Dominant second half sends Nettes to region semifinals

Norcross, Ga — On Monday, February 16th, the Pickens Dragons, battled back to move past the Chestatee War Eagles to advance to the semifinals on the boys side. The Dragonettes, looked to punch their ticket to the girls semifinals on Tuesday, February 17th as they took on the Dawson Lady Tigers. It looked like the makings of another close game between the two after the first half, but the Nettes would take over and outscore the Lady Tigers 39-11 in the second half to pick up the win 64-31.

 

The Lady Tigers, would jump out to an early lead to start the game as Ava Roberson and Lilly Abbott, would combine to go on a 5-0 run. Darbi Stanley and Abbott, would then trade baskets as Dawson led it, 7-2. Skyler Lathem, Tania Rivera, and Ellison Steinhauer, would then combine for a 5-0 run to tie the game at 7. The Lady Tigers, would counter that run with another combined 5-0 run by Roberson and Abbott to make it 12-7.

A three pointer and a pair of free throws by Reagan Ludington, would tie the game up at 12. A late bucket by Abbott, would give the Lady Tigers a 14-12 lead heading to the second quarter.

 

Back to back baskets by Steinhauer, would open up the second quarter as the Nettes took a 16-14 lead. A bucket by Roberson, would tie the game at 16. A big momentum shifter came after Stanley, would hit a three as she was being fouled. Stanley, would make the free throw to give the Nettes a 20-16 advantage. Abbott and Roberson, doing the heavy lifting for the Lady Tigers, would tie the game after back to back baskets.

A combined 5-0 run by Ludington and Rivera to close out the first half, would give the Nettes a 25-20 lead over the Lady Tigers heading into the break.

 

Steinhauer, the 6-AAA Girls Region Player of the Year and North Georgia commit, would absolutely take over for the Nettes in the third quarter. Steinhauer, would begin the second half by going on an 8-0 run to stretch the lead out to 33-20. A layup by Abbott, would end the run and make it 33-22. Steinhauer and Stanley, would then go on a combined 8-0 run to make it 41-22.

Abbott, and Steinhauer, would then trade free throw makes to end the third quarter as the Nettes would take a 43-24 lead into the fourth.

 

Rivera, Ludington, and Stanley, would start the fourth quarter by going on a combined 10-0 run to make it 53-24. Abbott, would end the run by completing an and-1 play to cut the lead to 53-27. After a pair of free throws by Steinahuer, Carleigh Hoffard, would get a layup to go to make it 57-27. A three by Abbott, would cut the lead to 57-30. Khloe Pruitt and Stanley, would combine to go on a 5-0 run to make it 62-30.

After Roberson split a pair of free throws, Ludington, would end the scoring by making a pair of free throws as the Nettes would come away with a 64-31 win.

Nettes will be #2 seed in next week’s region tournament

Dawsonville, Ga — Friday, February 13th marked the end of the regular season as the Pickens Dragonettes, took on the Dawson Lady Tigers. The Nettes, already had the #2 seed locked up coming into the game. For the Lady Tigers, there was a chance for them to get the #6 seed depending on the Chestatee/North Hall final. The Nettes, were able to hold off the Lady Tigers after a furious fourth quarter rally as they picked up the win, 43-38.

 

The game started off with something special. After a lay-in by the Nettes, Lady Tigers Senior Madi Suta, playing here final home game for Dawson, was able to make a layup before being subbed out. The Nettes, would then go on a 5-0 run as Darbi Stanley would hit a three, and Reagan Ludington, would get a basket to go to make it 7-2. A bucket by Baylee Green, would cut the lead to three.

The 6-AAA Region Player of the Year and recent North Georgia signee Ellison Steinhauer, would go on a 4-0 run to make it 11-4. A 5-0 run by Laila Woody and Ava Roberson, would trim the lead to two. The two teams would trade baskets to end the first quarter as the Nettes took a 14-11 lead into the second quarter.

 

Steinhauer, would get things going to begin the second quarter as she would make it a five point game. Lilly Abbott and Steinhauer, would then trade buckets as the Nettes led it, 18-13. A combined 5-0 run by Abbott and Green, would tie the game at 18. Ludington and Steinhauer, would answer with a 6-0 run as the Nettes went ahead, 24-18. A pair of free throws by Kadence Rhodes, would end the run and cut the lead to four. A late three by Stanley, would give the Nettes a 27-20 advantage heading to halftime.

 

Green, would open the second half by cutting the lead back down to five. The Nettes, would counter with a 9-0 combined run by Steinhauer, Tania Rivers, and Ludington. Abbott, would end the run with a basket to cut the Nettes lead to 36-24 heading to the fourth.

 

The Lady Tigers, would claw back into the game as Abbott and Roberson, would combine to go on a 10-0 run to trim the lead down to 36-34. A pair of free throws by Steinhauer, would end the run and push the lead up to four. After another bucket by Roberson, Steinahuer, would make four straight from the free throw line to give the Nettes a 42-36 lead. A pair of free throws by Abbott, would once again make it a four point game.

