‘Nettes Tip Off 2017-18 Season With Road Win Over Chestatee

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Gainesville to take on the Lady War Eagles of Chestatee High School in the opening game of the 2017-18 season. Not only was it the first game of a new season, it was the first game for new ‘Nettes head coach Brandon Thomas, who made his return to PHS after several years as the head coach of the Winder-Barrow Lady Bulldogs.

 

These two teams went back and forth all evening and it started in the first quarter. The ‘Nettes were able to get out to a 13-7 lead over the Lady War Eagles after picking it up late in the quarter. In the 2nd, Both teams used defense to lead to success offensively. Chestatee would outscore Pickens in the 2nd, 15-14, but the ‘Nettes still held the advantage at the half, 27-22.

 

The 3rd quarter saw the action continue on where it left off in the 2nd. The Lady War Eagles used a 16-12 3rd quarter run to cut the Pickens lead to 39-38 going to the 4th and final period. In the 4th, with the help of a 15-11 run, clutch free throws, & a late technical, the ‘Nettes were able to hold onto the lead, & the win taking this one, 54-49.

The ‘Nettes will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they head to Ellijay for the annual Thanksgiving Tip-Off Tournament featuring Pickens, Gilmer, Fannin, & Hiwassee Dam. Pickens, will be taking on the host team, the Gilmer Lady Cats on Saturday at 3 pm.

Nettes’ Season Comes To An End Have Eyes On The Future

Yesterday, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Southeast Whitfield for the 7-AAAA Region Tournament, looking for a 2nd straight state tournament appearance. To do that, they had to get past the #4 seed, and host school, Southeast Whitfield. These two teams split during the regular season. The rubber match, would be the most important one.

 

In the opening quarter, things were back and forth for the majority of the frame. Southeast Whitfield took the upper hand going to the 2nd, 13-8. The Nettes’ came back in the 2nd quarter, keeping this one close. Pickens outscored the Lady Raiders 10-9, to cut the Southeast Whitfield lead to 22-18 going into the break.

 

In the 3rd, the Nettes’ looked to again chip away at the lead. The Lady Raiders again pulled away towards the end of the quarter, taking a 40-29 advantage to the 4th. In the 4th, while Pickens fought hard, Southeast Whitfield grew the lead and got the win, 64-42, ending the Nettes’ season.

While their season may have ended in tough fashion, there is a lot to be excited about with this Nettes’ team. Every girl that was on the varsity team this season will be back, not to mention the up and coming young ladies on the JV & 9th grade teams. The future is definitely bright for the Pickens Dragonettes.

Nettes’ Defeat LaFayette One Win From State Tournament

Last night, PHS Dragonettes’ varsity basketball team traveled to Southeast Whitfield to take part in the opening round of the 7-AAAA Region Tournament. Pickens, came into the ball game as the #5 seed and needed two wins if they wanted to make it to state. First, they had to get past LaFayette.

 

In the 1st quarter, the Nettes’ got off to a quick start. The Lady Ramblers got back into things by the end of the frame as Pickens held a 13-6 advantage going into the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, both teams were pretty much evenly matched. The Nettes’, outscored LaFayette 9-8, to take a 22-14 lead into the break.

 

Starting with the 3rd, the 2nd half belonged to Pickens. The Nettes’ used a 20-5 quarter run to break their lead wide open, 42-19 going to the 4th. Pickens used a 17-11 run in the 4th to close things out and advance, 59-30.

The Nettes’ will now prepare for their third match up of the season with the Region Tournament host team, the Southeast Whitfield Lady Raiders. The two teams split their regular season meetings but this match up, is the most important one as the winner advances to the state tournament. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m. tomorrow.

Nettes’ Fall To Gilmer Will Face LaFayette On Monday

Yesterday, the PHS Dragonettes’ varsity basketball team hosted the Gilmer Lady Cats in a make up game that was postponed due to a power outage. The two teams had already played the first half prior to the outage, and we set to play the 2nd half with the Nettes’ ahead, 28-24.

