Late Free Throws From Williams Lifts Nettes’ Past Christian Heritage

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Christian Heritage Lady Lions in the final home game of 2018. The Lady Lions, are out of the A-Private classification. After coming away with a big road win on Tuesday, the Nettes’ were looking to continue the momentum as they wrapped up the 2018 portion of their home schedule.

 

The Nettes’, started off the game hot jumping out to a good lead. By the end of the quarter, the Lady Lions got back into it, as Pickens held the lead, 13-8. In the 2nd quarter, the scoring was nearly identical to the first. Pickens, outscored Christian Heritage 13-9, to take a 26-17 lead into the break.

 

The 3rd quarter saw the Lady Lions claw their way back into the game. Christian Heritage, started off the half with a run before the Nettes’ settled it down. The Lady Lions would outscored Pickens 14-10 in the quarter, but the Nettes’ still held onto the lead going to the 4th, 36-31. In the 4th, the Lady Lions again made a big run as they would cut the Nettes’ lead down to one on several occasions. Late in the game, PHS Senior Torie Williams stepped to the free throw line, & would hit 3 free throws, the last two coming with 2 seconds left, to help seal a Nettes’ win over a very game Christian Heritage team, 51-48.

Nettes’ Host Lady Tigers To Begin 2019

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team welcomed the Dawson Lady Tigers to begin the 2019 portion of their schedule. After closing 2018 out going 2-1 in the Carolina Invitational, Pickens, looked to even the season series with the Lady Tigers, & get a big win at home.

 

The Lady Tigers, got off to a quick start, but the Nettes’ closed the gap to end the 1st. Dawson held the lead, 14-9. In the 2nd quarter, Pickens & Dawson both scored 9 points in the frame as the Lady Tigers continued to lead going to the break, 23-18.

 

In the 3rd, the Lady Tigers were able to extend their lead by using a 12-5 quarter run. Going to the 4th, Dawson led Pickens, 35-23. In the 4th, the Lady Tigers closed things out & picked up the win, 51-27.

The Nettes’, will again be in out of region competition tomorrow as they head to Forsyth County to take on Forsyth Central. These two teams met in the first game of the season, with the Lady Bulldogs coming out on top. This will be an early afternoon game as the tip off is scheduled for 2:30 pm.

Nettes’ Hang Tough With Dawson, Prepare For Holiday Tournament Next Week

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team maybe the short trip to Dawsonville to take on the Dawson Lady Tigers in non-region action. Pickens, came into the game having won two straight, & looking to pull off a big road win. Dawson, came into the game 7-3, & ranked in the top 10 in the 3A classification.

 

In the 1st quarter, both teams took turns holding the lead. As we went to the 2nd, the Lady Tigers took a 15-11 lead. In the 2nd quarter, the game remained extremely close as both teams were finding success scoring. The Nettes’, outscored Dawson slightly, 15-14, to cut the Lady Tiger lead to 29-26, going to the break.

 

In the 3rd, the game still remained close, despite Dawson stretching their lead out just a bit. Having outscored Pickens 20-14 in the frame, the Lady Tigers took a 49-40 lead, going to the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, Dawson used a 15-9 run to hold off a great effort by the Nettes’ to take this one, 64-49.

The Nettes’, will be taking part in a holiday tournament called the Carolina Invitational starting on Thursday in Charleston, South Carolina. Their first game will be against the Wando Lady Warriors. Wando, is out of the 5A classification in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. They are 3-5 on the season. Tip off is set for 5 pm at First Baptist High School in Charleston, South Carolina.

Nettes’ Open Tip-Off Tournament With Win Over Fannin

Yes ladies & gentlemen it’s that time once again as high school basketball has started in the state of Georgia. With that, comes the annual Thanksgiving Tip-Off Tournament being held this year in Ellijay at Gilmer High School. The tournament, features Pickens, Gilmer, Fannin, & Hiwassee Dam. Kicking off the tournament this year, would be the Nettes’ & the Lady Rebels of Fannin.

 

It was a back & forth frame to start the opening quarter as you got the feeling this one might be closely contested the entire way through. Pickens, was able to grab an 8-6 lead after one. The action, & the offense picked up for both teams in the 2nd quarter as the Nettes’ scored 20 points, while the Lady Rebels scored 19. Pickens, continued to lead Fannin as we hit the half, 28-25.

 

In the 3rd quarter, Fannin, off the strength of good defensive effort, held the Nettes’ to just 5 points, while scoring 13, to take the lead going to the 4th, 38-33. In the 4th, the defense for Pickens stepped up and the offense fed off of that to close things out. The Nettes’, closed the 4th with a 17-8 run to get a 50-46 win.