Ludington, would then split a pair of free throws to make it 43-38. The Nettes, would be able to hang on as they picked up a big win on the road, 43-38.

Stanley leads the way in Nettes win over Dawson

Jasper, Ga — We’re officially halfway through the 6-AAA region schedule as the Pickens Dragonettes, took on the Dawson Lady Tigers on Tuesday, January 20th. The Nettes, were coming off a tough loss to region leader GAC last Friday. The Lady Tigers, were looking to rebound after a loss to White County. The Nettes, got big contributions from Freshman Darbi Stanley and Junior Tania Rivera as they were able to come away with a 57-44 victory.

 

Reagan Ludington, would get the scoring started for the Nettes in the first quarter as she would knock down a three. Ellison Steinhauer, would then go to the line and make a pair of free throws to give the Nettes a 5-0 lead. The Lady Tigers, who were without two players for this game, would turn to Lilly Abbott and she would end up carrying the load for Dawson. Abbott, would give the Lady Tigers the lead after a 9-0 run.

The Nettes, would respond with a 13-0 run led by Steinhauer, Skyler Lathem, Stanley, and Bree Jewell. A late foul, would send Andee Howell to the line where she would make both free throws to cut the Nettes lead to 18-11 heading to the second quarter.

 

Abbott, would open the second quarter with a three to cut the lead to four. A nice drive to the basket by Jewell, would lead to a layup to make it 20-14. After a layup by Abbott, Stanley, would hit a three to make it 23-16. Abbott, would get to the rim again for another basket. Steinhauer, would bring the lead back to 7 with a pair of free throws. Kadence Rhodes, would cut the lead back to 5 after she made a pair of free throws.

Abbott, would then add another three to cut the lead down to 2. After a three by Rivera, Abbott, would end the first half with another three to make it 28-26 Nettes heading into the half.

 

Rivera, would begin the second half with a three to make it 31-26. After a three by Abbott, Stanley, would knock down back to back threes to make it 37-29. A 5-0 combined run by Rhodes and Abbott, would cut the Nettes lead down to 3. A pair of free throws by Caleigh Hoffard, would stretch the lead back to 5. Ramsey Smith, would get a bucket to go to cut the lead back down to 3. Back to back threes by Stanley and Rivera to close the third quarter, would give the Nettes a 45-36 lead heading to the fourth.

 

Stanley, Rivera, Steinhauer, and Hoffard, would continue the run started by Stanley and Rivera to end the third quarter to begin the fourth quarter to make it 57-36. The Lady Tigers, would end the game on an 8-0 combined run by Baylee Green, Abbott, and Rhodes. The Nettes, withstand a game high 31 points by Abbott to pick up the win, 57-44.

Nettes split with Lady Tigers to end regular season

Jasper, Ga — On Friday, February 7th, the Pickens Dragonettes, welcomed the Dawson Lady Tigers to the Dragons Den for the finale to the ’24-’25 regular season. Coming into the game, the Nettes, were 21-2 and 12-1 in 6-AAA play. The Lady Tigers, came into the game at 15-9 and 8-5 in 6-AAA play. The Nettes, were looking to even up the season series after the Lady Tigers took the first meeting on January 14th. Even up the series they did as the Nettes picked up the win, 67-34.

Eva Bishop, would give the Lady Tigers an early 2-0 lead after a jumper. Bella Martin, would respond by going on a 5-0 run to give the Nettes a 5-2 lead. Bishop, would end the run and cut the lead to one after a layup. Reagan Ludington and Ellison Steinhauer, would then make back to back buckets to give the Nettes a 9-4 lead. Maddie Siuta, would hit a three to cut the lead down to two.

After Ludington and Bishop traded baskets, Steinhauer, would close out the first quarter by going on a 5-0 run. Included in that run, was a running three pointer as the clock expired. Heading to the second quarter, the Nettes, led the Lasy Tigers, 16-9.

Steinhauer, would continue her run to begin the second quarter as she would score the first five points of the frame to stretch the Nettes lead out to 21-9. A three by Siuta, would end the run and cut the lead down to 21-12. Steinhauer and Tania Rivera, would then hit back to back threes to make it 27-12. The two teams would trade buckets for the remainder of the first half as the Nettes led the Lady Tigers, 33-19 at the break.

Martin and Steinhauer, would pen the second half with back to back baskets to make it 37-19. Rielyn Talley, would hit a three to cut the lead to 37-22. After Ellie Hollis made a pair of free throws, Bishop, would make a layup to cut the lead to 39-24. A 5-0 run by Ludington and Martin, would extend the lead to 44-24. After Bishop split a pair of free throws, Steinhauer and Hollis would end the quarter on a 7-0 run as the Nettes led the Lady Tigers, 51-25.

