Late Free Throws From Williams Lifts Nettes’ Past Christian Heritage

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Christian Heritage Lady Lions in the final home game of 2018. The Lady Lions, are out of the A-Private classification. After coming away with a big road win on Tuesday, the Nettes’ were looking to continue the momentum as they wrapped up the 2018 portion of their home schedule.

 

The Nettes’, started off the game hot jumping out to a good lead. By the end of the quarter, the Lady Lions got back into it, as Pickens held the lead, 13-8. In the 2nd quarter, the scoring was nearly identical to the first. Pickens, outscored Christian Heritage 13-9, to take a 26-17 lead into the break.

 

The 3rd quarter saw the Lady Lions claw their way back into the game. Christian Heritage, started off the half with a run before the Nettes’ settled it down. The Lady Lions would outscored Pickens 14-10 in the quarter, but the Nettes’ still held onto the lead going to the 4th, 36-31. In the 4th, the Lady Lions again made a big run as they would cut the Nettes’ lead down to one on several occasions. Late in the game, PHS Senior Torie Williams stepped to the free throw line, & would hit 3 free throws, the last two coming with 2 seconds left, to help seal a Nettes’ win over a very game Christian Heritage team, 51-48.

Nettes’ Fight Till The End Against Lady Bruins, Face Gilmer Tomorrow

Earlier tonight, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled back to Southeast Whitfield for a semifinal showdown with the #1 seed coming into the 6-AAAA Region Tournament, the Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins. The winner, would move on to take on the Heritage Lady Generals in the championship game.

In the 1st quarter, the Nettes got off to a 4-0 start. The Lady Bruins, were able to take the lead by the end of the 1st, 17-10. In the 2nd quarter, Pickens got going a little bit, & cut into the Northwest Whitfield lead. At the half, the Lady Bruins led, 27-22.

In the 3rd, the Nettes’ got right back into the game using an 11-6 quarter run. Going to the 4th & final quarter, we we’re all tied at 33. The 4th quarter, was back & forth with the Nettes coming back after trailing 39-33, to take the lead. Northwest Whitfield, was able to make a late run, outscoring Pickens 13-9, to get the win, 46-42.

This week’s #TeamFYNSports Players of the Week are Torie Williams & Brady Moore. PHS, had an out of region game & a region game this week as they hosted Cedartown, & traveled to LaFayette:

 

Torie Williams, had a big hand in the Nettes’ going 2-0 for the week as she finished with 9 points, 7 assists, 2 rebounds, & a steal against Cedartown, & 17 points, 9 assists, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, & 1 block against LaFayette.

 

Brady Moore, did a lot of dirty work in these two games against Cedartown & LaFayette. Against the Bulldogs he had an assist, 3 rebounds, & a steal, & against the Ramblers he finished with 4 points & 2 rebounds.

This week’s #TeamFYNSports Sports Writer Player of the Week is a pair of PHS Seniors. Torie Williams, & Seth Bishop. At the end of every week we will select one Nettes player & one Dragons player as our players of the week. This week, Torie & Seth claim the honors.

 

Torie Williams, played very well against tough competition this week as Pickens went up against Dawson & Forsyth Central in non-region action. Williams, finished with 12 points, 3 assists, 4 rebounds, & 2 steals against Dawson, while collecting 14 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, & 3 steals against Forsyth Central. Williams, is committed to continue her basketball career at Reinhardt University.

 

For Seth Bishop, it was a special week. Not only did he have good games against solid opponents, he surpassed the 1,000 career point mark against Forsyth Central. Against Dawson, Bishop had 26 points, 3 assists, & 10 rebounds. He followed that up with a 23 point, 2 assist, 8 rebound performance against Forsyth Central.

 

It’ll be a busy week this week for the Nettes & the Dragons as they will play a pair of region games, & the Dragons will play another non-region game. Tomorrow, Heritage comes to town with tip-off is scheduled for 6 & 7:30. Friday, Pickens will head to Rossville, to take on Ridgeland at 6 & 7:30 as well. On Saturday, the Dragons will host Forsyth Central at 2:30.

 

 

Nettes’ Host Lady Tigers To Begin 2019

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team welcomed the Dawson Lady Tigers to begin the 2019 portion of their schedule. After closing 2018 out going 2-1 in the Carolina Invitational, Pickens, looked to even the season series with the Lady Tigers, & get a big win at home.

