Nettes defeat Lady Cats in Thanksgiving Classic finale

Jasper, Ga — The third and final day of the PHS Thanksgiving Classic brought us a 515 rivalry match up as the Pickens Dragonettes, faced off against the Gilmer Lady Cats on Tuesday, November 25th. Barring a match up in the playoffs, this was the only time Pickens and Gilmer will have met this season. It was a high intensity, low scoring game. In the end, the Nettes, would come out on top, 42-35.

 

The Lady Cats, would go on an early run to start the game as Bree Burnette and Jace Sanderson, combined to score the first 7 points of the night. Ellison Steinhauer, would get the Nettes going with a 5-0 run to make it 7-5. Make Taylor, Sanderson, and Chelsey Griggs, would combine to go on a 6-0 run to make it 13-5. A three by Bree Jewell, would cut the Lady Cats lead to 13-8 heading to the second quarter.

 

A bucket by Steinhauer, would cut the lead to 3 to start the second quarter. Burnette and Caleigh Hofford, would then trade three point makes as Gilmer led it, 16-13. After a basket by Tania Rivera would cut the lead to 1, Sanderson, would make back to back baskets to give the Lady Cats a 20-15 lead. After Jewell split a pair of free throws, Steinhauer, would make a pair of free throws to close out the first half as the Lady Cats led it, 20-18 at the break.

 

Griggs, would get the second half started with a bucket to make it a 4 point game. Steinhauer, would respond with a 6-0 run to give the Nettes a 24-22 lead. Paula Robertson, would tie things up with a bucket. After a basket by Steinahuer, Robertson, would hit a three to give the Lady Cats a 27-26 lead. Ally Phillips, would split a pair of free throws to make it a 2 point game. Rivera, would hit a three just before the third quarter buzzer to give the Nettes a 29-28 lead.

 

Sanderson, would split a pair of free throws to begin the fourth quarter to tie things up at 29. Hofford, would hit her second three of the game to give the Nettes a 32-29 lead. Steinhauer, would then make a pair of free throws to stretch the lead out to 5. A basket by Sanderson, would trim the lead back to 3. A lay-in by Skyler Lathem, would put the Nettes back up 5.

After a bucket by Taylor, Reagan Ludington, would split a pair of free throws to make it 37-33. A basket by Burnette, would cut the lead to 2. Ludington and Steinhauer, would close out the game with several free throws as the Nettes would come away with the win, 42-35.

The Nettes, head into the first region games of the season with a record of 3-2. They will open up 6-AAA play on Friday, December 5th as they take on the Chestatee Lady War Eagles at home. Tip off is set for 7 pm.

Nettes open Thanksgiving Classic with win

Jasper, Ga — The PHS Thanksgiving Classic began on Saturday, November 22nd with eight teams, four on each side, competing in a round robin style format. Earlier games saw Woodstock defeat Gilmer in overtime in girls action. Darlington, would defeat Chattahoochee on the boys side. The Nettes, in a tightly contested game with 6A North Cobb, came away with a 60-54 win.

 

The Lady Warriors, would get the scoring started after a jumper by Hananiah Bell. The Nettes, would counter with back to back to back threes by Ellison Steinhauer, Tania Rivera, and Darbi Stanley to make it 9-2. A bucket by Jordyn Cowan, would put an end to the Nettes run. Stanley, would hit her second three of the quarter to make it 12-4. A three by Bell, would cut the lead to 12-7.

After a basket by Jaidyn Taylor made it 12-9, back to back buckets from Steinhauer and Reagan Ludington, would give the Nettes a 16-9 lead after one quarter of play.

 

Steinhauer, would continue the run to begin the second quarter as the Nettes built a 9 point lead. The Lady Warriors, would then rattle off a 6-0 run to cut the lead down to three. After a timeout by the Nettes, Ludington, would end the run to make it 20-15. After a bucket by the Lady Warriors, Steinhauer and Stanley, would combine to go on a 5-0 run to make it 25-17.

A basket by Taylor, would cut the Nettes lead down to six heading into halftime. At the break, Pickens led North Cobb, 25-19.

 

The Lady Warriors, would begin the second half with a 4-0 run to cut the lead down to two. A pair of free throws by Steinhauer, would make it 27-23. After a basket by Taylor, Steinhauer, would go on a 5-0 run to stretch the lead out to 32-25. A three by Isabella Vargo, would make it a four point game. Ludington, would then split a pair of free throws to make it 33-28.