Addison Smith, got the fourth quarter going with a bucket to make it 51-27. Kylee Bozeman, would respond with a three to make it 54-27. After a bit of a back and forth, Steinhauer and Rivera, would combine for a 7-0 run to make it 63-31. A basket by Bishop, would put an end to the run and make it 63-33. Steinhauer, would then hit a three, and Skyler Lathem, would split a pair of free throws to make it 67-33.

Kadence Rhodes, would split a pair of late free throws as the Nettes, would pick up the win in the regular season finale, 67-34.

Nettes sweep Johnson on Senior Night

Jasper, Ga — On Tuesday, February 4th, the Pickens Dragonettes, welcomed the Lady Knights of Johnson to the Dragons Den for the second to last region game of the regular season. It was a special night for the Nettes as it was Senior Night. The three Seniors, Brylee Deering, Ellie Hollis, and Bella Martin, would all be recognized for their contributions during their time at Pickens High School. As for the game, the Nettes, would run their win streak up to 6 games as they defeated the Lady Knights, 70-18.

Martin, would start the game off quickly with a three to make it 3-0. That would help spark a 14-0 run to open the first quarter as Martin, Hollis, and Reagan Ludington all contributed to the run. A layup by Karina Ordonez, would put an end to the run and make it 14-2. After a three by Ludington, Harbor Landers would split a pair of free throws to make it 17-3.

The Nettes, would end the first quarter on a 6-0 run as Bree Jewell and Ellison Steinhauer, would hit back to back threes to make it 23-3 going to the second quarter.

The Nettes, would carry over that run to begin the second quarter as Steinhauer, Martin, and Skyler Lathem, would combine to score the first 10 points of the period to stretch the lead out to 33-3. Another layup by Ordonez, would put an end to the run and make it 33-5. The Nettes, would close out the first half on a 10-0 run as Martin would score 4 points, and Ruby Flatt would hit two threes to make it 43-5 at the half.

A bucket by Steinhauer, and a three by Martin, would get the third quarter going as the Nettes led it, 48-5. After a basket by Landers, Steinhauer and Hollis would make back to back buckets to make it 52-7. After Emily Hernandez got her first points of the game, Hollis, Ludington, and Jewell would combine to go on a 7-0 run to make it 59-9. Hernandez, would end the run with a three to make it 59-12.

Jewell, would close out the third quarter by going on a 5-0 run to give the Nettes a 64-12 lead over the Lady Knights heading to the fourth quarter.

Landers, started the shortened fourth quarter with a three. That would begin a 6-0 run for the Lady Knights as that made it 64-18. Flatt and Jewell, would end the run by hitting back to back threes as the Nettes would pick up the 70-18 win on Senior Night.

Tough second half leads to Nettes first region loss

Dawsonville, Ga — After canceling their scheduled game with Walton over the weekend, the Pickens Dragonettes were finally back on the court on Tuesday, January 14th as they traveled up to Dawsonville to take on the Dawson Lady Tigers. Coming into the game, the Nettes, were 15-1 overall and 6-0 in 6-AAA. The Lady Tigers, were 10-7 overall and 3-3 in 6-AAA. The Lady Tigers, would use a 35-19 second half to comeback from as many as 12 to pick up the 53-46 win.

In the first quarter, Reagan Ludington got the scoring started with a three. The Lady Tigers, would respond with a 5-0 run as Maddie Siuta would hit a three to tie it, and Eva Bishop would make a layup to give the Lady Tigers a 5-3 lead. The Nettes, would go on their own 5-0 run as Citadel XC/Track commit Brylee Deering, would hit a three and Bella Martin would make a pair free throws to give the Nettes an 8-5 lead.

A bucket by Ramsey Smith, would cut the lead down to 8-7. Ellison Steinhauer, would get in on the action towards the end of the quarter as she would make a layup to give the Nettes a 10-7 lead. After a basket by the Lady Tigers cut the lead back down to 1, Martin would make a late bucket to give the Nettes a 12-9 lead heading to the second quarter.

The second quarter began with the Nettes going on a 9-0 run to stretch the lead out to 21-9. A three by Siuta, would end the run and cut the lead down to 9. After a bucket by Steinhauer, Baylee Green and Ava Roberson, would combine for a mini 4-0 run to make it 23-16. A three by Steinhauer, would push the lead back to 10. After a layup by Bishop, Martin, would split a pair of free throws to close the first half with the Nettes ahead, 27-18.

The second half started with Roberson making a layup to cut the lead to 7. The Nettes, would push the lead to 11 after Steinhauer split a pair of free throws, and Ellie Hollis would nail a three to make it 31-20. After Bishop split a pair of free throws, Martin, would make a three to give the Nettes a 34-21 lead. Bishop, would then go on a 4-0 run to cut the lead back down to 9.