 

The Lady Tigers, got off to a quick start, but the Nettes’ closed the gap to end the 1st. Dawson held the lead, 14-9. In the 2nd quarter, Pickens & Dawson both scored 9 points in the frame as the Lady Tigers continued to lead going to the break, 23-18.

 

In the 3rd, the Lady Tigers were able to extend their lead by using a 12-5 quarter run. Going to the 4th, Dawson led Pickens, 35-23. In the 4th, the Lady Tigers closed things out & picked up the win, 51-27.

The Nettes’, will again be in out of region competition tomorrow as they head to Forsyth County to take on Forsyth Central. These two teams met in the first game of the season, with the Lady Bulldogs coming out on top. This will be an early afternoon game as the tip off is scheduled for 2:30 pm.

Nettes’ Hang Tough With Dawson, Prepare For Holiday Tournament Next Week

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team maybe the short trip to Dawsonville to take on the Dawson Lady Tigers in non-region action. Pickens, came into the game having won two straight, & looking to pull off a big road win. Dawson, came into the game 7-3, & ranked in the top 10 in the 3A classification.

 

In the 1st quarter, both teams took turns holding the lead. As we went to the 2nd, the Lady Tigers took a 15-11 lead. In the 2nd quarter, the game remained extremely close as both teams were finding success scoring. The Nettes’, outscored Dawson slightly, 15-14, to cut the Lady Tiger lead to 29-26, going to the break.

 

In the 3rd, the game still remained close, despite Dawson stretching their lead out just a bit. Having outscored Pickens 20-14 in the frame, the Lady Tigers took a 49-40 lead, going to the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, Dawson used a 15-9 run to hold off a great effort by the Nettes’ to take this one, 64-49.

The Nettes’, will be taking part in a holiday tournament called the Carolina Invitational starting on Thursday in Charleston, South Carolina. Their first game will be against the Wando Lady Warriors. Wando, is out of the 5A classification in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. They are 3-5 on the season. Tip off is set for 5 pm at First Baptist High School in Charleston, South Carolina.

Nettes’ Ground Lady Eagles, Face Gilmer In Tournament Championship Tonight

Yesterday afternoon, the PHS Nettes’ varsity basketball team traveled back to Ellijay for the 2nd day of the annual Thanksgiving Tip-Off Tournament. Pickens, once again opened the day as they took on the Hiwassee Dam Lady Eagles from North Carolina.

 

In the opening quarter, once Pickens found it’s footing, they were able to build a lead on the Lady Eagles. Going to the 2nd quarter, the Nettes’ led, 14-7. In the 2nd, the Nettes’ extended their lead using a combination of good defense leading to offense. Outscoring Hiwassee Dam 17-9 in the 2nd, Pickens took a 31-16 lead into the half.

 

In the 3rd, the Nettes’ continued to build their lead on the Lady Eagles. Outscoring Hiwassee Dam, 16-13, Pickens held a 47-29 advantage going to the 4th. The Nettes’ took this one, 60-36.

Nettes’ Open Tip-Off Tournament With Win Over Fannin

Yes ladies & gentlemen it’s that time once again as high school basketball has started in the state of Georgia. With that, comes the annual Thanksgiving Tip-Off Tournament being held this year in Ellijay at Gilmer High School. The tournament, features Pickens, Gilmer, Fannin, & Hiwassee Dam. Kicking off the tournament this year, would be the Nettes’ & the Lady Rebels of Fannin.

 

It was a back & forth frame to start the opening quarter as you got the feeling this one might be closely contested the entire way through. Pickens, was able to grab an 8-6 lead after one. The action, & the offense picked up for both teams in the 2nd quarter as the Nettes’ scored 20 points, while the Lady Rebels scored 19. Pickens, continued to lead Fannin as we hit the half, 28-25.

 

In the 3rd quarter, Fannin, off the strength of good defensive effort, held the Nettes’ to just 5 points, while scoring 13, to take the lead going to the 4th, 38-33. In the 4th, the defense for Pickens stepped up and the offense fed off of that to close things out. The Nettes’, closed the 4th with a 17-8 run to get a 50-46 win.

 

The Nettes’ will be back on the court tomorrow afternoon as they will take on the Hiwassee Dam Lady Eagles at 3 pm. Reminder, the game will be played in Ellijay at Gilmer High School.

Nettes’ Fall To Region Leading Lady Bruins, Face Christian Heritage This Afternoon

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the trip up to the Varnell/Tunnel Hill area to take on the Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins. Coming into the game, the Lady Bruins were leading the region, while the Nettes’ were slotted into the 4th spot, but came in looking to bounce back after a tough loss in Ellijay on Tuesday.

