley Walraven made a bucket to make it a two point game. The Nettes then went on a 5-0 run as Mullins made a shot just inside the free throw line and Streinhauer hit a three to make it 31-24. After a couple of fouls by both teams, Brynley Walraven hit a three to make it 31-27. From then on it was all Pickens as the Nettes went on a 9-0 run to close out the third quarter. Mullins, scored 7 of the 9 points during the run with Gleason making a layup in-between. Going to the fourth, it was 40-27 Nettes.

Garland and Ella kate Walraven got things going for the Lady Phoenix in the fourth with a combined 5-0 run to make it 40-32 Nettes. Mullins and Ella kate Walraven then traded buckets and the score was now 44-34. Taylor West then split a pair of free throws making it 44-35 Pickens. Gleason, went on a 4-0 run by herself to make it 48-35. After Kayleigh Kelley hit a pair of free throws, Hopkins hit a three to make it 51-37. Kelley, would get the final four points of the night for Sonoraville as she again made a pair of free throws and then made a layup. The Nettes, come away with the 51-41 win.

Nettes take down Lady Rebels in early season top 10 matchup

Ellijay, Ga — As the weather starts to cool, it means that we are getting into basketball season. On Saturday, November 19th, the annual Thanksgiving Tournament that features Copper Basin, Fannin, Gilmer, and Pickens, began. This year, it is being played in the newly redesigned gym known as “The Cage” on the campus of Gilmer High School. The first game of the tournament featured a pair of top ten teams going at it as the #6 team in 3A the Pickens Dragonettes, took on the #4 team in 2A, the Fannin Lady Rebels.
For the Nettes, it was their second game on the young season as they defeated Cherokee Bluff 71-25 on November the 12th to open the season. For the Lady Rebels, it was their first “official” game of the 2022-23 season, but they did look impressive in their scrimmage earlier in the week. The Nettes, led throughout this one and came away with the 54-40 win.
In the first quarter, Pickens got on the board quickly as Emma Gleason made the layup after the feed from Caroline Mullins and converted on the and-1 to give the Nettes a quick 3-0 lead. Ava Queen got the Lady Rebels on the board with a layup of her own to make it 3-2. After a steal by Fannin, Reigan O’Neal went 1-2 from the free throw line to tie the game up at 3. The Nettes, would come up with a takeaway of their own and Emmie Moore would find Gleason under the bucket for two to make it 5-3. Madison Powell took the hand off from Gleason and made the layup to make it 7-3 Nettes. Highly touted Lady Rebel Courtney Davis got into the score book with a scoop layup to make it 7-5.
After a block by Bella Hopkins, Freshman Ellison Steinhauer took it down the floor and got fouled on the layup attempt. Steinhauer would go 2-2 from the line to make it 9-5 Nettes. O’Neal, would answer right back with a tough layup in traffic to make it 9-7. Hopkins got in on the scoring with a three to make it 12-7. Moore used a nice pump fake to drive into the lane for the layup. The free throw was good and that made it 15-7 Nettes. After a back and forth first quarter, Pickens led Fannin, 15-7.
Steinhauer got the scoring started in the second quarter with a nice drive to the bucket and gave the Nettes a 17-7 lead. Pickens added to the lead with a Hopkins three. Her second of the first half to make it 20-7. After a steal by Emory Bryant, Steinhauer connected on a three to make it 23-7 Nettes. A nice find by Steinhauer led to a made three by Moore to make it 26-7. Davis, put an end to the 11-0 scoring run by Pickens and gave Fannin its first points of the second quarter with a layup making it 26-9. After grabbing a rebound, Mullins threw a long outlet pass to Steinhauer who connected with her second three of the first half to make it 29-9. Queen came back on the other end and connected on her first three of the first half to make it 29-12. At the break, the Nettes would lead the Lady Rebels by a score of 29-12.
To begin the third quarter, Ellie Cook of the Lady Rebels gave Fannin the first points of the second half as she caught the deflected pass and made a nice reverse layup to make it 29-14. Mullins, got her first two points of the ball game as she answered on the other end with a nice spin and drive to the bucket to make it 31-14. Davis, then raced down the floor and made a layup as the two teams were now trading buckets. After the Nettes kept a possession alive with an offensive rebound by Gleason, Mullins was fouled driving to the basket. She made 1 of 2 to make it 32-16 Pickens.
Davis, using her speed, drove down the floor, went underneath the basket, and found Cook who connected on the three to make it 32-19. Mullins, was able to draw the foul on the next trip down the floor and make both free throws to give the Nettes a 34-19 advantage. Jayden Bailey, was able to grab the rebound and get the bucket. After a miss on the free throw attempt, the Lady Rebels were able to get the rebound and get another tough bucket. This time by Riley Reeves. She completed the and-1 and it was down to a 34-24 Pickens lead.
Steinhauer, setteled things down just a little as she went 2-2 from the line to make it 36-24. Davis, again using her speed, raced down the floor for the layup to once again make it a 10 point game. After a no call on one end, the Nettes were able to drive down the other end a connect on a three by Steinhauer. Her third of the game. O’Neal, was able to drive down the lane and went 2-2 on the free throw line. Mullins answered with a layup to make it 41-28. Reeves, would get fouled on the layup attempt and go 1-2 from the line to make it 41-29 Pickens going to the fourth.
Davis, got the scoring started in the fourth with a layup to make it 41-31. Mullins, then did one of the many things she excels at and that’s driving down the lane and getting contact on shot attempts. Mullins would go to the line and make both shots to make it 43-31. Hopkins then collected the rebound off the Reeves miss and drove it the length of the floor and made the layup to make it 45-31. After a steal by the Nettes, Mullins had a breakaway all alone and made the layup to stretch the lead out to 47-31. Gleason, after getting a steal, passed it ahead to Steinhauer. After missing her first attempt, Steinhauer grabbed her own rebound and got the put back.
On the next Nettes possession, Steinhauer again grabbed an offensive rebound, got the ball out to Gleason, who found an open Mullins in the corner for the three to make it 52-31. O’Neal then came back with a nice three of her own to make it 52-34. Pickens, had a nice play in-bounding the ball as Hopkins found a cutting Bryant for the layup to make it 54-34. Queen, came back on the other end and drove for a layup to make it 54-36. After a rebound by the Lady Rebels, Reeves drove to the basket and got the layup to make it 54-38. A nice pass down inside by O’Neal led to another layup by Queen to make it 54-40. The Nettes, were able to run out the rest of the clock and Pickens came away with a 54-40 win.
Both these teams will be back in action on Monday as the Nettes will take on the Copper Basin Lady Cougars at 3 pm. The Lady Rebels, will take on the hosting Gilmer Lady Cats at 6 pm.
Nettes battle Lady War Eagles in 4A Final Four