Tania Rivera, would end the run with a bucket to make it 36-25. After Bishop again split a pair of free throws, Rivera would get another shot to drop to make it 38-26. The Lady Tigers, would close out the third quarter on a 7-0 run as they cut the lead down to 38-33 heading to the fourth.

Steinhauer, began the fourth quarter with a basket to make it 40-33. The Lady Tigers, would then go on a 10-0 run to take their first lead since the first quarter at 43-40. A three by Steinhauer, would tie it up at 43. After a bucket by Bishop, Martin would hit a three to give the Nettes a 46-45 lead. The Lady Tigers, would close out the game on an 8-0 run as they outscored the Nettes, 20-8 in the fourth to pick up a 53-46 win.

Nettes win back and forth game with Lady Spartans

Jasper, Ga — The Pickens Dragonettes, were back home on Thursday, January 9th as they welcomed the Greater Atlanta Christian Lady Spartans to the Dragons Den for another big time game in 6-AAA. Due to the weather that was on the way, this game got moved up from Friday, January 10th. The Nettes, came into the game with a 14-1 overall record and 5-0 in region play. The Lady Spartans, came into the game 9-5 overall and 2-3 in region play. This ball game, was back and forth throughout as the Nettes would pull away late to come away with a 57-47 win.

The Nettes, would get things going to open the first quarter as Ellison Steinhauer made her way into the lane for the bucket. After both teams traded baskets, Reagan Ludington would break the tie to make it 7-4 Nettes. Throughout the rest of the first quarter, both teams would each score four points as the Nettes would lead the Lady Spartans, 11-8 heading to the second quarter.

After a bit of a back and forth to open the second quarter, the Nettes would go on a run to build up a 21-11 lead. The Lady Spartans, would counter with a big run of their own to cut the lead down to 2. The Nettes, would end the first half on a good note as they were able to stretch their lead out to five before the break. Heading into halftime, the Nettes, led the Lady Spartans, 27-22.

The Lady Spartans, would come out to start the second half with a run to take their first lead of the game a 32-31. The Nettes, would battle back as they would outscore the Lady Spartans, 10-3 the rest of the quarter to retake the lead and hold a 41-35 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter saw both teams swap buckets as the Lady Spartans kept trying to chip away at the Nettes lead. The Nettes, would open up an 11 points lead over the Lady Spartans later on in the quarter. The biggest lead of the game. The Nettes, would come away with a 57-47 win to remain unbeaten in region play.

The Nettes, were scheduled to take on Walton on Saturday, January 11th, but with the weather coming in, all after school activities were cancelled for Saturday. No word on if that game will be made up or not. The next game on the schedule for the Nettes, is a road game at Dawson as they battle the Lady Tigers. That one is set for Tuesday, January 14th. Tip off is scheduled for 6 pm.

Nettes to face Lady Wolves in 7-AAA Region Championship

Dahlonega, Ga — It was semifinal Thursday on February 15th as the Pickens Dragonettes took on the Dawson Lady Tigers for a spot in the 7-AAA Region Championship game. These two teams split their two regular season meetings with the home team getting the win on those occasions. Behind big games from Bella Hopkins and Caroline Mullins, the Nettes picked up a 67-45 win over the Lady Tigers.

 

The Lady Tigers, got things going to start the ball game with a three from Kindra Coker to give them an early lead. After a tough layup by Hopkins to cut the lead to 1, Morgan Chester and Abby Samples-Slaton would make back to back layups to stretch the lead to 7-2. A three by Hopkins would cut the lead to 7-5. After a bucket by Eva Bishop, the Nettes would go on an 8-0 run with Hopkins and Mullins to take the lead, 13-9.

A three by Samples-Slaton would cut the lead down to 1. The Nettes, would end the first quarter with a 5-0 run as Mullins made a layup, and Hopkins hit her second three to make it 18-12 going to the second quarter.

 

Hopkins, continued her offensive onslaught to begin the second quarter as she hit a three, and completed an and-1 play to make it 24-12. Bishop, broke what ended up being an 11-0 run by the Nettes with a basket to cut the lead to 10. The Nettes, would answer with an 8-0 run as Bella Martin would hit a three, then Ellison Steinhauer would make back to back layups and a free throw to make it 32-14.

A 4-0 run by Bishop and Chester would cut the lead down to 32-18. After a basket by Steinhauer, Chester would go on a 4-0 run to make it 34-22. Back to back threes from Hopkins closed out the first half as the Nettes took a 40-22 lead into the break.

 

Bishop, started the second half with a bucket to make it 40-24. Mullins would answer back with a layup of her own. After Steinhauer split a pair of free throws, Ava Roberson would get her name into the score book with a layup to make it 43-26. Hopkins, would then score her first points of the second half to make it a 19-point game. The two teams would then trade baskets as Martin would hit her second three to make it 52-32.