 

The home team got off to a quick start in the opening quarter as the Nettes’ just couldn’t get anything to go into the basket. After one, the Lady Bruins led Pickens, 14-3. In the 2nd quarter, the Nettes’ offense found a little more consistency, but Northwest Whitfield maintained their lead going into the half, 30-12.

 

The 3rd quarter, turned out to be a special quarter for Nettes’ Senior Torie Williams as she surpassed the 1,000 career point mark in the frame. Willams, joins Seth Bishop of the Dragons, & her teammate Mykenzie Weaver as the third active player to enter the 1,000 career point club. The 3rd quarter was also the best quarter from an offensive standpoint as they put up 16 points to the Lady Bruins 20. Going to the 4th, Northwest Whitfield held a 50-28 lead. The Lady Bruins, took this one by a score of 65-34.

Nettes’ Fall To Lady Cats In Closing Seconds, Host Northwest Whitfield Friday

Earlier tonight, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team welcomed the Gilmer Lady Cats to the Dragons Den for their 2nd overall meeting of the season, and the 1st region meeting of the season. The Nettes’, came into the game winners of 3 straight, & 2-1 in region play. The Lady Cats, came in an impressive 8-1 on the early season & also 2-1 in 6-AAAA.

 

In the 1st, the Nettes’, came out hot on a cold evening. Junior Mykenzie Weaver, scored the 1st 7 points for Pickens, & the Nettes held a 10 point advantage at one point. After one, Pickens led the Lady Cats, 16-8. In the 2nd quarter, the defense for Gilmer got them into it. The Lady Cats, went on an 18-9 quarter run, to take a 26-25 lead over Pickens, going to the break.

 

In the 3rd, both teams remained close as you would expect in a heated rivalry game. Gilmer, outscored the Nettes’ 15-14 in the 3rd, to take a 41-39 lead into the 4th and final quarter. Coming down to the wire in the 4th, the Nettes’ & the Lady Cats were tied at 58. Gilmer, would make 1 of 2 free throws to take a 59-58 lead. With 1.8 seconds left, the Nettes’ got a good look off of the in-bounds play, but the shot would not fall & the Lady Cats came away with the 59-58 win.

Nettes’ Win Third Straight, Host Gilmer On Tuesday

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the trip up to Walker County to take on the LaFayette Lady Ramblers in a 6-AAAA region match up. Pickens, came in winners of two straight, & looking to improve to 2-1 in the region.

 

In the 1st quarter, it was the home team that took control early. After one, the Lady Ramblers led Pickens, 13-10. In the 2nd, the offense & defense for the Nettes’ picked  up. Pickens, outscored LaFayette 15-13 in the frame to cut the Lady Rambler lead to 26-25 at the half. In the 2nd quarter, Junior Mykenzie Weaver reached the 1,000 point mark for her career.

In the 3rd, the Nettes’ would grab the lead from LaFayette. Outscoring the Lady Ramblers 18-16, Pickens held a 43-42 lead going to the 4th. The 4th saw the Nettes’ pull away. Pickens, outscored LaFayette 22-12 in the final frame to get the win, 65-54.

Nettes’ Suffer Tough Defeat In Region Opener

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team, traveled up to Ringgold to take on the Lady Generals of Heritage in the opening game of 6-AAAA region play. Pickens, was coming off of a 2nd place finish last week in the annual Thanksgiving Tournament & had confidence coming into this game with Heritage after sweep the regular season series, & besting them in the region tournament semifinals last season.

 

In the first quarter, the Nettes’ jumped out to a quick start in a big time early road game. After one quarter of play, Pickens found themselves ahead of the Lady Generals, 19-12. For the bulk of the 2nd quarter, both teams traded bucket for bucket. The Nettes’, outscored Heritage 10-8, giving them a 29-20 lead, going into the break.

 

In the 3rd, the tide began to turn ever so slightly. By outscoring Pickens in the 3rd, 13-8, the Lady Generals cut into the Nettes’ lead as we headed to the 4th, 37-33. In the 4th, Heritage would go on a big run before the Nettes’ got their first bucket of the frame. The Lady Generals, used a 24-12 quarter advantage to take this one, 57-49.

