‘Nettes To Face Rival Lady Cats For 3rd Seed Heading Into State Tournament

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team were back in Dalton to take part in the 2017 6-AAAA Region Tournament Semi-finals. Their opponent, the top seeded, & 4-A top ten ranked Lady Bruins of Northwest Whitfield. The winner, not only would advance to the championship game, but would also ensure a home game in the state tournament.

 

In the 1st, It took a bit for both teams to get anything consistent. In a back and forth opening quarter, the Lady Bruins held a 12-7 over the ‘Nettes going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, Pickens stayed within striking distance of top seeded Northwest Whitfield. A 14-8 quarter advantage gave the Lady Bruins a 26-15 lead going to the half.

 

The 3rd quarter, was relatively low scoring as both teams combined for 17 total points. An 11-6 quarter advantage game Northwest Whitfield a 37-21 lead over Pickens going to the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, the Lady Bruins used a 16-12 quarter run to get the win over the ‘Nettes, 53-33.

Later today, the ‘Nettes will be back in Dalton to take on their bitter rial, the Gilmer Lady Cats, in the 3rd place game of the 6-AAAA Region Tournament. The winner, will be the 3rd seed for region 6 when they take on region 8 in the 1st round of the 4-A State Tournament. Tip off is scheduled for 4 p.m.

‘Nettes Earn Hard Fought Win Over Ridgeland, Host LaFayette Today

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Ridgeland Lady Panthers for a big 6-AAAA region match up inside the Dragons Den. Coming into the game, Ridgeland was a game ahead of the ‘Nettes for 4th in the region standings, & with a win, Pickens would tie things up in the standings.

 

In the 1st, both the ‘Nettes & Lady Panthers took turns scoring. The back and forth opening frame ended with Pickens in front, 10-9. In the 2nd, Ridgeland made a run to pull ahead. Using a 13-10 run, the Lady Panthers went into the half with a 22-20 lead over the ‘Nettes.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens used a run of their own to reclaim the lead back. A 17-12 3rd quarter advantage gave the ‘Nettes a 37-34 lead over Ridgeland going to the 4th and final quarter. The 4th, was a tightly contested end to a really close game all the way through. Using a 12-8 run, & timely free throws, Pickens came away with the win over the Lady Panthers, 49-42.

‘Nettes Get Exciting Win On Senior Night, Will Be Fourth Seed In Region Tourny

Yesterday evening, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Lady Raiders from Southeast Whitfield in the final game of the regular season & also Senior Night. With a win, Pickens, would seal up the 4th seed heading into next week’s 6-AAAA region tournament. Prior to the game, ‘Nettes head coach Donna Enis was recognized for getting her 400th win as a coach.

The 1st quarter, was a back and forth frame as both teams looked to maintain an early lead. The Lady Raiders ended up with the lead heading into the 2nd, 16-14. In the 2nd, Southeast Whitfield stretched their lead out just a little bit. A 16-11 quarter run gave the Lady Raiders a 33-25 lead over Pickens going into the half.

 

In the 3rd, the ‘Nettes started a big time run. After being down double digits for a time in the quarter, Pickens used 14-11 overall run, & a 6-0 run to end the frame including a buzzer beater from Madison McClure to cut the Southeast Whitfield lead to 44-39. In the 4th, the ‘Nettes took over. With help from an 18-7 quarter run and timely free throws, Pickens sent Seniors Tessa Duncan, McKenna Kemp, Madison McClure, Ashley Nelson, Taylor Wigington, & Autumn Young out with a win, 57-51.

‘Nettes Take 3rd In 6-AAAA After Defeating Rival Gilmer For 3rd Time This Season

Yesterday afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team was once again at Southeast Whitfield High School to take part in the final day of the 2017 6-AAAA Region Tournament. Pickens, faced a familiar foe yesterday as they took on the Lady Cats of Gilmer for the 4th time on the season for the #3 seed for 6-AAAA heading into the 4-A State Tournament next week.

 

In the 1st, Gilmer, got off to a quick start in the early tip time. The Lady Cats, pounced out to a 16-9 lead over the ‘Nettes going to the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, the offense and defense picked up for Pickens. The ‘Nettes, used a 19-10 quarter advantage to take a 28-26 lead over Gilmer going to the break.