Fort Valley, Ga — It was the year 2000. That was the last time the Pickens Dragonettes played in a Final Four game in the state basketball tournament. On Friday, March 4th, the Nettes made the nearly 3 hour trip south to Fort Valley State University to take on the Marist Lady War Eagles in the GHSA 4A Girls State Basketball Tournament. The Lady War Eagles came into the game with one of the better defenses in the state allowing 31.5 points per game. The Nettes defense, hadn’t been too shabby during the season either only allowing 34.9 points per game. This was expected to be a low scoring affair, and that is what it was. In the end, the Lady War Eagles were able to come away with a 38-35 win.
After a bit of a back and forth to start the first quarter, Amanda Nelson got the scoring started with a three pointer to give the Nettes an early 3-0 lead. After Marist made two layups and a free throw, Caroline Mullins went on a personal 4-0 run by making two free throws and a layup to make it 7-5 Pickens. Going blow for blow in this opening quarter, the Lady War Eagles tied it up at 7 with a bucket. Carmyn Mullins gave the Nettes the lead with a three pointer. Going to the second, Pickens led Marist 10-7.

The Lady War Eagles opened the second quarter with a pair of free throws to cut the Nettes lead down to 10-9. Caroline Mullins answered with a three pointer to make it 13-9. After a layup by Marist, Caroline Mullins went on another 4-0 run with back to back buckets to make it 17-11. The Lady War Eagles ended the run with a bucket to cut it to 17-13. Bella Hopkins then split a pair of free throws to make it 18-13. Marist closed the first half with a bucket to make it 18-15 Nettes going to the break.

The third quarter began with Marist getting a layup to cut the lead to 18-17. Caroline Mullins carried over her strong first half into the third as she made a bucket to make it 20-17. After a pair of free throws by the Lady War Eagles, Caroline Mullins made a layup to make it 22-19. Marist, then hit a three pointer to tie things up at 22. It would not be tied for long as Caroline Mullins made a layup to give the Nettes a 24-22 lead going to the fourth quarter.
Nettes on offense in the third quarter
In the fourth quarter, the Lady War Eagles split a pair of free throws to cut the Pickens lead down to 24-23. Emma Gleason made a layup to make it 26-23. Marist, then went on a 7-0 run to take a 30-26 lead. After Carmyn Mullins split a pair of free throws, the Lady War Eagles made a layup to extend their lead to 32-27. Nelson, then hit a pair of free throws to make it 32-29. With just over 3 minutes left in the game, Marist held the ball till there was under a minute left. The Nettes, nearly had several steals while the Lady War Eagles were holding the ball, but with the time running down, they had to start fouling. Marist, made a pair of free throws to make it 34-29.
We then had an odd incident where as Caroline Mullins was going in for a layup, the horn blew. After a lengthy discussion between officials and coaches, 27 seconds were placed on the clock, the layup from Caroline Mullins counted, and went to the free throw line where she hit two free throws to make it 34-33 Lady War Eagles. The Nettes, then went for the steal on the ensuing in-bounds. Marist, got the ball in and Pickens fouled. The Lady War Eagles, again made a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 36-33. Using that never say die mentality that they’ve come to be known for, the Nettes cut the lead down to 36-35 after a tough layup by Nelson. The Nettes quickly fouled and sent Marist to the line. The Lady War Eagles, made both free throws again to make it 38-35. With one final chance, a three point shot would not fall for the Nettes and Marist held on to win, 38-35.