Nettes’ Finish Fourth In Region, Face Flowery Branch In State Tournament

This past Friday afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team was once again in Dalton to take part in the consolation game of the 6-AAAA Region Tournament. Their opponent, the Gilmer Lady Cats. This would be the 4th meeting between the two this season. The winner, would be the regions 3rd seed in the state tournament. The other, will represent the region as it’s 4th seed.

The Lady Cats, jumped out to a quick start over the Nettes in the opening quarter of this one. Going to the 2nd, Gilmer held a 21-8 lead over Pickens. The 2nd quarter scoring was very close as the Lady Cats just did outscore the Nettes 8-7. Going into the break, Gilmer maintained their lead over Pickens, 29-15.

In the 3rd, the Nettes’ began to bounce back. The 3rd quarter saw the Nettes’ outscore the Lady Cats 18-11, to cut the Gilmer lead down to 40-33, going to the 4th. The 4th quarter, saw the Lady Cats hold on to secure the win, 52-43.

Nettes’ Come Away With Big Road Region Win Over Southeast Whitfield

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team, traveled up to Dalton to take on the Lady Raiders of Southeast Whitfield. This game, would be the final region game of the 2018 portion of the schedule as the rest of 2018 for the Nettes’ will be filled with non-region games.

 

The first quarter, started out slow for both teams. As both squads looked to get things going, the Nettes’, were able to take an 11-8 lead into the 2nd. The 2nd quarter saw Pickens turn it up offensively & defensively. Offensively, the Nettes’ poured in 19 points, while only allowing 5 points in the frame to take a 30-11 lead into halftime.

 

The 3rd quarter, was a lot like the 1st quarter in a sense that it was closely played. Southeast Whitfield, outscored the Nettes’ 13-9 in the frame, but Pickens still held the advantage going to the 4th, 39-26. The Nettes’, closed out the game on a good run as they would only allow 3 4th quarter points, while scoring 21, to give them a 60-29 win over the Lady Raiders.

Nettes’ Back To .500, Pick Up First Region Win

Last night, after either playing on “neutral” court or on the road, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team was finally back home as they welcomed the Lady Panthers of Ridgeland for a region tilt. Pickens, looked to get back on track after a tough loss on the road to Heritage on Tuesday, & even up their overall, & region record.

 

The Nettes’, got off to a fast start on the home floor as they got things rolling early. Going to the 2nd quarter, Pickens led Ridgeland 20-7. To their credit, the Lady Panthers found their stride as their offense picked up in the 2nd quarter. After one half of play, the Nettes’ found themselves ahead, 32-20.

 

In the 3rd quarter, Ridgeland continued to climb back into the game as they outscored Pickens 17-14 in the frame, to cut the Nettes’ lead to 46-37, going to the fourth. The 4th quarter, saw an explosion of offense from the Nettes’. Pickens, poured in 28 points in the final quarter to pull away from Ridgeland and seal the win, 74-52.

Pickens, will be right back at home on Tuesday night as they take on the Cedartown Lady Bulldogs in a non-region match up. Tip off is set for 6 pm.

Dragonettes Open 2018-19 Basketball Season Against Forsyth Central

Last night, the PHS Nettes’ varsity basketball team welcomed the Forsyth Central Lady Bulldogs to the Dragons Den to tip off the 2018-19 campaign. Forsyth Central, is out of region 5 in the 7-A classification, so this would be a big, early test for Pickens coming off of a sweet 16 appearance in the 4-A tournament last season.

 

As you can imagine, both teams were looking to find a rhythm early on in this opening game of the season. Forsyth Central, used a run to propel them to a lead after the first quarter with a score of 19-5. The offense, picked up a little bit for the Nettes’ and in turn, the defense also picked up towards the end of the first half. The Lady Bulldogs held a 35-15 lead at the break.

 

Pickens, again continued to improve in the 2nd half as they outscored their 1st half point total in the 3rd as they put up 19 points. Forsyth Central continued to hold the lead going to the 4th, 58-34. The Nettes’, then outscored the Lady Bulldogs in the 4th, 15-13. Forsyth Central got the win, 71-49.

The Nettes’, will be back on the court this Saturday afternoon as they take on the Fannin Lady Rebels on Day 1 of the annual Thanksgiving Tournament. the Nettes’ will open up the tournament against the Lady Rebels at 3 pm, followed by the Dragons, who will be making their season debut against the Rebels, at 4:30. Games will be played at Gilmer High School. The Tournament, will start on Saturday, continue on Monday, & conclude on Tuesday.