 

The Nettes’ will be back on the court tomorrow afternoon as they will take on the Hiwassee Dam Lady Eagles at 3 pm. Reminder, the game will be played in Ellijay at Gilmer High School.

Nettes’ Win Third Straight, Host Gilmer On Tuesday

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the trip up to Walker County to take on the LaFayette Lady Ramblers in a 6-AAAA region match up. Pickens, came in winners of two straight, & looking to improve to 2-1 in the region.

 

In the 1st quarter, it was the home team that took control early. After one, the Lady Ramblers led Pickens, 13-10. In the 2nd, the offense & defense for the Nettes’ picked  up. Pickens, outscored LaFayette 15-13 in the frame to cut the Lady Rambler lead to 26-25 at the half. In the 2nd quarter, Junior Mykenzie Weaver reached the 1,000 point mark for her career.

In the 3rd, the Nettes’ would grab the lead from LaFayette. Outscoring the Lady Ramblers 18-16, Pickens held a 43-42 lead going to the 4th. The 4th saw the Nettes’ pull away. Pickens, outscored LaFayette 22-12 in the final frame to get the win, 65-54.

Nettes’ Suffer Tough Defeat In Region Opener

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team, traveled up to Ringgold to take on the Lady Generals of Heritage in the opening game of 6-AAAA region play. Pickens, was coming off of a 2nd place finish last week in the annual Thanksgiving Tournament & had confidence coming into this game with Heritage after sweep the regular season series, & besting them in the region tournament semifinals last season.

 

In the first quarter, the Nettes’ jumped out to a quick start in a big time early road game. After one quarter of play, Pickens found themselves ahead of the Lady Generals, 19-12. For the bulk of the 2nd quarter, both teams traded bucket for bucket. The Nettes’, outscored Heritage 10-8, giving them a 29-20 lead, going into the break.

 

In the 3rd, the tide began to turn ever so slightly. By outscoring Pickens in the 3rd, 13-8, the Lady Generals cut into the Nettes’ lead as we headed to the 4th, 37-33. In the 4th, Heritage would go on a big run before the Nettes’ got their first bucket of the frame. The Lady Generals, used a 24-12 quarter advantage to take this one, 57-49.

Nettes’ Back To .500, Pick Up First Region Win

Last night, after either playing on “neutral” court or on the road, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team was finally back home as they welcomed the Lady Panthers of Ridgeland for a region tilt. Pickens, looked to get back on track after a tough loss on the road to Heritage on Tuesday, & even up their overall, & region record.

 

The Nettes’, got off to a fast start on the home floor as they got things rolling early. Going to the 2nd quarter, Pickens led Ridgeland 20-7. To their credit, the Lady Panthers found their stride as their offense picked up in the 2nd quarter. After one half of play, the Nettes’ found themselves ahead, 32-20.

 

In the 3rd quarter, Ridgeland continued to climb back into the game as they outscored Pickens 17-14 in the frame, to cut the Nettes’ lead to 46-37, going to the fourth. The 4th quarter, saw an explosion of offense from the Nettes’. Pickens, poured in 28 points in the final quarter to pull away from Ridgeland and seal the win, 74-52.

Dragonettes Open 2018-19 Basketball Season Against Forsyth Central

Last night, the PHS Nettes’ varsity basketball team welcomed the Forsyth Central Lady Bulldogs to the Dragons Den to tip off the 2018-19 campaign. Forsyth Central, is out of region 5 in the 7-A classification, so this would be a big, early test for Pickens coming off of a sweet 16 appearance in the 4-A tournament last season.

 

As you can imagine, both teams were looking to find a rhythm early on in this opening game of the season. Forsyth Central, used a run to propel them to a lead after the first quarter with a score of 19-5. The offense, picked up a little bit for the Nettes’ and in turn, the defense also picked up towards the end of the first half. The Lady Bulldogs held a 35-15 lead at the break.

 

Pickens, again continued to improve in the 2nd half as they outscored their 1st half point total in the 3rd as they put up 19 points. Forsyth Central continued to hold the lead going to the 4th, 58-34. The Nettes’, then outscored the Lady Bulldogs in the 4th, 15-13. Forsyth Central got the win, 71-49.

The Nettes’, will be back on the court this Saturday afternoon as they take on the Fannin Lady Rebels on Day 1 of the annual Thanksgiving Tournament. the Nettes’ will open up the tournament against the Lady Rebels at 3 pm, followed by the Dragons, who will be making their season debut against the Rebels, at 4:30. Games will be played at Gilmer High School. The Tournament, will start on Saturday, continue on Monday, & conclude on Tuesday.