 

In a very physical 3rd quarter, both teams found success scoring. Pickens barely outscored the Lady Cats 20-17, to take a 48-43 lead going to the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, the ‘Nettes used another huge run to close this game out. Using a big 24-10 quarter run, Pickens, got the win, their 3rd over Gilmer on the season, 72-53.

The ‘Nettes will now wait to see where they will be off to next week for the 1st round of the 4-A State Tournament. Region 6, is facing region 8 in the first round. In the 8-AAAA Championship, Jefferson is taking on North Oconee. The ‘Nettes, will travel to whoever loses that game next week.

Slow Start Hinders ‘Nettes Against 4A Num. 7 Heritage

Yesterday, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the trip up to Ringgold, to take on the 7th ranked team in 4-A according to sandysspiel.com, & region 6 foe, Heritage Lady Generals. Pickens, came in to last night’s game with a little momentum after defeating Sonoraville on Saturday to give Coach Enis her 400th career win & looked to even the season series against Heritage.

 

The 1st quarter, was not kind to the team in green last night. Heritage, got off to a 21-5 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, the ‘Nettes offense came alive. Pickens, outscored the Lady Generals 19-14 in the frame to cut the Heritage lead to 35-24 going into the break.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens cut into the lead even more, dropping it to single digits. The Lady Generals used a 24-18 quarter advantage to extend their lead to 59-42 going to the 4th. Heritage, closed out the 4th quarter with a 17-12 advantage to get the win over the ‘Nettes, 76-54.

‘Nettes Earn State Berth With Region Tournament Win Over Ridgeland

Yesterday afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes traveled to Southeast Whitfield to kickoff the 2017 6-AAAA Region Tournament Quarterfinals. The ‘Nettes, came in to the tournament as the #4 seed & took on the #5 seeded Lady Panthers of Ridgeland for the right to punch their ticket to the 4-A State Tournament.

 

Pickens, got off to a fast start in the opening quarter of this one. The ‘Nettes, raced out to a 17-6 lead going to the 2nd quarter. In the 2nd, the Lady Panthers got their offense to pick up. Pickens, outscored Ridgeland in the frame 15-11, to take a 32-17 lead into the break.

 

In the 3rd, the ‘Nettes stretched their lead out on the the Lady Panthers using a 14-9 quarter run. Heading to the 4th and final quarter, Pickens led Ridgeland, 46-26. In the 4th, the ‘Nettes were able to seal things up and earn a state tournament berth with a 62-41 victory.

‘Nettes Fall In Region Match Up With 4-A Num. 6 Bruins

Yesterday, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Tunnel Hill to take on the Lady Bruins of Northwest Whitfield in a big region match up. Pickens, came into the ball game on a 3 game win streak and 4th in the region standings. Northwest Whitfield, came in undefeated in region play, & ranked 6th in the 4-A poll by www.sandysspiel.com.

 

In the 1st, the ‘Nettes stayed with the high powered Lady Bruins matching them score for score. Northwest Whitfield would take a 16-11 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, it was more of the back and forth action between the two teams. A late run, & a 13-10 quarter run for the Lady Bruins gave them a 29-21 lead over the ‘Nettes as we hit the half.

 

Early on in the 3rd, Pickens went on a 5-0 run to cut the Northwest Whitfield lead down to three. The Lady Bruins however, answered with a 23-4 run the rest of the way in the 3rd to stretch out their lead on the ‘Nettes, 52-30, going to the 4th. In the 4th, Northwest Whitfield closed things out to get the win, 71-42.

Coach Donna Enis Gets Win 400 As ‘Nettes Sweep Sonoraville

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Calhoun to take on the Sonoraville Lady Phoenix in non region action. These two teams met earlier this season with Pickens coming away with the narrow victory.

 

In the 1st, both teams jockeyed for the lead trading bucket after bucket. Going to the 2nd, it would be the ‘Nettes who had a 13-10 lead. In the 2nd, it was again tightly contested as Pickens held a slight 10-9 quarter advantage over the Lady Phoenix to head into the break, up 23-19.

