Dragons Season Ends At 6-AAAA Region Tournament

Last night, it was the Dragons varsity basketball team’s turn to head to Dalton to start their region tournament, also being held at Southeast Whitfield. Pickens, came into the tournament as the #7 seed, & they would be taking on the #2 seed, Northwest Whitfield Bruins in the opening round.

 

The beginning of the 1st quarter saw the Dragons get out to a quick start. Midway through the frame both teams were going back and forth with each other, trading buckets. Northwest Whitfield took the lead heading to the 2nd, 22-15. In the 2nd, the Bruins stretched their lead a bit, but Pickens still found itself within striking distance. Using a 19-13 quarter advantage, Northwest Whitfield took a 41-28 lead into the break.

 

The 3rd quarter, was not kind to Pickens. Nothing would fall for the Dragons as the Bruins stretched their lead out more. A 20-6 quarter run by Northwest Whitfield, gave them a 61-34 lead over Pickens going to the 4th. The Bruins came away with this one, 83-49.

Dragons Fall In Final Seconds To 6-A River Ridge, Play Northwest Whitfield Tuesday in Region Tournament

It was the 2017-18 regular season finale last night as the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team welcomed the River Ridge Knights of the 6-A classification to the Dragons Den for the final tune up prior to the 6-AAAA Region Tournament. Both teams came in looking for momentum heading into their respective tournaments next week.

 

In the 1st quarter, the Dragons got off to a hot start right out of the gate. River Ridge, closed the gap as the frame came to a close, but Pickens held the lead going to the 2nd, 14-13. In the 2nd, both teams provided high paced, back & forth action for the crowd. The Knights, used a 13-11 quarter run, to take a 26-25 lead into the locker room.

 

In the third, it was more of the same action we saw in the first half as both teams proved to be fairly even. River Ridge used a 14-9 quarter advantage to stretch their lead to 40-34, going to the 4th. The 4th quarter saw a crazy ending to this one. Pickens, came back after trailing to begin the frame to take the lead at one point. The Knights however, had different thoughts. Even though the Dragons outscored River Ridge 15-11, the Knights were able to make a layup in the final seconds to take the win, 51-49.

Pickens, will now use the next couple of days to prepare for the upcoming 6-AAAA Region Tournament being held at Southeast Whitfield. The Dragons, will be the #7 seed and face the #2 seeded Northwest Whitfield Bruins on Tuesday in the opening round. The winner, will advance to the 4-A State Tournament. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Dragons 4th Quarter Comeback Falls Just Short At Southeast Whitfield, Host River Ridge Friday

The PHS Dragons varsity basketball team played a big game last night in Dalton as they took on the Raiders of Southeast Whitfield. With a win, and a little help, Pickens would end the night in a three-way tie for 5th in the region.

 

In the 1st, the Raiders got off to a quick 4-0 start, but the remainder of the frame was tightly contested. Heading to the 2nd, Southeast Whitfield held a 16-10 lead over the Dragons. The 2nd quarter, would be a tough one for Pickens as nothing would seem to fall. The Raiders, outscored the Dragons 18-9 in the 2nd to take 34-19 lead into the half.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens started the comeback ever so slightly. The Dragons, outscored Southeast Whitfield 18-17, to cut the Raider lead to 51-37, going to the 4th. Pickens, started the 4th out hot. Cutting the Southeast Whitfield lead down in half and even further. Despite outscoring the Raiders 23-18 in the 4th, & 41-35 in the 2nd half, Southeast Whitfield was able to hold on and get the win, 69-60.

Dragons Drop Tough Game To War Eagles, Play Crucial Region Game At SE Whitfield Tuesday

This past Saturday afternoon, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team hosted the Chestatee War Eagles in a non-region contest. This day, was also recognized as Senior Night. Pickens, was fresh off of a big road win the previous night against Ridgeland, & looked to carry over the momentum built in that game over to their game against Chestatee.

 

In the 1st quarter, the scoring happened early and the pace quickened just as fast. Chestatee raced out to an early 22-13 lead, heading to the 2nd. The 2nd quarter saw both teams go back & forth, bucket for bucket, including a big time thrown down from Junior Zach Goss for the Dragons. After using a 20-16 quarter run, the War Eagles took a 42-29 lead over Pickens into the break.

 

The 3rd saw the War Eagles extend their lead over the Dragons using an 18-12 advantage. Chestatee held the lead, 60-41 going to the 4th. Chestatee would take this one from Pickens, 75-54.