The Nettes finish the 2021-22 season with a 26-4 overall record. The 26 wins are tied for the second most in a season. The 35 points per game the Nettes gave up on defense ranks as the best in the Pickens High School history. The 21-game win streak that the Nettes went on during the season tied for the second longest streak in team history. The Nettes, won their 900th game in program history during the season. The Nettes, won their second straight 7-AAAA regular season championship during the season. Congrats to the Pickens Dragonettes on an incredibly historic season.

Jefferson, Ga — The Pickens Dragonettes, took to the road on Wednesday, March 2nd to take on the Jefferson Lady Dragons in the Elite 8 of the GHSA 4A Girls State Basketball Tournament. It was a minor miracle for the Nettes to even get to this game as they had to battle back from a 14 point 4th quarter deficit on the road against the Daugherty Lady Trojans in the Sweet 16. Jefferson, was the #1 seed out of region 8. The Nettes, showing a willingness to never quit, overcame a 12 point 4th quarter deficit to defeat the Lady Dragons, 51-50.
Jefferson got out to a quick start in the first quarter as they built an early 4-0 lead. Emmie Moore, who came in for the Nettes after Caroline Mullins had to leave the game for a bit after falling on her elbow, got Pickens on the board with a layup to make it 4-2. The Lady Dragons then added a three, to make it 7-2. Moore, a freshman, then went on a personal 5-0 run as she made another layup and hit a three to tie it up at 7. After Jefferson retook the lead with a bucket, Amanda Nelson tied things up at 9 with a layup. She would then give the Nettes the lead after hitting a free throw to make it 10-9. The Lady Dragons would answer back with a bucket to make it 11-10. Caroline Mullins, now back in the game, got her first points of the contest with a layup to make it 12-11 Nettes. Jefferson would go on a 4-0 run to close out the first quarter as the Lady Dragons led it, 15-12.

The Nettes began the second quarter with a 5-0 run as Nelson hit a three, and Caroline Mullins made a bucket to give Pickens a 17-15 lead. After Jefferson split a pair of free throws and then made a layup, Madison Powell responded with a three pointer to give the Nettes a 20-18 lead. The Lady Dragons answered with a three pointer of their own to reclaim the lead, 21-20. After Caroline Mullins split a pair of free throws to tie things up at 21, Jefferson again went on a 4-0 run. This one, closed out the first half as we headed to halftime with the Lady Dragons leading the Nettes, 25-21.

The third quarter began with Jefferson hitting back to back three pointers to make it 31-21. Powell answered with a three of her own to make it 31-24. The two teams then split a pair of free throws to make the score 32-25 in favor of the Lady Dragons. After a layup from Jefferson, Nelson hit another three to make it 34-28. Nelson, then put an end to a 4-0 run by the Lady Dragons with a layup to make it 38-30. After a 5-0 run by Jefferson that included three free throws, another Nettes freshman, Brylee Deering, stepped up and hit a three to make it 43-33. A layup by the Lady Dragons near the end of the quarter gave Jefferson a 45-33 advantage heading to the fourth.

Nelson got the fourth quarter started with a layup to make it 45-35. After a pair of free throws from Jefferson, Carmyn Mullins made a layup in traffic to make it 47-37. Deering, then split a pair of free throws to make it 47-38. Moore, then drove into the lane, made the layup, and got fouled. She would make the free throw to cut the Lady Dragons lead down to 47-41. Jefferson, then made a pair of free throws to stretch their lead out to 49-41. Then, the Nettes went to work. Caroline Mullins drove into the lane for the layup to make it 49-43. Nelson, then lined up and fired another three pointer to make it 49-46. With Caroline Mullins bringing the ball up the court, the Lady Dragons trapped her in a corner, she found Nelson, who then found an open Bella Hopkins who hit a three pointer to tie it up at 49. By this point the Nettes faithful that made the trip, were losing their minds. After a stop defensively, and a timeout, Caroline Mullins got by her defender and drove into the lane for a tough layup to give Pickens a 51-49 lead with 40 seconds left.
Here’s where things get interesting shall we say. Jefferson would miss two potential go ahead short shots. A fight for the ball occurred which resulted in a jump ball. The arrow pointed the way of the Nettes with 23 seconds left. After a timeout was called by Pickens to avoid the 5-second call, the ball was passed in to Caroline Mullins. Mullins, would miss the front end of the 1 and 1. Jefferson got the rebound and drove down the court and was fouled with 13 seconds left. The Lady Dragons split the free throws to make it 51-50 Nettes. On the missed free throw, a tie up with the ball led to the Lady Dragons getting a timeout granted with 12.2 seconds left. After the timeout, Jefferson found an open girl under the basket, but she was called for the travel, giving possession back to Pickens with 4.6 seconds left. a jump ball was called on the ensuing in-bounds play, which gave the Lady Dragons the ball with 2.3 seconds left. Jefferson lobbed it into the paint, but Emma Gleason was able to force a lose ball. The ball went out of bounds as time expired and the Nettes began to celebrate. That celebration was short lived as the officials determined that there was .3 seconds left on the clock when the ball went out on Gleason. Jefferson lobbed it up for a desperation shot at the basket, but it was no good and the Nettes held on to knock off the Lady Dragons, 51-50.
Pickens, will have a quick turnaround as they will face the Marist Lady War Eagles in the Final Four on Friday, March 4th. Marist, advanced to the Final Four on Tuesday with a 36-16 victory over the Nettes region mates, the Heritage Lady Generals. The game will be played at Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, Georgia. Tip off is set for 6 pm.