 

Much like the 1st half, the 3rd quarter again was neck in neck. Pickens, maintained it’s lead over Sonoraville with a 14-13 3rd quarter run to lead it 37-32 going to the 4th. In the 4th, the ‘Nettes pulled away from the Lady Phoenix. Pickens used a 17-5 quarter run to close out the win, 54-37. That win, would give Dragonettes head coach Donna Enis her 400th for her career.

Yesterday afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Adairsville Lady Tigers inside the Dragons Den for non region action, coming off of a big win against their rival Gilmer, Pickens looked to continue building momentum heading into a busy week next week.

 

In the 1st, it took a bit for both teams to get going with the early tip. The ‘Nettes were able to take a 10-7 lead going to the 2nd. In that 2nd quarter, the offense for both schools found success more often. Pickens, used an 18-16 quarter advantage to take a 28-23 lead into the half.

 

In the 3rd, The Lady Tigers made a run getting back into the game. Adairsville used an 18-17 quarter run to cut the ‘Nettes lead to 45-41 going to the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, a total of 48 points were scored between the two teams. Pickens used a 28-21 quarter run, and hit free throws to get the win, 72-62.

‘Nettes Get Region Win Over Lady Cats In Ellijay

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Ellijay to take on their rival Lady Cats of Gilmer in a big region match up. This was the final meeting between the two schools during the regular season and it had big time implications.

 

In the 1st, as usual, both teams were very evenly matched. Both Pickens & Gilmer got things going offensively as the ‘Nettes came away with an 18-17 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, Pickens stretched out their lead over the Lady Cats ever so slightly. A 14-9 quarter run for the ‘Nettes, gave them a 32-26 lead over Gilmer going into the half.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens would again increase the lead by using a 14-8 quarter run. Going to the 4th and final quarter, the ‘Nettes led the Lady Cats, 46-34. In the 4th, Pickens held off a couple mini comeback attempts by Gilmer to get the much needed region win, 55-43.

‘Nettes Fall In Region Game Against Southeast Whitfield

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Dalton to take on the Lady Raiders of Southeast Whitfield in a 6-AAAA region battle. This game, was originally scheduled for tonight, but with the weather uncertain for the weekend, it was bumped up to last night.

 

In the 1st, the Lady Raiders got off to a hot start, leading early on 20-5. The ‘Nettes would begin a big time comeback towards the end of the 1st to cut the Southeast Whitfield lead to 20-12 going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, Pickens stayed hot. Going back to the 1st, the ‘Nettes went on a 21-6 run to tie things up at 26 in the 2nd. The Lady Raiders went on a 5-0 run to end the 2nd and took a 31-26 lead into the break.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens made yet another big run. They outscored Southeast Whitfield 21-15 in the frame to take a 47-46 lead going to the 4th. In the 4th, both teams went back and forth with the lead. The Lady Raiders were able to use an 18-13 quarter run, and late free throws to get the win, 64-60.

‘Nettes Open 2017 Up With Win Over Sonoraville

Yesterday evening, the PHS ‘Nettes varsity basketball team kicked off the 2017 portion of this years schedule against the Lady Phoenix of Sonoraville inside the Dragons Den. After a tough game against 7-A Roswell in the Fannin Mountian Top Holiday Classic championship last Friday, Pickens looked to get back on track before heading into region play.

 

In the 1st, both squads were going back and forth getting bucket after bucket. We would go to 2nd, tied at 13 a piece. In the 2nd the ‘Nettes would take control of the lead. Pickens, used a 19-11 quarter run to take a 32-24 lead into the half.

 

In the 3rd, both teams again would trade buckets as the offense got going for both sides. The ‘Nettes held a 16-15 advantage in scoring for the quarter to take a 48-39 lead into the 4th. The 4th quarter was a really exciting one as the Lady Phoenix made a big comeback attempt outscoring Pickens 18-14. The ‘Nettes hung on however hitting late free throws to sealthe win, 62-58.

‘Nettes Fall In Close One With Top Ten Lady Generals

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Lady Generals of Heritage in a tough 6-AAAA match up. Pickens, were looking to bounce back after a tough loss last Friday to the Lady Bruins of Northwest Whitfield. Heritage, came in ranked in the top ten of the 4A poll just like the Lady Bruins and were 8-0, 3-0 in the region coming into last night.