After Steinhauer made the first of two free throw attempts, she would have to come out due to a spot pf blood on her jersey. Since they couldn’t get the blood out in the allotted time, Rivera, would come in and take and make the second free throw to make it 35-28. Caleigh Hofford, would then drill a corner three to make it a 10 point game. After a three by Vargo, Steinhauer, who had come back in, made a pair of free throws to make it 40-31.

Vargo, would then hit another three to cut the lead to 6. After a bucket by Steinhauer, Taylor, would make a layup while getting fouled. She would hit the free throw to make it 42-37. Ludington, would come back with her own and-1 play to stretch the lead to 8. Bell, would end the third quarter scoring with a pair of free throws and the Nettes would lead it, 45-39 heading into the fourth.

 

The Nettes, would go on a 5-0 run to begin the fourth as Skyler Lathem would make a layup and Stanley would hit her fourth three of the night to make it 50-39. After Taylor split a pair of free throws, Bell, would make a three to cut the lead to 7. Steinhauer, would stretch the lead back to 9 after a pair of free throws. After a bucket by the Lady Warriors, Khloe Pruett and Stanley would make back to back layups to give the Nettes a 56-45 lead.

Taylor, would convert her second and-1 play to cut the lead to 8. After both teams traded baskets, Taylor and Vargo, would go on a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 6. The Nettes, were able to play keep away in the last remaining seconds as they would hang on to win it, 60-54.

Nettes pick up win over #1 ranked Lady Rebels

Blue Ridge, GA — On Tuesday, November 18th, the Pickens Dragonettes, made their way up to Blue Ridge to take on the Fannin Lady Rebels. The Nettes, were coming off a tough opening season loss to a ranked A D-I Lamar County team on Saturday, November 15th. The Lady Rebels, were tipping off their season and came in ranked #1 in A D-I as the defending state champions. In a back and forth contest, the Nettes, were able to hang on to a 58-56 win.

 

Ellison Steinhauer, the lone senior on this year’s Nettes team, got the scoring started with a jumper to give Pickens an early lead. The Lady Rebels, would then dump the ball down to Reese Lewis, who hit a quick turnaround layup to tie the game. After getting fouled, Lewis, would split a pair of free throws to give Fannin a 3-2 advantage. Bree Jewell, would give the Nettes a 5-3 lead after hitting a three.

The Lady Rebels, would counter with an 8-0 run to take an 11-5 lead. Freshman Darbi Stanley, who has made an early impact, would end the run with a three to cut the lead to 11-8. After Lewis split another pair of free throws, Toccoa Hampton, would hit a three to make it 15-8. Tania Rivera, would close the first quarter with a three to cut the Lady Rebels lead down to 15-11.

 

A bucket by the Lady Rebels, would make it 17-11 to begin the second quarter, a 5-0 run by Rivera, would close the gap to just one. After a basket by Fannin put an end to the run, Steinhauer would split a pair of free throws and make a jumper. Reagan Ludington, would follow that with a lay in to make it a 21-20 Nettes advantage. Lewis, would give the Lady Rebels the lead after she would make a layup and hit the free throw.

A bucket by Steinhauer, would tie things up at 23. A three by Caleigh Hofford, would put the Nettes up, 26-23. After Lewis split a pair of free throws, Steinhauer, would sink both of her free throws to end the first half. At halftime, the Nettes led the Lady Rebels, 28-24.

 

Avi Ethington and Izzie Jabaley, would combine to go on a 7-0 run to start the third quarter to give the Lady Rebels a 31-28 lead. Rivera, would put an end to the run with a three to tie the game at 31. After Jabaley split a pair of free throws, Steinhauer and Stanley would combine for an 8-0 run to make it 39-32. After a basket by the Lady Rebels ended the run, Hofford and Steinhauer, would go on a 5-0 run to make it 44-34.

A 4-0 run by Jabaley, would close out the third quarter and cut the Nettes lead down to 44-38 heading to the fourth quarter.

 

The run would continue into the fourth quarter as Ethington would hit a three, and Jabaley would make a layup to cut the lead to one. Another big three by Rivera, would stretch the lead to 47-43. After a pair of free throws by Albany Cole, Stanley, would hit a jumper to make it 49-45. A free throw make by Lewis, would cut the lead to three. Steinhauer and Maggie Ledford, would then trade layups as the Nettes led it 53-48.