Jasper, Ga — It was state tournament time once again in Jasper as the Pickens Dragonettes welcomed the Riverdale Lady Raiders to the Dragons Den for the first round of the GHSA 4A Girls State Basketball Tournament. After a tough loss to Northwest Whitfield in the region championship, the Nettes came into the game as the #2 seed. The Riverdale Lady Raiders, came into the game as the #3 seed out of region 5. Using a big time team effort, the Nettes came away with an 83-44 win.
In the first quarter, the Nettes got off to a quick start as Madison Powell opened the scoring with a three pointer. Caroline Mullins then made a bucket and a free throw to make it 6-0 Pickens early. After a three by the Lady Raiders, the Nettes went on an 8-0 run as Caroline Mullins hit a pair of free throws, Emma Gleason made a layup, Caroline Mullins, Emmie Moore, and Amanda Nelson hit free throws to make it 14-3. Riverdale ended the run with a bucket and a free throw to make it 14-6. Then it was time for the Mullins sisters to takeover. After a three by older sister Carmyn, younger sister Caroline made a layup. Carmyn then followed it up with 4 consecutive free throws to make it 23-6 Nettes going to the second.

The Lady Raiders got things going in the second quarter with a bucket to make it 23-8. Moore answered for Pickens with a three pointer making it 26-8. After a bucket by Riverdale, the Nettes went on an 8-0 run as Nelson split a pair of free throws, Carmyn Mullins made a layup and followed that up with a three pointer, then Gleason made a layup to make it 34-10. The two teams then traded buckets to end the first half as Pickens held a 40-15 advantage at the break.

The third quarter began with a steal by the Nettes and a nice finish at the basket by Bella Hopkins to make it 42-15. After a three by the Lady Raiders, Nelson and Caroline Mullins responded with back to back three pointers to make it 48-18. The two teams then traded buckets for a couple minutes as the Nettes led it 54-28. Pickens then went on a 5-0 run getting a layup by Emery Bryant, a free throw make by Carmyn Mullins, and a bucket by Caroline Mullins to make it 59-28. The two teams traded and-1 opportunities as we’d head to the fourth with Pickens leading Riverdale, 62-31.

Riverdale then went on a 4-0 run to make it 67-36. Jazmine Chastain made a layup after a nice offensive rebound and Bryant hit a pair of free throws to stretch the lead out to 71-36. The Lady Raiders came back down and made a layup to make it 71-38. The Nettes came back down the floor and Emery Steinhauer made a wide open three to make it 74-38. Riverdale responded with back to back three pointers to make it 74-44. Pickens ended the game on a 9-0 run as Bryant scored 4 points, Ashaela Buchanan scored 3 points, and Adrienne Plumley scored two points during the run. With the win, the Nettes advance to the Sweet 16. They will have a quick turnaround as they will head down to Albany to take on the Dougherty Lady Trojans on Friday, February 25th. Dougherty, is the #1 seed out of region 1. They had a bye to the Sweet 16 as region 3 did not have a #4 seed for them to match up against in the first round. The Lady Trojans are 17-7 on the season. Their last game was on February 15th in the region 1 championship game against Bainbridge. Tip off for the Nettes and Lady Trojans is set for 6 pm.