Tomorrow night, the Dragons will head to Dalton to take on the Southeast Whitfield Raiders, in what is most likely, the biggest game of the season so far. A win for Pickens, could mean that these same teams meet in the first round of the upcoming region tournament. Tip off time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Dragons Get Big Road Win Against Ridgeland, Welcome Chestatee For Senior Day

The Dragons, took to the road last night as they made the long trek to take on the Ridgeland Panthers in a crucial 6-AAAA meeting. Pickens, came into the game looking to gather some momentum heading into the final week of the regular season, & hoped to start that, by splitting with Ridgeland.

 

Both teams came out firing in the opening quarter as the offense was flowing on both ends. The Dragons, used the fast start to grab a 20-17 lead over the Panthers going to the 2nd. The offensive success for both squads carried over into the 2nd quarter, & it looked like after the first half of play that we’d be in for a shootout. Ridgeland, used an 18-17 quarter advantage to trim the Pickens lead to 37-35, going to the break.

 

The 3rd quarter, was again, fast paced, intense back and forth action as both teams looked fairly matched up with each other. The Panthers, with the help of a 19-15 quarter advantage, seized the lead over the Dragons going to the 4th, 54-52. In the 4th, Pickens, would show no quit, as they used a 22-13 quarter run, and some nicely timed defensive stops to get the big road win over the Panthers, 74-67.

Dragons Battle, Fall Short To War Eagles In Season Opener

Last night, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team headed down to Gainesville to take on the War Eagles of Chestatee in the season opener for the 2017-18 season. This one had a little of everything you want in sports. Excitement, drama, great plays.

 

In the 1st quarter, Chestatee got out to a quick lead, & built it up prior to the end of the frame. Heading to the 2nd, the War Eagles held a 21-8 lead after one. In the 2nd, Pickens got things going, and made a massive run. The Dragons, outscored Chestatee in the 2nd quarter, 25-16, to trim the War Eagle lead to 37-33, going into halftime.

 

In the 3rd, the Dragons kept the momentum built from the 2nd quarter, and used it to take the lead from Chestatee after a 26-19 quarter run. Going to the 4th, Pickens led the War Eagles, 59-56. In the 4th, the two teams took turns with the lead. Several players would foul out for both teams, & a couple of technicals were handed out as well. Chestatee would use a 26-21 run, & several late free throws to get the win, 85-77.

Pickens, will now look forward to the annual Thanksgiving Tip-Off Tournament that is starting on Saturday, & will be held in Ellijay this year. The tournament features Pickens, Gilmer, Fannin, & Hiwassee Dam. The Dragons, will start the tournament off with their rival, the Gilmer Bobcats on Saturday at 4:30 pm.

Dragons Fight To The End Against Sonoraville

It was mid-afternoon basketball earlier today as the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team headed to Calhoun to take on the Phoenix of Sonoraville in a non-region contest. Sonoraville, took the first meeting between these two earlier in the season in Jasper, & the Dragons were looking to earn a season split.

 

The first quarter, was a hard fought, even frame. The Phoenix, came away from a close opening quarter with the slim lead, 13-12. The 2nd quarter, saw much of the same back and forth action as the 1st quarter provided. Both teams scored 18 points a piece, & it would be the Phoenix still on top of the Dragons going to the break, 31-30.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens began to chip away at the Sonoraville lead. Using a 16-14 quarter advantage, the Dragons cut the Phoenix lead down to single digits as they trailed 55-46, going to the final quarter. Sonoraville, would use an 18-9 quarter run in the 4th to seal the win, 73-55.

Dragons Split Regular Season Region Games With Gilmer, Host Union Tuesday

Last night, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team hosted their bitter rival, the Gilmer Bobcats, for some Friday night 6-AAAA basketball. The last time these two met, it was back in the cage in Ellijay with the Dragons coming away the winners in overtime.

 

Much like the opening quarter of the girls game, both offenses got things going early, & it was highly contested. Also much like the girls game, Pickens held the lead after the 1st, 19-14. The 2nd quarter, saw the Dragons stretch their lead using some tough defense to lead to some fantastic transition baskets on the offensive end. Using a 14-10 quarter run, Pickens held the advantage over Gilmer, 33-24, going into the break.