 

In the 1st, the 2nd unit for the ‘Nettes acted like a spark plug. The ‘Nettes caught fire early to jump out to a 19-10 lead over the Lady Generals. In the 2nd, Heritage used a 16-8 quarter run to get back into it. At the half, Pickens held a slim lead, 27-26.

 

In the 3rd, it was more back and forth between the two teams as they proved to be very evenly matched throughout the game. The Lady Generals had a slight 13-12 quarter advantage to send us to the 4th, tied at 39. In the 4th, the physicality that this game had kept up as fans from both sides of the stands were clamoring for fouls through the majority of the contest. Heritage was able to hit their free throws at the end of the game to come out with the win, 53-46.

‘Nettes 3-Game Win Streak Ends At The Hands Of Num. 9 Bruins

On Friday, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the 9th ranked team in all of 4A, the Northwest Whitfield Lady Bruins in what was an early region showdown. The ‘Nettes, came in winners of their last three games, two being region games to stand atop the standings and were looking for number four.

 

In the first, it was the Lady Bruins getting out to the quick start. Pickens, however, got things rolling towards the end of the frame to cut the Northwest Whitfield lead to 15-10 going to the 2nd. In what was a very physical first half, the Lady Bruins began to build their lead. Northwest Whitfield led the ‘Nettes going into the break, 32-20.

 

In the 3rd, The Lady Bruins used their smothering pressure defense to contain the ‘Nettes. While the quarter score was close at 16-13, Northwest Whitfield stretched their lead out slightly, 48-33 going to the 4th. In the 4th, the Lady Bruins began to pull away. Northwest Whitfield would use a 25-13 quarter run to defeat Pickens, 73-46.

The ‘Nettes will be at home again this Tuesday as they host the Lady Generals of Heritage. Heritage, is undefeated on the season at 8-0 and tied with Northwest Whitfield for 1st in the region at 3-0. The ‘Nettes, are currently tied for 3rd with Southeast Whitfield at 2-1. Tip off scheduled for 6 p.m.

‘Nettes Win 3rd Straight, Sweep 7A Forsyth Central

Yesterday afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Forsyth County to take on the Lady Bulldogs of Forsyth Central in a non-region affair. These two teams met last month inside the Dragons Den to open up the season, with Pickens coming away with a 61-54 win.

 

In the 1st, both teams struggled to get anything going early on. As the quarter went on, both teams found some offense and were tied at 11 going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, things still remained tightly contested between the two teams. The ‘Nettes were able to build a lead of 23-17 to send us to the half.

 

Both teams proved to be fairly even during the ball game and it continued to show in the 3rd. Both sides would score 9 points each in the frame with Pickens still leading, 32-26 going to the 4th. In the 4th, the ‘Nettes were able to hold off any comeback attempt by the Lady Bulldogs and make the shots they needed to get the 43-36 win.

The ‘Nettes will have this upcoming week to prepare for another big test. Pickens will be hosting the Lady Bruins of Northwest Whitfield this coming Friday. The Lady Bruins, are a highly regarded team and are even ranked in the top ten of some polls.

‘Nettes Get Big Region Win Over Lady Cats

Tonight, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted their rival, Gilmer Lady Cats in the Dragons Den for a highly anticipated match up. These two teams came down to the wire last week in the Thanksgiving Tournament, with Gilmer coming out on top. This time, it counts in the region standings with both coming in at 1-0.

 

In the 1st, it would be the Lady Cats getting out to an early lead. The ‘Nettes however, got the three ball working and took a 19-10 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, Pickens turned up the intensity both offensively and defensively. The ‘Nettes outscored Gilmer 22-11 in the frame to extend their lead 41-21 going into the half.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens continued it’s success from the 1st half. Outscoring the Lady Cats in the 3rd, 17-13, the ‘Nettes took a 58-34 lead going to the 4th and final quarter of play. The 4th saw Pickens close things out and get a 72-47 win over Gilmer. With the win, Pickensis now 5-2 on the season and tied for 1st in 6-AAAA at 2-0.

Pickens will have little rest time as they will be on the road tomorrow as they take on out of region opponent, the Forsyth Central Lady Bulldogs. The ‘Nettes picked up an early win against the 7A school at home and look to sweep the season series tomorrow afternoon. Tip off scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