Jasper, Ga — On Thursday, February 10th, the Pickens Dragonettes took on the Cedartown Lady Bulldogs in what was not only the final region 7-AAAA game, and the final game of the regular season. This game, was supposed to take place a couple of weeks ago, but weather forced a postponement and it was moved to February 10th. These two teams first met on December 7th with the Nettes coming away with a 62-31 win at Cedartown. Pickens, continued it’s winning ways as they came away with a 73-32 victory in the regular season finale.
In the first quarter, Senior Amanda Nelson got things going for the Nettes as she made a nice move to the basket for the layup. After a steal on the other end, Pickens extended their lead to 4-0 after Sophomore Caroline Mullins found older sister, Senior Carmyn Mullins alone under the basket for the layup. Cedartown would then call an early timeout. Coming out of the timeout, the Lady Bulldogs got on the board with a three pointer to make it 4-3. Caroline Mullins then found Junior Emma Gleason leading the way on a fast break for the layup to make it 6-3. After a miss by Cedartown, Junior Madison Powell collected the rebound, passed it to Caroline Mullins, and she found Gleason again leading the fast break down the floor for another layup to make it 8-3.
After the Lady Bulldogs took another timeout, they were able to connect on an open layup to make it 8-5. Caroline Mullins was able to come away with a steal and took it all the way for the score to make it 10-5. Caroline Mullins then rebounded a missed shot by Cedartown and once again found an open Gleason for the layup to make it 12-5. The Lady Bulldogs then made a free throw line jumper to make it 12-7. Good ball movement by the Nettes led to Nelson finding an open Carmyn Mullins for the layup to make it 14-7. After several tries, Cedartown got a three pointer to go to make it 14-10. Pickens quickly answered as a cutting Freshman Brylee Deering found an open Nelson for the three to make it 17-10. Just as time was expiring in the first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs got a three pointer to fall to make it 17-13.

The Nettes started off the second quarter with a score as Caroline Mullins found Gleason underneath the basket for the layup to make it 19-13. After a turnover by Cedartown, Pickens turned it into points as Nelson got it to Caroline Mullins and she made a nice fad away move for the score to make it 21-13. The Lady Bulldogs were able to break the 4-0 run with a short jumper to make it 21-15. After that, it was all Nettes. Pickens went on a 16-0 run for the remainder of the first half to take a 37-15 lead into the break.

The third quarter started just like the first quarter with Nelson making an open layup to make it 39-15. Carmyn Mullins then was able to drive to the basket, make the layup, and get the foul. She completed the and-1 chance to make it 42-15. After a steal by Powell, she found an open Carmyn Mullins under the basket as the Nettes lead grew to 44-15. Caroline Mullins got a steal of her own and made the layup to make it 46-15. Another steal by Caroline Mullins led to a 2 on 1 fast break and Mullins dished it to Nelson with a nice behind the back pass for the layup to make it 48-15. Cedartown was able to get on the board with a pair of free throws to make it 48-17.
On the next possession for Pickens, Sophomore Bella Hopkins found Nelson open in the corner for the three to make it 51-17. After a steal by Freshman Emmie Moore, Hopkins found a streaking Powell for the layup to make it 53-17. The Lady Bulldogs would then make another pair of free throws to make it 53-19. There was a Freshman to Freshman connection as Deering found Moore, who drove to the basket and hit a floater to make it 55-19. Cedartown answered with a nice turnaround move for the layup to make it 55-21. Another steal by Moore led to a bucket on the other end as Caroline Mullins laid it in to make it 57-21. The scoring in the third continued for the Nettes as Sophomore Emery Bryant found Moore for the layup to make it 59-21. After a steal by Powell, she found Deering, who found an open Moore for the three to make it 62-21 going to the fourth.

The shortened fourth quarter saw Pickens get the first points as Deering found Powell for the three to make it 65-21. Cedartown got their first points of the fourth after a drive to the basket resulted in a layup to make it 65-23. The Lady Bulldogs followed that up with a pair of free throws to make it 65-25. Cedartown again got a layup as they were able to grab a tipped pass to make it 65-27. The Nettes were able to end the Lady Bulldog run after Junior Adrienne Plumley found Bryant for the layup and the foul. Cedartown came back on the other end to hit a three pointer to make it 67-30. After an offensive rebound by Bryant, good ball movement led to Plumley finding Bryant again for the layup to make it 69-30. The Lady Bulldogs were able to hit another pair of free throws to make it 69-32. After a steal, Sophomore Emery Steinhauer took it all the way for the score to make it 71-32. After another steal by the Nettes, Steinhauer found a wide open Plumley under the basket for the layup with just seconds left in the game as Pickens took this one, 73-32.

With the win, Nettes head coach Brandon Thomas collected his 101st win since taking over. That moves him to 2nd all time in Nettes coaching wins. Only behind the man that the court is named after at Pickens High School, Roy Cowart. The 2021-22 season is Coach Thomas’ 5th as Nettes head coach. The Nettes, will await their next opponent as they prepare for their 7-AAAA Region Tournament Semifinal opponent on Thursday. While the opponent is to be determined, the game, and all of the tournament games will be at Northwest Whitfield.
Nettes roll against Southeast Whitfield on Senior Night