 

In the 3rd, both teams went back and forth as it was as intense as a rivalry game should be. Pickens and the Lady Cats each poured in 17 points a piece, and the Nettes’ still held the advantage going to the 4th, 45-41.

 

In the 4th and final quarter, Gilmer seized control. The Lady Cats used a 19-8 run and hit late free throws to take this one, 60-53. With the win, the Gilmer Lady Cats sealed up the #3 seed in next week’s region tournament.

The loss didn’t have any effect on the Nettes’ in the standings as they had already locked up the #5 seed in the upcoming region tournament. Their opponent will be the #8 seeded Lady Ramblers of LaFayette. The match up will take place at Southeast Whitfield and will be on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Nettes’ Sweep Ridgeland To Virtually Lock Up The 5th Seed

Earlier this evening, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Ridgeland Lady Panthers in a 7-AAAA region ball game. Coming into the game, Pickens were firmly in the 5th spot in the standings and looked to make that grip even tighter as they looked to get a repeat of their win in Rossville in early January and send the celebrating seniors and fans decked out in pink home happy.

 

In the 1st quarter, both teams came out slow on the offensive side of the ball. The scoring started quickly however as the Lady Panthers took a 13-9 lead into the 2nd. In the 2nd, the Nettes’ got things cranking. They outscored Ridgeland 17-12 to take a slim 26-25 lead going into the half.

 

As the 3rd quarter began, Pickens looked to add on to their lead. With the help of a 16-11 run, add on to their lead is exactly what they did as the Nettes’ took a 42-36 lead into the 4th. Holding a two possession lead going into the 4th and final quarter of play, Pickens sealed things with a 20-10 quarter run to come away with a 62-46 victory. The victory gives the Nettes’ a 7-6 record in region play and likely a 5th place region tournament seeding.

The Nettes’ will have one more game before getting ready for the region tournament. Pickens will host the Gilmer Lady Cats on Thursday in a make up game originally planned for December. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Nettes’ Fall To Lady Cats; Prepare For Regular Season’s Final Week

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the trek up 515 to take on their rival, the Gilmer Lady Cats. This game was the first of two make up games these teams have due to a power outage, and the snow storm.

 

In the first quarter, both teams tried to find a groove on offense. The Lady Cats were able to get something going as they took a 12-6 lead going into the 2nd. In the 2nd, Gilmer stretched their lead out to double digits. Using a 15-7 quarter run, the Lady Cats went into the break, up 27-13.

 

In the 3rd, the Nettes’ were in comeback mode as they made a little run in the quarter. Pickens outscored Gilmer 14-11, to make it 38-27. In the 4th, the Nettes’ tried everything they could to get back into the it using the inside game to draw fouls on the Lady Cat players, cutting the lead to 7 at one point. It would not be enough however as Gilmer was able to hit key shots down the stretch to take this one, 50-41.

The Nettes’ now will turn their focus on the final week of the regular season in hopes of moving up from the 5th spot in the standings prior to the region tournament. Pickens will host the Lady Panthers of Ridgeland on Tuesday for Senior Night in the Dragons Den. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Nettes’ Split With Lady Raiders Ready For 515 Rivalry

On Friday night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Dalton to take on the Lady Raiders of Southeast Whitfield in a big time region match up. Coming into the ball game, both teams found themselves tied for fourth in 7-AAAA. Pickens, came in, looking for the season sweep.

 

The first quarter, would turn out to be the deciding quarter in this one. Southeast Whitfield got out to a 23-7 lead over the Nettes’ going to the 2nd. The quarter totals in the 2nd were much closer as both teams went back and forth. The Lady Raiders still held the lead going to the half, 40-21.

 

In the 3rd, Southeast Whitfield doubled up the Nettes’ quarter total 16-8. Stretching their lead to 56-29, going to the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, Pickens had their best quarter as they outscored the Lady Raiders, 18-14. Southeast Whitfield however got the win and the split with a 70-45 final.