The Lady Tigers, would end the third quarter on a 6-0 run as Chester, Anna Ayers, and Heather Burt would help cut the lead down to 52-38 going to the fourth.

 

After a couple of fouls and turnovers by both teams, Steinhauer began the fourth quarter scoring with a three to make it 55-38. Hopkins, would then complete an and-1 to make it 58-38. Samples-Slaton, would end the 5-0 run with a bucket to make it 58-40. A 5-0 run from Martin would give the Nettes a 63-40 lead. A three by Coker would cut the lead to 63-43.

Mullins, would make back to back layups to make it 67-43. Chester, would score the final points of the game with a layup as the Nettes come away with the 67-45 victory.

The Nettes, will now turn their focus to Saturday, February 17th as they face off against the Wesleyan Lady Wolves for the 7-AAA Region Championship. Wesleyan defeated the White County Lady Warriors 87-55 to advance to the region title game. Tip off is set for 6 pm and will be played at Lumpkin.

Nettes advance to AAA State Tournament

Jasper, Ga — It was the ladies turn on Tuesday, February 13th for the first round of the 7-AAA Region Tournament. Just like the Dragons, by virtue of being the #2 seed, the Nettes were the host school for the first round. Earlier games saw White County defeat Lumpkin at the buzzer 45-43, and Dawson hold off a very game Gilmer team, 36-30. The Nettes, were able to join those two as they defeated the West Hall Lady Spartans, 74-12.

 

The first quarter started with the Nettes going on a 10-0 run. Caroline Mullins, would score 8 of the 10 points with Brylee Deering scoring the other 2 points with a layup. Yatsar Matos, ended the run with a bucket to make it 10-2. The Nettes, would then go on a 9-0 run with Ellison Steinhauer hitting back to back threes, then Bella Martin connected on a three to make it 19-2. The Lady Spartans, ended that run with a three of their own to make it 19-5.

The Nettes, would close out the first quarter with another 9-0 run as Emery Steinhauer hit a three, Caleigh Hoffard made a layup, and Mullins made back to back layups. Going to the second quarter, the Nettes led the Lady Spartans, 28-5.

 

That run, continued to begin the second quarter as Mullins made another layup, and Deering completed the and-1 to make it 33-5. After a bucket by Matos to make it 33-7, the Nettes would go on an 11-0 run as Martin hit back to back threes, Ellie Hollis would make a layup, and Bella Hopkins would hit a three to stretch the lead to 44-7. The two teams would trade baskets for the rest of the first half as they went into halftime with the Nettes leading, 49-12.

 

The third quarter saw the Nettes go on a 13-0 run throughout the entire quarter as Reagan Ludington started it off with back to back threes. Brylee Deering, would add 5 more points to her total in the quarter as she made two layups and a free throw. Mullins, would make a layup during the run to push the Nettes lead out to 62-12 going to the fourth.

 

It was more of the same in the fourth quarter as the Nettes would go on a 12-0 run throughout the frame. Bree Jewell, would make three threes in the fourth while Martin would make her fourth of the game during the shortened fourth quarter. The Nettes, would come away with a 74-12 win.

With the win, the Nettes have earned a spot in the AAA State Tournament. They have also advanced to the 7-AAA Region Tournament Semifinals where they will take on the Dawson Lady Tigers at Lumpkin on Thursday, February 15th. Tip off is scheduled for 4 pm.

Nettes road trip begins with tough loss at Dawson

Dawsonville, Ga — The Pickens Dragonettes began a four game road trip in region play on Friday, January 26th as they traveled to Dawsonville to take on the Dawson Lady Tigers. Coming into the game, the Nettes were 19-1, 6-1 in 7-AAA, and ranked 3rd in 3A. The Lady Tigers, came into the game 12-8, 5-3 in 7-AAA, and ranked 7th in 3A. The Lady Tigers, were able to earn an in season split as they picked up the win, 53-46.

 

The ball game began with Ellison Steinhauer putting the Nettes on top with a three pointer. The Lady Tigers, responded with a 9-0 run as Kindra Coker, and Abby Samples-Slaton contrubuted to the run to make it 9-3. Steinhauer, ended the run with her second three pointer of the quarter to cut the lead to 3. Caroline Mullins, would then make a pair of free throws to cut the lead down to 9-8.

A 7-0 combined run by Eva Bishop and Ava Roberson, stretched the Lady Tiger lead to 16-8. A basket by Steinhauer put a stop to the second Lady Tiger run as they would head to the second quarter with Dawson leading, 16-10.

 

The second quarter started with Steinhauer splitting a pair of free throws and Mullins hitting a shot to make it 16-13. The Lady Tigers would then go on a 5-0 run as Coker made a basket and a pair of free throws. Morgan Chester got in on the action with a bucket to make it 21-13. Mullins, would then cut the lead down to 4 after making four straight free throws. Slaton, Steinhauer, and Maddie Siuta would trade baskets to end the first half as the Lady Tigers led it, 27-21.