Jasper, Ga — A big crowd was on hand as the Pickens Dragonettes 20-2 (10-0), welcomed the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders 1-21 (1-10) to the Dragons Den for Senior Night. The Nettes, came in riding an 18 game winning streak after defeating the 10th ranked team in Single-A Private, the Darlington Lady Tigers on Saturday. The Lady Raiders also had reason to be excited as they picked up their first win of the season against Ridgeland last week. Using a fantastic defensive effort, the Nettes came away with a 59-7 win.
Senior Carmyn Mullins got the scoring started for the Nettes in the first quarter as they took a quick 2-0 lead. Younger sister of Carmyn, Sophomore Caroline Mullins, followed that up with a steal for an easy layup to make it 4-0. After a nice set up from fellow Senior Amanda Nelson, Carmyn Mullins made another shot to make it 6-0. Junior Madison Powell nailed the first three pointer of the game to make it 9-0. Freshman Emmie Moore made an impact early on as she hit a three pointer to make it 12-0. Caroline Mullins got in on the three pointer party as she hit one to make it 15-0 Nettes going to the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Pickens continued it’s great play on both sides of the court. To begin the scoring in the second quarter, Sophomore Bella Hopkins hit a three pointer to make it 18-0. Hopkins then nailed a floater after a nice dish from Caroline Mullins to make it 20-0. Senior Amanda Nelson then got her first points of the night as she hit a three pointer to make it 23-0. Hopkins, continued her stellar second quarter with another three pointer to make it 26-0. Carmyn Mullins then had a nice put back score after fighting for a rebound to make it 28-0. Another Freshman, Brylee Deering, got her first points of the game after a nice pump fake led to a nice make on a jump shot to make it 30-0. Junior Emma Gleason got her first points of the game late in the first half as Caroline Mullins found her wide open underneath the basket for a layup to make it 32-0. Just before the end of the first half, Junior Jazmine Chastain got a steal and took it all the way down the floor for the layup. Going into the break, the Nettes led the Lady Raiders, 34-0.

The second half, was a shortened half as both the third and fourth quarters were both 6 minute quarters instead of the usual 8 minute quarters. In the third quarter, the Nettes continued their scoring ways as the Senior to Senior connection was in play as Carmyn Mullins dished it to a cutting Nelson for the layup to make it 36-0. The Lady Raiders, got their first points of the game on a three pointer to make it 36-3. After a rebound by Hopkins, she found a sprinting Gleason down the floor who then laid it up an in to make 38-3. After getting fouled, Carmyn Mullins went 2-2 from the free throw line to make it 40-3. A nice in-bounds play set up a Moore jumper after a good pass from Nelson to make it 42-3. Good ball movement from the Nettes, and a pass from Moore, led to a three pointer from Gleason to make it 45-3. A scramble for a loose ball on the next Lady Raider possession led to Southeast Whitfield getting an open layup to make it 45-5. On the next possession for Pickens, Moore had a nice drive and kick as she found an open Deering for the three to make it 48-5. A final shot before the buzzer would not fall for the Nettes as we’d head to the fourth with Pickens ahead, 48-5.

To start the fourth, Carmyn Mullins got fouled and hit both shots to make it 50-5. A little later on in the fourth, Hopkins found Nelson for a layup to make it 52-5. After the two teams traded possessions for a bit, the Lady Raiders got a jump shot to go to make it 52-7. After a steal by the Nettes, Carmyn Mullins found Nelson for the layup to make it 54-7. After grabbing the offensive rebound, and using good ball movement, Sophomore Emery Steinhauer found Deering who hit a bank shot three pointer to make it 57-7. A steal by Deering on the Lady Raiders next possession led to an open layup for Steinhauer as she made it 59-7. The final seconds would then tick away as the Nettes came away with their 19th straight win by defeating the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders, 59-7.

Nettes defeat Darlington for 18th consecutive win

Jasper, Ga — On Saturday, February 5th, the Pickens Dragonettes put their 17 game win streak on the line as they welcomed the Darlington Lady Tigers to the Dragons Den for a late season non-region game. Coming into the game, the Nettes were 19-2, (10-0), and coming off a big 39-31 road win over Northwest Whitfield. The Lady Tigers, came in at 18-4 overall (5-2), and winners of three straight. After trailing in the first half, the Nettes used a big second half run to pick up a 50-44 win.
Darlington got things going early on as they made a bucket, then stole the ensuing in-bounds pass and made another basket to make it 4-0. Caroline Mullins got Pickens on the board with a three pointer to make it 4-3. After a bucket by the Lady Tigers, Amanda Nelson and Carmyn Mullins hit back to back three pointers to give the Nettes a 9-6 lead. Darlinton countered with a 7-0 run to retake the lead, 13-9. Carmyn Mullins split a pair of free throws and the Lady Tigers hit a pair of free throws to make it 15-10. Carmyn Mullins and Emma Gleason then went on a 4-0 run to make it 15-14 Darlington. The Lady Tigers then split a pair of free throws to give them a 16-14 lead going to the second.

