Dragons Conclude Holiday Classic Against Jackson

This past Wednesday night, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team hosted the Jaguars of Maynard H. Jackson in the final day of the Pickens Holiday Classic. The Dragons looked to get a win prior to getting into region play on Tuesday.

 

The 1st quarter saw the Dragons come out on fire. Both teams were executing offensively and the opening frame ended with a 14-14 tie. In the 2nd quarter, Pickens took a slight lead. Jackson however, was able to hit a three at the buzzer to take a 37-34 lead. The 1st half was highlighted by dunks from Tyler Garner & Sam Davis.

 

In the 3rd, the offense for the Dragons stalled. The Jaguars outscored Pickens 19-6 in the 3rd, to stretch their lead out to 56-30 going to the 4th. Jackson closed out the ball game with a 16-9 run to take this one, 73-49.

 

Leading the way for the Dragons were:

Holden Roop: 16 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, & 1 steal

Trent Rizoti: 10 points, 2 assists, & 3 rebounds

Joseph Gossett: 8 points, 1 assist, & 2 rebounds

Tyler Garner: 6 points, 2 assists, 3 rebounds, & 1 steal

Sam Davis: 4 points, 1 assist, & 2 steals

Blake Gorth finished with 2 points, 1 rebound, & 1 block, & DJ Walden had 2 points, 1 rebound, & 1 steal.

 

As mentioned earlier, the Dragons will be back in region play this Tuesday as they host the Raiders of Southeast Whitfield. The Raiders are currently 5-8 (play Christian Heritage tomorrow), & 3-2 in region play. Senior Ty Pendley leads all of 4A averaging 27.3 ppg. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Nettes’ Close Out Pickens Holiday Classic Against Cherokee

On Wednesday, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Cherokee Lady Warriors in the third and final day of the Pickens Holiday Classic. After two tough losses, the Nettes’ looked to end the tournament on a good note, heading into region play next week.

 

The first quarter saw the young Nettes’ team stay with the 11-2 Lady Warriors. Cherokee held a slim 9-7 lead going to the 2nd quarter. Offensive struggles plagued Pickens in the 2nd quarter as the Lady Warriors went on a 19-4 run to take a 28-11 lead into the break.

 

In the 3rd, the offense for the Nettes’ picked up as they outscored Cherokee 17-16. However, the Lady Warriors still held the lead, 44-28, headed to the 4th. Cherokee went on an 11-0 quarter run in the 4th to get the win, 55-28.

 

Leading the way for the Nettes’ were:

Mackenzie Hampton: 10 points, 2 assists, 8 rebounds, & 1 steal

Madison McClure: 9 points, 3 assists, 1 rebound, & 2 steals

Shelby Cook: 9 points, 1 rebound, & 1 block

This coming Tuesday, the Nettes’ will be back in action as they host the Lady Raiders of Southeast Whitfield in 7-AAAA play. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Dragons Fall To River Ridge In Physical Game

Earlier tonight, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team hosted the Knights of River Ridge in the second day of the Pickens Holiday Classic. After losing the first game to Model last night, the Dragons looked to rebound against the Knights.

 

It was a tight contest in the beginning of this one. River Ridge took the lead after one, 18-12. In the 2nd, the Dragons chipped away at the Knights lead by outscoring River Ridge 14-12, trailing the Knights 30-26 at the half.

 

The physical nature of the game showed up in the 3rd. River Ridge outscored Pickens 21-12 in the quarter to stretch their lead to 51-38, going to the 4th and final quarter. The Knights put this one away in the 4th after a 16-14 quarter run to take it, 67-52.

 

Leading the way for the Dragons were:

Holden Roop: 18 points, 5 assists, 1 rebound, & 3 steals

Trent Rizoti: 9 points, 7 rebounds, & 2 steals

DJ Walden: 8 points, 2 rebounds, & 1 steal (All in the 4th)

Tyler Garner: 6 points, & 1 rebound

Blake Gorth had 2 points, 1 assist, 1 rebound, & 1 steal while Seth Bishop finished with 2 points, 1 rebound, & 1 steal.

 

The Dragons will conclude the Pickens Holiday Classic tomorrow night as they host the Maynard Jackson Jaguars. Tip off set for 7:30 p.m. in the new gym.

Nettes’ Lose Tough Game To River Ridge

Earlier this evening, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the River Ridge Lady Knights in day 2 of the Pickens Holiday Classic. Nettes’ looked to bounce back after dropping one last night to Creekview.