 

The third quarter began with both teams trading buckets as the Lady Tigers continued to lead it, 33-25. The Nettes, would cut it to 5 after Bella Hopkins split a pair of free throws and Mullins connected on a shot to make it 33-28. back to back three pointers from Siuta and Slaton stretched the lead to 39-28. A three by Steinhauer cut it back down to single digits. Mullins would follow with a lay in to cut the lead back to 6.

Bishop, got a layup to go to make it an 8 point game. A pair of free throw makes by Hopkins would again cut the lead to 41-35 as they would head to the fourth quarter.

 

Mullins, started the fourth quarter with a bucket to make it 41-37. After several fouls, Bishop would make two straight trips to the free throw line. She connected on all four shots to make it 45-37. Hopkins, then split a pair of free throws to make it 45-38. Siuta, would hit a three to make it a 10 point game. After a lay up by Hopkins, Bishop, answered with her own lay up to make it 50-40. Mullins and Slaton would then trade baskets as that made it 52-42.

The Nettes, would cut the lead down to 6 as both Mullins and Steinhauer made a pair of free throws to make it 52-46. A free throw make by Siuta would help seal the win for the Lady Tigers, 53-46.

The Nettes, will be back on the road for the second game of their four game road trip as they take on the Lumpkin County Lady Indians on Tuesday, January 30th. The Nettes, defeated the Lady Indians back on December 15th and will look to stay in 2nd place in 7-AAA. Tip off is set for 6 pm.

Nettes honor ’73-’74 team; defeat Lady Cats

Jasper, Ga — In front of a packed out Dragons Den, the #3 ranked team in 3A, the Pickens Dragonettes, took on their rivals from up the road, the Gilmer Lady Cats, on Friday, January 19th. Coming into the game, the Nettes were 18-1, and 5-1 in 7-AAA play. The Lady Cats came into the game with a 7-9 record and 2-4 in 7-AAA play. The Nettes, would jump out to an early lead and never look back as they picked up a 54-20 win to earn the in-season sweep.

Prior to the game beginning, Pickens High School and the Nettes, honored the 1973-74 State Championship team as players and court namesake coach Roy Cowart were introduced to the crowd, and presented with the state championship banner. A new banner was then unveiled to the crowd to be displayed in the gym.

 

A pair of Nettes seniors, Bella Hopkins and Caroline Mullins, began the game combining to go on a 10-0 run to give Pickens a 10-0 lead. After a bucket by Aliza Chastain ended the Nettes run, Mullins and freshman Reagan Ludington closed out the first quarter going on a 4-0 run to make it 14-2 Nettes going to the second quarter.

 

The run by the Nettes kept going as the second quarter started as Hopkins, Ellison Steinhauer, and Mullins contributed to what was a 14-0 run in total to make it 24-2. A basket by Bree Burnette, put an end to that Nettes run. Pickens, would then go on a 9-0 run as Ludington hit a three, Mullins made a pair of free throws, and Ellison Steinhauer made back to back layups to make it 33-4. A buzzer beating three pointer from near half court by Chelsey Griggs would close out the first half as the Nettes led it, 33-7.

 

The second half began with Madison Bradshaw getting on the board for the Lady Cats as that made it 33-9. The Nettes, would then go on an 8-0 run as Mullins, Brylee Deering, and Ellison Steinhauer all scored during the run to make it 41-9. A three pointer from Sophia Riblet would end that Nettes run and make it 41-12. After a bucket by Hopkins, and a pair of free throws by Mullins, Grace Bramlett would hit a three to make it 45-15. A layup by Mullins would close out the third quarter as they went to the fourth with the Nettes ahead, 47-15.

 

That layup to end the third quarter sparked what would be a 9-0 run as the fourth quarter got started as Ashaela Buchanan hit a three, and Hopkins made back to back layups to make it 54-15. The Lady Cats, would end the ball game on a 5-0 run as Riblet would connect on another three pointer, and Chastain would make a layup. The Nettes, took this one, 54-20.

The Nettes, will now have a week to get ready as they begin a four game region road trip on Friday, January 26th as they head up to Dawsonville to take on the Dawson Lady Tigers. Pickens, defeated the Lady Tigers in Jasper back on December 12th. Tip off is set to begin at 7 pm.

Nettes move to 8-0 in battle of top 5 teams

Jasper, Ga — It was a battle of top 5 teams in 3A on Tuesday, December 12th as the Pickens Dragonettes hosted the Dawson Lady Tigers in a big time 7-AAA match up. The Nettes, came into the game 7-0, 1-0 in 7-AAA, and #4 in 3A. The Lady Tigers, came into the game 6-2, 2-0 in 7-AAA, and #5 in 3A. Prior to the game, the Nettes recognized Caroline Mullins on surpassing 1,000 career points on November 28th against Fannin. The Nettes, used an intense defensive effort and had several players step up as they defeated the Lady Tigers, 68-41.