Nettes’ Close Out Regular Season With Big Win On Senior Night

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders for the regular season finale & Senior night. This game, was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but winter weather forced it to be moved to last night. Prior to the game beginning, Senior Torie Williams was recognized for scoring her 1,000th career point last Friday at Northwest Whitfield. Williams, became the 21st Nettes player with 1,000 career points, & the 2nd this season to join the club (Junior Mykenzie Weaver hit the feat prior to Christmas).

 

In the first quarter, it was neck & neck with both teams. The home team held a 11-8 lead over the Lady Raiders going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, Pickens extended their lead turning great defense into offense as they outscored Southeast Whitfield 25-9 in the frame. Williams, also broke her own record for most three’s in a season with the two she made in the quarter, Going into the half, the Nettes led, 36-17.

 

In the 3rd, the Nettes’ carried over the defense they displayed in the 2nd quarter as it led to some great transition opportunities for Pickens. The Nettes’, outscored the Lady Raiders 18-5 in the 3rd to take a 54-22 lead into the 4th. The Nettes’, closed things out in the 4th taking this one, 67-31.

Nettes’, Complete Season Sweep Of Ridgeland In A Big Way

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the long trip up to Rossville to take on the Ridgeland Lady Panthers in 6-AAAA action. Pickens, came into the game coming off of a big upset over the Heritage Lady Generals, handing them their first region loss in the process, & were looking to keep momentum going with another region win.

 

The 1st quarter, started out slow for the road team until the 2nd unit came into the game. That 2nd unit, propelled the Nettes’ into the lead as we headed to the 2nd, Pickens up, 18-11. The Nettes’, extended their lead in the 2nd quarter with defense. The defense of the Nettes’ helped them to a 25-6 quarter run, to take a 43-17 lead going into the half.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens continued to lead as they used a 15-8 quarter run to extend their lead to 58-25 going to the fourth. In the 4th, the Nettes’, closed out the game with a 23-6 run to grab the win, 81-33.

Nettes Fall To Lady Cats, Travel To Northwest Whitfield Friday

Last night the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the short trip up 515 to take on their rival, the Gilmer Lady Cats. Coming into the game, Gilmer, was a game ahead of Pickens in the region standings. Making this game, even more important than it already was.

 

These two rivals went back & forth in the opening quarter, matching bucket for bucket. After one, the Lady Cats held a 12-11 lead. In the 2nd quarter, the ball just would not fall in the hoop for the Nettes. Gilmer, went on a 14-5 quarter run to make it 26-16, going to the half.

 

The 3rd quarter saw Pickens continue to try to get their shots to fall while the Lady Cats extended their lead. Using a 20-8 run, Gilmer took a 46-24 lead into the 4th. The Lady Cats, were able to finish this one off & get the win, 65-31.

Weaver & Williams Power Nettes’ Past LaFayette, Showdown With Gilmer On Tuesday

This past Friday night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Lady Ramblers of LaFayette in another key 6-AAAA meeting. Coming into the game, the Nettes’, firmly held onto the 4th spot in the region standings, with LaFayette behind them in 5th. Pickens, defeated a much improved LaFayette team earlier in the season, & came in looking for the sweep.

 

We saw a back & forth 1st quarter to start this ball game. In their last game, LaFayette gave the top team, Northwest Whitfield, all they could handle & this game had the makings of a tight one. Pickens, held a 12-10 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, the Lady Ramblers made a run to take the lead from the Nettes’. Using a 16-12 quarter advantage, LaFayette grabbed a 26-24 lead into the break.

 

At the half, the 2018-19 PHS Athletics Hall of Fame inductees were recognized. The inductees included: former coach Harold Culbreth, baseball player Matthew Dunn, the Lawson Family, & former basketball/football/golf player & current Dragons assistant football & boys basketball coach Stephen Hunter.

In the 3rd, the offense for the Nettes’ came to life and reclaimed the lead from the Lady Ramblers. Using a 26-15 3rd quarter run, Pickens took a 50-41 lead over LaFayette going to the 4th & final quarter. In a close 4th quarter which saw the Nettes’ just outscore the Lady Ramblers 16-15, Pickens held on for a very important win, 66-56.

Nettes’ Make Late Run, Fall To Northwest Whitfield

This past Friday night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Lady Bruins of Northwest Whitfield in a big region match up. This, was the first meeting between the two teams since the region championship game last season.

 

In the opening quarter, the Nettes’ came out on fire. Northwest Whitfield got things going on their end by the end of the quarter, and took a 13-11 lead going to the 2nd. Both teams had success in the 2nd quarter, as the Lady Bruins stretched their lead slightly as they took a 31-23 advantage over Pickens going to the break.