Nelson, began the second half by tying the game at 25 after hitting a three pointer. Darlington regained the lead after a 4-0 run to go ahead, 29-25. Caroline Mullins made a bucket to cut it to 29-27. After a bucket by the Lady Tigers, the Mullins sisters went on a 5-0 run as Caroline hit a three pointer, and older sister Carmyn made a layup to give Pickens a 32-31 lead. After Darlington made a basket to retake the lead, Gleason gave the Nettes the lead back with a late bucket. Going to the fourth, the Nettes led the Lady Tigers, 34-33.

Darlington opened up the fourth quarter with a three pointer to give the Lady Tigers a 36-34 lead. Caroline Mullins gave the Nettes the lead back with a 4-0 run, making it 38-36. After the Lady Tigers made a bucket and a free throw, Pickens went on a big 7-0 run as Powell hit a layup and a three pointer and Caroline Mullins added a pair of free throws to make it 45-39. Darlington then cut the lead down to 45-41. Caroline Mullins and Nelson went 2-4 on free throw attempts to make it 47-41. A three pointer by the Lady Tigers cut the Pickens lead down to 47-44. Nelson closed the game out going 3-4 from the free throw line to give the Nettes a 50-44 win.

Jasper, Ga — It was a big game feel inside the Dragons Den on Tuesday, January 25th as the top two teams in 7-AAAA were set for a rematch in Jasper. Coming into the game, the Pickens Dragonettes held a record of 16-2 (7-0) and riding a 14 game win streak. The Heritage Lady Generals, came into the game with a record of 14-4 (7-1) and a 10 game win streak of their own. Both teams came in ranked in the top ten of the 4A poll in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution with the Nettes at #5 and the Lady Generals at #8. The previous match up between these two teams in December saw the Nettes come away with a 31-23 win in a defensive contest. Thr Nettes, used a hot shooting second period and tough defense to help earn a 46-35 win.
The first quarter was very much back and forth between these two teams as was expected. The Nettes, jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but the Lady Generals quickly answered and took the lead, 6-5. Two three pointers by Bella Howell and Madison Powell gave Pickens an 11-6 lead over Heritage going to the second.

In the second quarter, the Nettes were lighting it up from beyond the arc. Caroline Mullins got it going with two three pointers in a row. After a bucket by the Lady Raiders made it 17-8, Pickens got three straight three pointers as Amanda Nelson connected for two three’s, and Powell hit her second three pointer of the game to give the Nettes a 26-8 lead over the Lady Generals going to the half.

In the third quarter, Caroline Mullins got things going with a bucket to make it 28-8. After a pair of free throws from the Lady Generals made it 28-10, Carmyn Mullins got a point back after going 1 for 2 from the line. Heritage got their first field goal of the quarter, then Hopkins answered with a three pointer to make in 32-12 Nettes. Later on in the quarter, after a bucket by Heritage, Amanda Nelson hit another three pointer, and Emma Gleason went 1-2 from the line to make it 36-14. The Lady Generals closed the third quarter on a 6-0 run to make it 36-20 going to the fourth.

The fourth quarter saw Caroline Mullins score 7 of her 17 points on the night. While Heritage outscored Pickens in the quarter, 15-10, the Nettes came away with the 46-35 win to earn an in season sweep of the Lady Generals. The win now gives the Nettes a 2 game lead in the loss column in the region for the top spot as we inch closer to region tournament time.

Jasper, Ga — After coming off of a big 75-18 win over Southeast Whitfield on the road on Friday, the 14th, the Pickens Dragonettes turned right back around and welcomed the Gilmer Lady Cats to the Dragons Den for a non-region contest on Saturday, January 15th. Coming into the game, the Nettes were riding a 12-game winning streak. The Nettes won the prior two meetings with the Lady Cats this season and were looking to complete the season sweep. The first meeting saw the Nettes come away with a 56-50 win in Blue Ridge. The second meeting saw Pickens again come away with a 55-49 win in Ellijay. The Nettes, outscored the Lady Cats, 37-22 in the second half in route to a 53-38 win.
The Nettes got the first quarter going early with a bucket by Carmyn Mullins to make it 2-0 early. After Gilmer tied it up a 2, Pickens went on a 5-0 run after a three by Carmyn Mullins and a bucket by Emma Gleason to give the Nettes a 7-2 lead. A 4-0 run from the Lady Cats cut the lead down to 7-6. The Nettes would go on an 8-0 run to close the quarter as Amanda Nelson and Bella Hopkins both hit three’s, and Caroline Mullins nailed a jumper just as times expired to make it 15-6 Nettes, going to the second.

In the second quarter, after the teams traded a foul each, Caroline Mullins would go 1 for 2 from the line. Her sister, Carmyn, got the rebound and made the bucket to make it 18-6 Pickens. After a 4-0 run by the Lady Cats was stopped by a bucket from Gleason, Gilmer went on another 4-0 run to cut the Nettes lead down to 20-14. Hopkins, answered with a three to make it 23-14. After a bucket by the Lady Cats, Madison Powell got in on the act with a three of her own to make it 26-16 Pickens at the half.