 

The first quarter started out slow for both teams. Things eventually got going and it was back and forth for the majority of the quarter. The Nettes, pulled away just a bit as they would hold a 17-10 lead going to the second quarter. Mullins, Ellison Steinhauer, Brylee Deering, and Reagan Ludington all scored for the Nettes. Maddie Siuta, Kindra Coker, and Eva Bishop got in the score book for the Lady Tigers in the first quarter.

 

In the second quarter, the Nettes extended their lead outscoring the Lady Tigers 14-9 in the frame. Deering, led the scoring in the quarter with 7 points. Ludington and Emery Steinhauer followed with 3, Ellison Steinhauer had 2, and Mullins made two free throws. Bishop led Dawson with 3 points off of three free throws, Coker, Abby Slaton, and Anna Ayers all had 2 points. At the half, the Nettes led 31-19.

 

The third quarter, was the closest quarter of the game as the Nettes just outscored the Lady Tigers 11-10. Ayers, led the way in the quarter with 6 points. Ellison and Emery Steinhauer led the way for the Nettes with 5 points and 3 points respectively. Bella Hopkins scored 2 points and Deering made a free throw for the Nettes. Bishop and Ava Roberson scored 2 for the Lady Tigers. Going to the fourth, the Nettes led, 42-29.

 

In the fourth quarter, the Nettes exploded offensively. Led by what had been a fierce defense throughout the game, the Nettes poured in 26 points in the fourth to help secure the win. Ellison Steinhauer led the way in the fourth with 9 points. Mullins with 6, Hopkins, Ludington, and Emery Steinhauer all with 3 points. Deering chipped in 2 points.

For the Lady Tigers, Coker led the way with 3 points, Ayers, Bishop, Morgan Chester, and Siuta all had 2 points. Ramsey Smith split a pair of free throws. Final from Jasper, Nettes 68 Lady Tigers 41.

Nettes defeat Lady Spartans, will face Dawson on Monday in region tournament

Oakwood, Ga — It was the final night of the regular season as the Pickens Dragonettes traveled down to Oakwood, Ga to take on the West Hall Lady Spartans on Friday, February 10th. The Nettes, defeated the Lady Spartans in Jasper on January 17th, and looked to complete the season sweep ahead of next week’s region tournament. In a great game by everyone involved, Pickens picked up a 61-8 win over West Hall.

 

The Nettes, started the game on fire going on a massive run. It began early on in the first quarter with a quick basket. Freshman Ellison Steinhauer, stole the ball, took it all the way down the court, made the layup, got fouled, and coverted the and-1 to make it 5-0. Pickens, would then force a shot clock violation on the Lady Spartans. Caroline Mullins would find Emma Gleason underneath the basket for the lay in to make it 7-0.

The scoring continued for the Nettes as Ashaela Buchanan and Ellison Steinhauer hit back to back three pointers to make it 13-0. In the last remaining seconds of the first quarter, Emery Steinhauer grabbed the ball after a block by Mullins and raced down the court and laid the ball in just before the buzzer to make it 15-0 Nettes going to the second.

 

To open up the second quarter, Ellison Steinhauer got possession of the ball after a wide pass by West Hall and found a streaking Brylee Deering for the layup to make it 17-0. Steinhauer, Ellison that is, then got another steal and took it coast to coast for the bucket to make it 19-0. After a block by Bella Hopkins, Pickens was able to save the ball and Hopkins took it all the way for the lay in.

Hopkins then stole the in-bounds pass and got fouled. She would make both free throws to make it 23-0. Mullins, got in the score book as she received the in-bounds pass from Emery Steinhauer and got the short shot to fall to make it 25-0. Buchanan, then made back to back three pointers to make it 31-0. Mullins, was able to drive into the lane and make the layup with contact. She would complete the and-1 to make it 34-0. Emery Steinhauer, hit a three pointer to make it 37-0 as they hit halftime.

 

Bella Hopkins, got the second half started with a pair of free throws to make it 39-0. The Lady Spartans would then finally break their drought and get on the board with a three pointer to make it 39-3. The Nettes, then went on an 8-0 run as they got baskets from Ellison Steinhauer, Mullins, and Emmie Moore. Hopkins also made a pair of free throws during the run to make it 47-3.

West Hall, ended the run with a free throw line jumper to make it 47-3. Deering, split a pair of free throws and Ellison Steinhauer would make both of hers as the Nettes took a 50-5 lead into the fourth quarter.

 

In a shortened fourth quarter, Pickens got the scoring started as Mullins found a cutting Gleason for the lay up to make it 52-5. That would turn into a 6-0 run as Hopkins and Deering both got layups after steals to make it 56-5. The Lady Spartans ended the run as they made a contested shot and got the free throw to go to make it 56-8. The Nettes would close the game on a 5-0 run as Moore found Emery Steinhauer for a three pointer, and Deering got another layup to go after another steal. The final score in this one, 61-8.