A basket by Jabaley, would once again cut the lead to three. It then became a free throw game as Steinhauer would hit four straight to make it 57-50. A three by Jabaley, would cut the lead to four. After Steinhauer split a pair of free throws, Jabaley, would make a running three pointer in the last few seconds of the game to make 58-56 as the Nettes, come away with the win.

Nettes defeat Lady Lions in preseason scrimmage

Jasper, Ga — With the ’25-’26 basketball season set to tip off, the Pickens Dragonettes, welcomed the Lady Lions of Christian Heritage for a scrimmage on Tuesday, November 11th. The Lady Lions, finished the ’24-’25 season with a 20-8 record. The Nettes, finished the ’24-’25 season with a 27-3 record. The Nettes, would lead the game throughout and win the game, 63-54.

 

The first quarter, was a back and forth battle with both teams trading the lead. Ellison Steinhauer and Reagan Ludington led the way for the Nettes with 6 and 5 points respectively. Darbi Stanley, Khloe Pruitt, and Caleigh Hofford rounded out the scoring for the Nettes in the first quarter. Heading to the second quarter, the Nettes, led the Lady Lions, 18-17.

 

In the second quarter, the Nettes, were on it defensively which led to some nice transition offense. The Nettes, outscored the Lady Lions 22-6 in the second quarter. Stanley, led the scoring in the second quarter with 6 points. Bree Jewell and Steinhauer, had 5 points each. Tonia Rivera, and Hofford, had 3 points each. At the half, the Nettes led the Lady Lions, 40-23.

 

The third quarter, was much like the first quarter with both teams trading buckets. The Lady Lions, would just outscore the Nettes, 15-13 in the frame. Steinhauer, led the scoring with 7 points. Hofford and Stanley each contributed 3 points in the quarter. Heading to the fourth quarter, the Nettes led the Lady Lions, 53-38.

 

The Lady Lions, would outscore the Nettes, 16-10 in the fourth quarter. Skyler Lathem, would lead the Nettes in scoring with 4 points. Jewell, Elin Porio, and Stanley all had 2 points. The Nettes, were able to hang on and pick up a 63-54 win in the scrimmage.

Nettes advance to 6-AAA Semifinals

Jasper, Ga — The girls side of the 6-AAA Region Tournament began on Tuesday, February 11th as teams were looking to officially punch their ticket to the State Tournament. The Pickens Dragonettes, the host team for the tournament, came into the tournament as the #1 seed. Their opponent, the Johnson Lady Knights, came into the tournament as the #8 seed. Earlier games saw GAC defeat Dawson, Chestatee defeat North Hall, and White County defeat Lumpkin. The Nettes, would get past the Lady Knights, 75-18.

The Nettes, would begin the game by going on a 16-0 run as all five starters Bella Martin, Reagan Ludington, Brylee Deering, Ellison Steinhauer, and Ellie Hollis all contributed to the run. A pair of free throws by Harbor Landers, would put an end to the run and make it 16-2. The Nettes, would then go on a 20-0 run as Martin, Tania Rivera, Steinhauer, and Bree Jewell would all score during the run.

A three by Elena Rhoads, would end that Nettes run and make it 36-5. A late three by Steinhauer, would give the Nettes a 39-5 lead heading to the second quarter.

A three by Ludington, would get the second quarter started to make it 42-5. After a layup by Landers, Jewell and Ludington, would go on a 6-0 run to make it 48-7. The Lady Knights, would then counter with a 5-0 run as Rhoads hit her second three of the game and Landers would follow with a layup to cut the lead to 48-12. The Nettes, would close out the first half on a 10-0 run as Ruby Flatt, Kylee Bozeman, Jewell, and Skyler Lathem would make it 58-12 at the break.

The second half would be shortened to 6 minute quarters. Landers, would begin the scoring in the third quarter with a bucket to make it 58-14. Flatt and Lathem, would then combine to go on a 7-0 run throughout the rest of the quarter as the Nettes, would take a 65-14 lead into the fourth.

Bozeman and Jewell, would begin the fourth quarter by going on a 5-0 run to make it 70-14. A pair of free throws by Taelor Carruth, would make it 70-16. Caleigh Hofford, would get into the score book with a layup to make it 72-16. Landers, would connect on another basket to make it 72-18. A late three pointer by Sophie Adams, would make it 75-18. The Nettes, would pick up the win, 75-18.

The winner, will go on to face the winner of White County and Chestatee on Saturday, February 15th. Tip off for the Nettes and Lady Spartans is set for 7 pm.