 

In the 3rd, the Bobcats got things rolling on their end. After being down 9 to start the 2nd half, Gilmer used a 26-17 quarter run to take a 50-47 lead over Pickens going to the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, both teams would score 15 points each. However, that would not be enough for the Dragons as Gilmer held on to take this one, 65-62.

Dragons Fall To Northwest Whitfield

The PHS Dragons basketball team made the trip up to Tunnel Hill to take on the Northwest Whitfield Bruins last night in a 6-AAAA region game. The previous meeting in Jasper went the way of the Bruins, & the Dragons, were looking to even up the season series.

 

The first quarter, was fairly even until the end of the frame as Northwest Whitfield took an early lead. Going to the 2nd, the Bruins held a 20-11 lead over the Dragons. The 2nd quarter, would be very unkind to Pickens. The Dragons, kept getting unlucky on offense as the Bruins stretched their lead out. Going into the half, Northwest Whitfield held a 47-21 advantage.

 

Pickens, finally saw the ball go in the bucket and found some consistent offense in a very competitive 3rd quarter. Northwest Whitfield, outscored the Dragons 19-17, to maintain the lead 66-38, going to the 4th. Northwest Whitfield, closed this one out in the 4th as the Bruins took this one, 79-42.

Dragons, Fall To LaFayette, Host Bobcats Friday

The PHS Dragons varsity basketball team made their way up to LaFayette last night to take on the LaFayette Ramblers in a 6-AAAA region game. LaFayette, came in with a record of 14-1 on the season, & one of the top teams in the region. Pickens, was looking to earn a split with the Ramblers during the season match ups.

 

In the opening quarter, both teams would find it difficult to find points as the defense for both teams played very well. LaFayette held the lead going to the 2nd, 13-8. In the 2nd, LaFayette, stretched it’s lead out slightly using a 15-9 quarter run, but Pickens still found itself very much in striking distance. The Ramblers, took a 28-17 lead into to break.

 

The 3rd quarter, was back and forth with both teams seeing the ball go in the hoop. Lafayette, outscored the Dragons 15-12, in a highly contested quarter, to take a lead of 43-29 into the 4th. In the 4th, the Ramblers used a 16-11 quarter run to seal the win, 59-40.

Tale Of Two Halves For The Dragons & Sonoraville

We had mid-afternoon basketball yesterday as the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team hosted the Sonoraville Phoenix out of 6-AAA for a non-region match up. These two teams split the season series last season, with both teams winning away from each other’s home floor.

 

In the 1st quarter, both teams found offense quickly. Sonoraville, held the lead after a fast paced opening frame, 19-18. The 2nd quarter, mirrored the 1st as the offense for both teams stayed hot. Both teams scored 16 points each in the 2nd, & the Phoenix took a 35-34 lead over the Dragons going to the break.

 

The 2nd, half would be the difference of this ball game. In the 3rd, Sonoraville, outscored Pickens 21-11, & the Dragons found themselves down 56-45, going to the 4th, but as we’ve seen lately, they certainly were not out of it. The 4th quarter, was a back and forth frame, as most of the ball game turned out to be. The Phoenix, outscored the Dragons 25-16 in the final quarter to get the win, 81-61.

Dragons Tip Off Holiday Classic Against Christian Heritage

This afternoon, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team made their way to Fannin to begin the 2017 Mountain Top Holiday Classic. Thier opening day opponent would be the 9-0 Christian Heritage Lions.

 

The Christian Heritage Lions got off to a quick start to begin the first quarter, Pickens, got some offense going by the end of the frame, but trailed going to the 2nd, 23-11. The 2nd quarter, wasn’t pleasant to the Dragons as the Lions stretched out their lead using a 21-7 run to head into the break with a 44-18 advantage.

 

The 3rd quarter, Pickens started to find a little consistency on the offensive end as they put up 16 points in the quarter, nearly matching their 1st half total. Christian Heritage still held the advantage going to the 4th, 68-34. The consistency the Dragons showed in the 3rd quarter, carried over into the 4th as they were able to outscore the Lions 14-8. Christian Heritage would take this one, 76-48.

Dragons Fall To Undefeated Panthers, Will Participate In Christmas Tourney Next Week

The PHS Dragons varsity basketball team traveled to Union County last night to take on the Panthers in a non-region game. Coming into the game, the Dragons were looking to end a recent string of tough games while the Panthers, came in undefeated.