Nettes’ Fall To Lady Bruins Prepare For Weekend On The Road

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Lady Bruins of Northwest Whitfield. Pickens, came into the game 3rd in the region while the Lady Bruins came in tied for 1st with Heritage, and ranked 10th in the 4A poll.

 

The first quarter started out back and forth with both teams feeling one another out. Northwest Whitfield took the lead by the end of the quarter 22-8. The Lady Bruins added to their lead in the 2nd quarter by using a 13-6 run. Northwest Whitfield found themselves ahead at the half, 35-14.

 

In the 3rd, the Lady Bruins used a 21-10 quarter run. They led the way going to the 4th, 56-24. In the 4th, both teams scored 7 points each. Northwest Whitfield took this one, 63-31.

Nettes’ Fall To Lady Generals Prepare For Rivalry Game

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Lady Generals of Heritage in a match up of two of the top 3 teams in the region. Pickens, came into the ball game winners of 5 straight games and 4 straight region games.

 

The 1st quarter got off to a a fast start for the Nettes’. Pickens raced out to a 24-16 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, Heritage got back in it using a 13-6 quarter run. The Nettes’ still held the slight lead over the Lady Generals 30-29 heading to the break.

 

The 3rd quarter saw both defenses for each team play shut down basketball. A total of 11 points were scored between the two teams as Pickens outscored Heritage 7-4 to take a 37-33 lead into the 4th. In the 4th, the Lady Generals offense exploded and were able to take the lead from the Nettes’. A 28-10 quarter run helped Heritage get a 61-47 win, ending the Nettes’ 5 game win streak.

Nettes’ Blow Past Lady Canes For 5th Straight Win

This past Friday evening, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to take on the Lady Canes of Cartersville in 7-AAAA action. The Nettes’, came in riding a 4 game win streak with 3 of those 4 wins coming in region play.

 

In the first quarter, things went back and forth. Pickens came away with the first quarter lead, 12-9. Again in the 2nd, the ball game was tightly contested. The Nettes’ outscored the Lady Canes 13-8 to stretch their lead to 25-17 going into the half.

 

In the third, Pickens began to pull away. The Nettes’ used a 23-8 quarter run to grab a 48-25 lead going to the fourth. Cartersville outscored the Nettes’ 15-14 in the 4th, but that would not be enough. Pickens came away with a 62-40 win for their 5th straight. With the win, Pickens has now evened up their overall record at 9-9 and improved their region record to 6-2.

Nettes’ Sweep LaFayette For Fourth Straight

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to take on the LaFayette Lady Ramblers in 7-AAAA action. Pickens, came into the game winners of three straight and looking to keep up their winning ways in the new year.

 

In the first quarter, the Nettes’ had everything working. Pickens took a 23-5 lead going into the 2nd quarter. In the 2nd, it was LaFayette’s turn to get hot. The Lady Ramblers hit three after three to get back into the game in the frame. LaFayette would go on to outscore the Nettes’ 24-15, but Pickens still held a 38-29 lead going to the break.

 

In the 3rd, the Nettes’ used offense & defense to stretch out their lead. Pickens outscored the Lady Ramblers 15-5 in the quarter to take a 53-34 lead into the 4th. The Nettes’ closed things out in the 4th and picked up the win, 57-37. Their 4th straight.

Nettes’ Tame Lady Lions For Third Straight Win

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Lady Lions of Christian Heritage in a non-region ball game. Last month, Christian Heritage came away with a 39-34 victory at home. The Nettes’ looked to return the favor last night.

 

In the first quarter, both teams found early success as it was a closely contested frame. Pickens held a 14-11 lead heading into the 2nd. In the 2nd, the Nettes’ looked to add to their lead and that’s what they did. Using a 16-6 quarter run, Pickens stretched their lead over the Lady Lions to 30-17 heading into halftime.

 

The third, saw close action much like the beginning of the game. The Nettes’ outscored Christian Heritage 12-8 in the the frame to take a lead of 42-25 going to the 4th. Pickens closed things out and walked away with a 48-29 win.