To start the third quarter, Caroline Mullins hit a three pointer to make it 29-16. After a bucket and a free throw by Gilmer, Hopkins hit two free throws of her own to make it 31-19. After the two free throws, the Nettes turned on the defense and Caroline Mullins went on an 8-0 run by herself to make it 39-19. After a bucket by the Lady Cats to stop the run, Nelson hit a free throw to make it 40-21. The two teams then traded three pointers to make it 43-24 Nettes. A bucket by Gilmer to close the third quarter made it 43-26 Pickens going to the fourth.

A pair of free throws by the Lady Cats started the scoring in the fourth quarter. After a bucket from Caroline Mullins, Gilmer went on a 4-0 run to make it 45-32. A bucket by Gleason and a free throw make from Caroline Mullins made it 48-32. The teams traded free throws for a bit, then Gilmer made a bucket to make it 49-36. The Nettes, then got back to back buckets from Caroline Mullins and Powell to make it 53-36. The Lady Cats would make two final free throws before the end of the quarter to make it a 53-38 Pickens win.

Jasper, Ga — It was a bitterly cold night in Jasper on Friday, January 7th as the Pickens Dragonettes welcomed the Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins to the Dragons Den for a battle of the two undefeated teams in region play. Coming into the game, the Nettes were riding a 10 game win streak and brought in a record of 12-2 (4-0) while the Lady Bruins came in with a record of 8-5 (4-0). The Nettes, swept the Lady Bruins last season on their way to a 7-AAAA title and knew that Northwest Whitfield had revenge on their minds. In a back and forth game that saw multiple ties and lead changes, the Nettes came away with a hard fought 43-41 win.
In the first quarter, the Nettes got off to a 5-0 start. After a 5-0 run by the Lady Bruins to tie things up, Emma Gleason made a bucket to give the Nettes a 7-5 lead. After a pair of free throws by Northwest Whitfield to tie it back up, Amanda Nelson made a bucket to give Pickens the two point lead. Before the end of the quarter, the Lady Bruins were able to tie it back up and send this one to the second quarter all knotted up at 9.

In the second quarter, the Nettes retook the lead after a Caroline Mullins bucket to make it 11-9. The Lady Bruins, responded with a 5-0 run to make it 14-11 and to take the lead for the first time. Bella Hopkins then tied it back up with a three pointer. Carmyn Mullins followed that up with a bucket to make it 16-14 Pickens. A run by Northwest Whitfield had them out front, 24-19 with little time left in the first half. Nelson, cut the Lady Bruins lead down to 24-22 just before the half ended to send us to the break.

The Nettes, started off the second half much like they did the first half by coming out on a 5-0 run to retake the lead once again, 27-24. An 8-0 run by the Lady Bruins helped them reclaim the lead 32-27. After a pair of free throws from Nelson, Emmie Moore hit a three pointer to tie things up at 32. Bella Hopkins then gave Pickens the lead with a pair of free throws. A bucket by Northwest Whitfield tied things up at 34 as we headed to the fourth quarter.

The Lady Bruins started the fourth quarter off with a three pointer to retake the lead, 37-34. Nelson, would then go to the free throw line on a couple of occasions as she was able to tie things up at 37. Hopkins then went 1-2 from the line to give the Nettes a one point lead, and Nelson made a bucket to put Pickens up, 40-37. Northwest Whitfield would respond with a 4-0 run to take a 41-40 lead. Needing a score, Caroline Mullins delivered for the Nettes as she made the bucket, then made the free throw to give the Nettes a 43-41 lead. The Lady Bruins, had a couple of chances in the final seconds but the defense for the Nettes held strong and Pickens came away with a 43-41 victory.

Jasper, Ga — On a foggy, somewhat rainy Friday evening, the Pickens Dragonettes welcomed the Lady Lions of Central-Carroll to the Dragons Den for a 7-AAAA region tilt. Coming into this 0ne, the Nettes were 4-2 overall and 1-0 in region play while the Lady Lions were 2-4 overall and 0-1 in region play. Prior to the game starting, PHS recognized legendary Nettes basketball coach Roy Cowart as they dedicated the name of the court at PHS in his honor. Coach Cowart spoke to the crowd thanking everyone and showing his support to this year’s team.

Now on to the game. In the first quarter, the Nettes jumped out to an early lead thanks to a strong defensive effort. Going to the second quarter, Pickens held a 17-8 lead over Central-Carroll.

In the second quarter, both teams had their troubles finding consistent scoring as only 15 points were scored between the two schools. The Nettes, outscored the Lady Lions 10-5 in the quarter to take a 27-13 lead into the break.

In the third quarter, Central-Carroll looked to get back into the game. The Lady Lions, outscored Pickens 15-10 in the third to cut the Nettes lead down to 37-28 going to the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, the Nettes responded with a 15-8 run in the frame to close things out and pick up the win, 52-36 over a game Central-Carroll team.
