‘Nettes Winning Streak Ended By Lady Cats, Host Union On Tuesday

PHS Basketball, Team FYN Sports

Last night, we had round three as the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team welcomed their rival, the Gilmer Lady Cats, to the Dragons Den for their 3rd meeting overall, & their 2nd region match up. Pickens, came into the game winners of 6 straight, & winners of the first two meetings with Gilmer earlier in the season.

In the first, it was a closely contested opening frame as was to be expected in a rivalry game such as this one. Both teams found offense early, but it was the ‘Nettes getting the upperhand going to the 2nd leading 17-13. The 2nd quarter, saw more of the same action as the first with the defense coming into play. The Lady Cats, outscored Pickens in the 2nd 10-9, to cut the ‘Nettes lead to 26-23, going into the break.

In the 3rd, the defense for Gilmer held the ‘Nettes offense in check, while the Lady Cat offense scored just enough in the quarter to take the lead from Pickens. Using a 13-6 run in the 3rd, Gilmer went into the 4th leading the ‘Nettes, 36-32. In the 4th, after going back and forth for most of the quarter, Gilmer, was able to hold on after some late free throws. The Lady Cats took this one, 46-40.

Leading the way for the ‘Nettes were:

Torie Williams: 11 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, & 2 steals

Mackenzie Hampton: 9 points, 1 assist, 13 rebounds, 3 steals, & 2 blocks

Shelby Cook: 7 points, 2 assists, 4 rebounds, & 2 steals

Allie Stephens: 7 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, & 1 steal

Mykenzie Weaver: 6 points, 1 assist, & 5 rebounds

For Pickens, they still find themselves in 2nd in the region even after the loss at 6-2. The ‘Nettes, will be back in action on Tuesday as they will be home once again welcoming the Union County Lady Panthers for non-region action. Tip off is scheduled for 6 pm.