Nettes’ Earn 2nd Straight Region Win

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Rossville, Ga to take on the Lady Panthers of Ridgeland in a big 7-AAAA region game. The game would be played at Rossville Middle School due to the Wrestling Area Region Tournament being held at Ridgeland High School.

 

The 1st quarter saw back and forth action between both teams. The Nettes’ took a 13-10 lead heading into the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, both schools looked evenly matched. We went into the half, tied at 24 a piece.

 

In the 3rd, the Lady Panthers took the lead for the first time. Ridgeland outscored the Nettes’ 17-13 in the frame to take a 41-37 lead going to the 4th. In the 4th, Pickens battled back to regain the lead. With the help of an 18-9 quarter run, the Nettes’ secured the win, 55-49. For the 2nd straight game, four Nettes’ were in double figures.

Nettes’ Earn Region Win Over Lady Raiders

Tonight, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Lady Raiders of Southeast Whitfield in region play. Pickens, came into the ball game looking to improve to 3-2 in 7-AAAA play.

 

In the 1st, both teams traded buckets. The Lady Raiders took the early advantage heading to the 2nd, 13-9. In the 2nd quarter, Southeast Whitfield barely outscored the Nettes’ 13-12, to take a 26-21 lead into the break.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens used both offense and defense to get back into the game and to take the lead. The Nettes’ outscored the Lady Raiders 22-10 to take a 43-36 lead into the 4th. In the 4th, Pickens closed out the win by outscoring Southeast Whitfield 19-14 and hitting some key free throws. The Nettes’ won this one, 62-50. Pickens had 4 players in double figures in the win.

Nettes’ Close Out Pickens Holiday Classic Against Cherokee

On Wednesday, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Cherokee Lady Warriors in the third and final day of the Pickens Holiday Classic. After two tough losses, the Nettes’ looked to end the tournament on a good note, heading into region play next week.

 

The first quarter saw the young Nettes’ team stay with the 11-2 Lady Warriors. Cherokee held a slim 9-7 lead going to the 2nd quarter. Offensive struggles plagued Pickens in the 2nd quarter as the Lady Warriors went on a 19-4 run to take a 28-11 lead into the break.

 

In the 3rd, the offense for the Nettes’ picked up as they outscored Cherokee 17-16. However, the Lady Warriors still held the lead, 44-28, headed to the 4th. Cherokee went on an 11-0 quarter run in the 4th to get the win, 55-28.

This coming Tuesday, the Nettes’ will be back in action as they host the Lady Raiders of Southeast Whitfield in 7-AAAA play. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Nettes’ Lose Tough Game To River Ridge

Earlier this evening, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the River Ridge Lady Knights in day 2 of the Pickens Holiday Classic. Nettes’ looked to bounce back after dropping one last night to Creekview.

 

In the beginning of the 1st, both teams felt each other out. The Lady Knights took the lead after one, 16-9. In the 2nd quarter, River Ridge stretched their lead over the Nettes’ out to 32-18 after a 16-9 quarter run.

 

The 3rd quarter started off slowly. The Lady Knights outscored Pickens by 10, 17-7 in the 3rd to take a 49-25 lead heading to the 4th. The 4th was the closest quarter since the 1st in terms of scoring. River Ridge barely outscored the Nettes’ 12-7 in the frame to seal a 61-32 win.

 

Leading the way for the Nettes’ were:

Torie Williams: 10 points, & 6 rebounds

Mackenzie Hampton: 6 points, 2 assists, & 5 rebounds

Shelby Cook: 5 points, & 5 rebounds

Ashley Nelson: 5 points, 1 assist, & 1 rebound

Madison McClure finished with 4 points, 1 assist, & 3 steals, & Autumn Young had 2 points, 2 assists, & 2 rebounds.

The Nettes’ will finish up the Pickens Holiday Classic tomorrow as they host the Cherokee Lady Warriors. Tip off scheduled for 6 p.m. in gthe new gym.