 

In the 1st, The Panthers were able to gather a lead to begin the frame. Pickens, started to cut into the lead towards the end of the quarter. As we would head to the 2nd, Union held a 17-9 lead. The 2nd quarter, would not be kind to the Dragons as they could not get anything to fall. The Panthers stretched their lead using a 25-10 quarter advantage to take a 42-19 lead into the half.

 

In the 3rd, the Dragons started seeing things click on both sides. At one point, Pickens trimmed a 23 point deficit to 10 in the 3rd. The Dragons, outscored Union 20-11 in the 3rd, but still found themselves down 53-39 going to the 4th. The Panthers, were able to close things out with a 19-11 quarter run, to get the win, 72-50.

Dragons Fight Hard In Tough Road Game At Heritage

Last night, the PHS varsity Dragons basketball team took to the road to face the Generals of Heritage in a 6-AAAA region game. Pickens, was coming off of a thrilling last second overtime win over their rivals, the Gilmer Bobcats, & hadn’t been able to play since then due to the weather over the weekend.

 

In the 1st, it was much like the girls game beforehand. Both teams trying to find their footing. Heritage, was able to build a 19-11 lead over the Dragons going into the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, the Generals would take advantage of some miscues by Pickens and outscored the Dragons 25-13 in the frame to take a 44-24 lead into the break.

 

Pickens, got things working in the 3rd quarter as they looked to get back into the game. The Dragons, at one time cut the lead down to single digits after being down 20 to start the frame. They outscored Heritage 23-18 in the 3rd, but found themselves still trailing going to the 4th, 62-47. In the 4th, the Generals closed it out with a 16-14 quarter run to take this one, 78-61.

Dragons Fall In Region Opener To LaFayette, Face Gilmer In Ellijay Friday Night

On Tuesday evening, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team hosted the LaFayette Ramblers for their first home game of the season & the first region game of the season. Pickens, was coming off being named co-champions of the Thanksgiving Tip-Off Tournament, while LaFayette came in as a favorite in the region heading into the season after barely losing to Northwest Whitfield in the region title game last season. It would be a good test for a Dragons team that came in 2-2.

 

In the 1st quarter, LaFayette got off to the better start, pulling ahead early. However, the back end of the 1st saw things pick up for Pickens as they cut the Rambler lead to 22-14 going to the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, both teams struggled to have some consistent offense. LaFayette outscored the Dragons 9-6 in the frame to give them a lead of 31-20 going into the break.

 

The 2nd half, would not be kind to the home standing Dragons unfortunately. The Ramblers had everything go their way while it seemed nothing would fall for Pickens. In the 3rd, LaFayette would use a 17-3 quarter advantage to take a 48-23 lead into the 4th. The Ramblers, would be able to close this game out and get the win, 65-30.

The Dragons will now turn to Friday Night as they will make the short trip up 515 and head to Ellijay to take on the Gilmer Bobcats in a region match up. These two teams met in Fannin not too long ago and Pickens came away with a 10 point win. Both finished with 2-1 records & a share of the tournament trophy. Tip off scheduled for 8:30 pm.

Dragons Win Share Of Tip-Off Tournament Title, Begin Region Play Tuesday

PHS Basketball, Team FYN Sports

The PHS Dragons varsity basketball team was again in Blue Ridge last night for the third and final day of the Thanksgiving Tip-Off Tournament. Pickens, would be taking on the host team, the Fannin Rebels. Both teams were coming off tough losses on Tuesday, & looked to end the tournament on a good note.

 

Much like the ‘Nettes in the game beforehand, the Dragons got off to a fast start against the Rebels. Pickens held a 26-14 advantage after the 1st. In the 2nd, both teams traded buckets in high paced action. The Dragons outscored Fannin by a slight edge of 12-11 to take a 38-25 lead into the break.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens kept holding off any Rebel comeback chance, while adding to their lead. The highlight of the half, & maybe the game, was a thunderous slam by the Dragons’ Seth Bishop. The Dragons used a 12-9 run in the 3rd to stretch their lead over Fannin to 50-34 going to the 4th. A 20-12 4th quarter run would seal the victory for the Dragons. Your final score, 70-46. With the win, Pickens shares a piece of the championship with Gilmer. Both finished at 2-1.

Zach Goss: 6 points, 3 assists, & 4 rebounds (All-Tournament selection)

Chase Simmons: 5 points, 2 rebounds, & 2 steals

 

With the win, Pickens now moves to 2-2 on the season. The Dragons, will finally be home on Tuesday as they host the LaFayette Ramblers in a game that will open region play. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