The Nettes, will now turn their attention to the 7-AAA Region Tournament that starts on Monday, February 13th. Pickens, as seen above, will be the #4 seed in the tournament and take on the #5 seeded Dawson Lady Tigers. The Nettes swept the Lady Tigers during the regular season winning 62-46 on December 13th in Dawsonville and 46-37 on January 26th in Jasper. Tip off for this third meeting is set for 4:30 pm on Monday. The game will be played at Wesleyan.

Nettes earn sweep of Lady Tigers after defensive battle

Jasper, Ga — The Pickens Dragonettes, followed up a tough week with a really good week having beaten West Hall on Senior Night on Tuesday, January 17th, and sweeping the season series against Gilmer in Ellijay on Friday, January 20th. On Thursday, January 26th, the Nettes welcomed the Dawson Lady Tigers to Roy Cowart Court. In a very hard fought game, Pickens came away with a big region win over Dawson, 46-37.

 

The Nettes got the scoring started in the first quarter with a pair of free throws from Emma Gleason to make it 2-0. After a bit of back and forth from both teams, the Lady Tigers grabbed their first lead of the game with a three pointer by Kindra Coker and a layup by Morgan Chester to make it 5-2. Madison Powell got the first points of the game from the field for Pickens as she tied the game up with a three. Caroline Mullins, then split a pair of free throws to give the Nettes a 6-5 lead.

Dawson, then went on a 4-0 run as Chester and Morgan Burt made back to back layups to make it 9-6 Lady Tigers. Ellison Steinhauer, split a pair of free throws to make it 9-7. Dawson, then went on another run as Kirklyn Porter made a pair of free throws, and the Eva Bishop made back to back shots to make it 15-7. A bucket by Mullins would make it 15-9 Lady Tigers going to the second quarter.

The second quarter, belonged to the Nettes. The quarter started off with a 4-0 run by Ellison Steinhauer to cut the Dawson lead down to 15-13. The Lady Tigers got two points back with a pair of free throws by Anna Ayers to make it 17-13. That would be the only points Dawson would score in the quarter as Pickens held them scoreless from the field during the frame. After the free throws, the Nettes went on a 10-0 run getting back to back layups from Gleason, a free throw make from Steinhauer, a three pointer and layup from Mullins to make it 23-17 Pickens going into the half.

Chester opened the scoring in the second half as she made a layup to cut the Nettes lead to 23-19. Pickens, responded with a 6-0 run as Mullins, Emory Bryant, and Bella Hopkins each made baskets to extend the Nettes lead out to 29-19. Chester, ended the run with another layup to make it 29-21 Pickens as we’d head to the fourth quarter with the Nettes up by that same score.

To begin the fourth quarter, both teams traded buckets as Bishop scored for Dawson, Bryant scored for the Nettes, than Chester scored for the Lady Tigers making it 31-25 Pickens. As the quarter went on, both teams kept answering each other as they traded baskets. The Nettes, kept the lead at a distance and were able to pull out a 46-37 win over Dawson to get the in season sweep.

The Nettes, will be back in action on Saturday, January 28th as they host the East Jackson Eagles in non-region action. It’ll be a special game as the game is being played at the Pickens Junior High gym Tip off is set for 3 pm.

2nd half rally leads Nettes to victory over Dawson

Dawsonville, Ga — The Pickens Dragonettes, have had an interesting week to say the least. On Tuesday, they traveled to Rossville to take on the Ridgeland Lady Panthers in 7-AAAA action. The Nettes, set a school record for three point makes in a game on route to a 92-23 win. On Friday, the Nettes were set to travel to Tunnel Hill to take on the Lady Bruins of Northwest Whitfield, but the game had to be postponed due to covid issues. On Saturday, the Nettes traveled to Dawsonville for an early afternoon tilt with a good Dawson Lady Tiger team in non-region action.

 

In the first quarter, both offenses found scoring early as the three pointers were flying early and often. The Nettes also found success scoring inside as well. After a back and forth first period, the Lady Tigers took a 19-16 lead into the second.

In the second quarter, the Lady Tigers started to pull away a bit using the three point shot and second chance opportunities. Going into the halftime break, Dawson led Pickens by 13.

The third quarter started with the Lady Tigers adding to their lead slightly to make it a 17 point advantage. Then, the shift happened. The Nettes started to knock down shots and pile up defensive stops. The next thing you know, Dawson only held a two point lead going to the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, the Nettes used the momentum built in the third quarter and carried it over into the fourth as they stormed back from a double digit second half deficit, to pick up a big road win, 69-62.

 

With the win, Pickens moves to 14-3 on the season. The Nettes, will be back on the road Tuesday evening as they take on the North Murray Lady Mountaineers in another non-region contest. Tip off set for 6 pm.