 

The 3rd quarter, was closely contested with Northwest Whitfield scoring 19 points, & the Nettes’ scoring 15 points. The Lady Bruins, would take a 50-38 lead, going to the 4th. In the 4th, Pickens started making a late charge. At one point in the 4th, the Nettes’, cut the Northwest Whitfield lead down to 4. The Lady Bruins however, would be able to hold on and pick up a 66-59 win.

‘Nettes Advance To 4-A State Tournament, Face Heritage In Semi-Finals On Thursday

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Dalton to take part in the first round of the 6-AAAA Region Tournament being held at Southeast Whitfield. Pickens, came in as the #2 seed and was matched up with the #7 seed & host team, the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders. The winner, would advance to the region semi-finals, & to the 2018 4-A State Tournament.

 

The 1st quarter, started off a little slow for the ‘Nettes to begin things. Pickens, got a big pick me up to end the frame as Junior Torie Williams nailed a buzzer beater from half court to give the ‘Nettes a 17-8 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, Pickens settled in and was able to get things going on both ends of the floor. Using a 23-7 quarter advantage, the ‘Nettes took a 40-15 lead over Southeast Whitfield going to the break.

 

Pickens, carried their solid play from the 2nd quarter over to the 3rd as they extended their lead over the Lady Raiders. With the help of a 21-9 run, the ‘Nettes took a 61-24 lead going to the 4th and final quarter. With a 12-10 quarter run in the 4th, the ‘Nettes sealed the win, 73-34.

With the win, the ‘Nettes have secured a spot in the 2018 4-A State Tournament, & have advanced to the semi-finals of the 6-AAAA Region Tournament where they will meet the Heritage Lady Generals. Pickens, won both meetings during the regular season, but will need to win this one if they want to host a state tournament game. Tip off is scheduled for 4 pm on Thursday. Game will be played at Southeast Whitfield.

‘Nettes Earn Sweep Over LaFayette, Host Gilmer Friday Night

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the long trip up to LaFayette to take on the LaFayette Lady Ramblers in a 6-AAAA match up. Pickens, won the first meeting between these two teams, & came in winners of five in a row.

 

In the opening quarter, the defense for the ‘Nettes made it’s mark early on this game as it helped transition to buckets on the offensive end. Going to the 2nd, Pickens held a 14-4 advantage over LaFayette. In the 2nd, the defensive effort from the first quarter carried over, & the ‘Nettes were able to stretch their lead on the Lady Ramblers. Using a 20-10 quarter advantage, Pickens took a 34-14 lead into the break.

 

In the 2nd half, the ‘Nettes continued their solid play from the first two quarters. The 3rd quarter, would end up being the closest quarter in terms of scoring as Pickens outscored the Lady Ramblers 18-11, but still held a lead of 52-25 going to the 4th. In the 4th, the ‘Nettes finished the ball game strong with the 2nd unit & younger girls in. Pickens, would close the game on a 22-3 run. The ‘Nettes, picked up the win, 74-28.

Pickens, is now 14-2 overall on the season & now 6-1 in region play after last night’s win. They have now tied Northwest Whitfield in the win column with 6 victories. The ‘Nettes, will now turn their focus to Friday night as they will welcome their rivals from just up 515, the Gilmer Lady Cats, to the Dragons Den for a region meeting. Tip off is scheduled for 7 pm.

This past Friday, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team welcomed the Ridgeland Lady Panthers to the Dragons Den in a 6-AAAA match up. The ‘Nettes, came into the ball game at 7-0 after a big road when this past Tuesday against Heritage.

 

In the first quarter, it was a feeling out process for both teams as both got things going. The ‘Nettes, were able to grab the lead heading into the 2nd quarter, 16-10. In the 2nd, Pickens continued to turn their defense into offense. Ridgeland, despite several turnovers during the frame, stayed within striking distance of the ‘Nettes. The ‘Nettes, used a 12-8 quarter run, to take a 30-18 lead into the break.

 

In the 2nd half, the defense for Pickens really picked up. In the 3rd, the ‘Nettes added to their lead using an 11-6 quarter run. Pickens lead the Lady Panthers 41-24 going to the 4th. A 10-5 quarter run by Pickens in the 4th sealed their 8th win in a row as they took this one, 51-29.

The ‘Nettes, will face their toughest test to date so far during the season when they host the Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins tomorrow. The Lady Bruins, are 8-1, & 4-0 in 6-AAAA. Tied atop the standings with Pickens. The Lady Bruins, are averaging 63.4 ppg while giving up 33.6 ppg in 9 games so far this season. The ‘Nettes, are averaging 54.6 ppg, while giving up 36.3 ppg. Tip off for this one is scheduled for 6 pm.