 

In the beginning of the 1st, both teams felt each other out. The Lady Knights took the lead after one, 16-9. In the 2nd quarter, River Ridge stretched their lead over the Nettes’ out to 32-18 after a 16-9 quarter run.

 

The 3rd quarter started off slowly. The Lady Knights outscored Pickens by 10, 17-7 in the 3rd to take a 49-25 lead heading to the 4th. The 4th was the closest quarter since the 1st in terms of scoring. River Ridge barely outscored the Nettes’ 12-7 in the frame to seal a 61-32 win.

 

Leading the way for the Nettes’ were:

Torie Williams: 10 points, & 6 rebounds

Mackenzie Hampton: 6 points, 2 assists, & 5 rebounds

Shelby Cook: 5 points, & 5 rebounds

Ashley Nelson: 5 points, 1 assist, & 1 rebound

Madison McClure finished with 4 points, 1 assist, & 3 steals, & Autumn Young had 2 points, 2 assists, & 2 rebounds.

The Nettes’ will finish up the Pickens Holiday Classic tomorrow as they host the Cherokee Lady Warriors. Tip off scheduled for 6 p.m. in gthe new gym.

Dragons Begin Pickens Holiday Classic Against Model

Last night, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team hosted the Blue Devils of Model in the first day of the Pickens Holiday Classic. Model is a AA school out of Rome.

 

The 1st quarter for the most part was back and forth. Model made a late run to take a 19-11 lead going to the 2nd. The 2nd quarter belonged to the Dragons. Pickens outscored the Blue Devils 17-13, to cut the Model lead to 32-28 going into the break.

 

In the 3rd, the Blue Devils stretched their lead out slightly. Model outscored the Dragons 18-14, to take a 50-42 lead going into the 4th and final quarter. The Blue Devils were able to hit free throws down the stretch and take this one 66-54 after outscoring Pickens in the 4th, 16-12.

 

Leading the way for the Dragons were:

Trent Rizoti: 15 points, 1 assist, & 6 rebounds

Joseph Gossett: 11 points, & 1 assist

Holden Roop: 9 points, 5 assists, 1 rebound, & 1 steal

Nettes’ Fall To Undefeated Lady Tigers

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team hosted the Lady Tigers of Dawson County in a non-region game. Dawson came into the ball game undefeated at 9-0 while the Nettes’ looked to build momentum after their big win against Cartersville last Friday.

 

In the 1st quarter, both teams found early success. The Lady Tigers took the lead after the first frame, 11-8. Dawson County stretched it’s lead out in the 2nd quarter outscoring the Nettes’ 20-11. The Lady Tigers held the lead at the half, 31-19.

 

The 3rd quarter was a back breaker for Pickens as they could not get anything to drop. Dawson County led things going to the 4th, 52-28. In the 4th, the Nettes’ got back on track offensively outscoring the Lady Tigers 18-17 in the quarter. Dawson County however, came away with the victory, 69-46.

 

Leading the way for the Nettes’ on the night were:

Torie Williams: 12 points, 2 assists, & 1 rebound

Madison McClure: 9 points, 3 assists, & 2 rebounds

Ashley Nelson: 7 points, 1 assist, 1 rebound, & 1 steal

Kaitlin Redman: 4 points, & 6 rebounds

Mackenzie Hampton finished with 4 points, 1 assist, & 2 rebounds, Bailey Payne had 3 points, & 2 assists, Allie Stephens had 3 points, and 2 rebounds, & Autumn Young had 2 points, 3 assists, and 1 rebound.

 

The Nettes’ will have the rest of the week off as they get ready for the annual Pickens Holiday Classic Tournament. The tournament will run from Monday through Wednesday next week and all tip offs for the Nettes’ are scheduled for 6 p.m.

Dragons Cannot Overcome Deficit Fall To Southeast Whitfield

Last Tuesday, The Dragons traveled up to Dalton to take on the Raiders of Southeast Whitfield in a very important region game. Pickens, coming off of a thrilling 3-point win over Woodstock Saturday, looked to continue that momentum into Monday and pick up their tenth win of the season. This tournament had boys and girls teams from A-6A come play in both the new and old gyms at PHS. The first game of the Classic had Pickens squaring off with a 6A school, the Woodstock Wolverines. Pickens Held in Check in Second Day of Holiday Classic

The Pickens Dragonettes and Dragons held their own for a while on the second day of the Pickens Holiday Classic but unfortunately were unable to come out victorious, as the Nettes fought hard but lost to Collins Hill 44-40 and the Dragons played great but eventually came up on the wrong side of a 59-55 game.
