Dragons Pull Off Big Region Win On The Road Against Northwest Whitfield

The Dragons, came into this game looking to avenge a loss from earlier in the season, & to try and rebound after a tough last second loss in Ellijay on Tuesday night.

 

In the first quarter of this one, it was the away team that got out to the quick start as Pickens jumped out to a 9-2 lead early on. As the quarter came to a close, the Dragons kept their early lead, and took a 16-12 advantage over Northwest Whitfield going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, the Bruins got things going on their end outscoring Pickens 25-14, to take a 37-30 lead going into the break.

 

Pickens came back in the 3rd quarter & cut into the Bruins lead, keeping it within striking distance. The Dragons, outscored Northwest Whitfield 18-17 in the frame as the Bruins held a 54-48 lead going to the 4th. In the 4th, the Pickens offense exploded. The Dragons, using a 30-17 run in the final quarter, took this one away from Northwest Whitfield & picked up the win, 78-71.

This week’s #TeamFYNSports Sports Writer Player of the Week is a pair of PHS Seniors. Torie Williams, & Seth Bishop. At the end of every week we will select one Nettes player & one Dragons player as our players of the week. This week, Torie & Seth claim the honors.

 

Torie Williams, played very well against tough competition this week as Pickens went up against Dawson & Forsyth Central in non-region action. Williams, finished with 12 points, 3 assists, 4 rebounds, & 2 steals against Dawson, while collecting 14 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds, & 3 steals against Forsyth Central. Williams, is committed to continue her basketball career at Reinhardt University.

 

For Seth Bishop, it was a special week. Not only did he have good games against solid opponents, he surpassed the 1,000 career point mark against Forsyth Central. Against Dawson, Bishop had 26 points, 3 assists, & 10 rebounds. He followed that up with a 23 point, 2 assist, 8 rebound performance against Forsyth Central.

 

It’ll be a busy week this week for the Nettes & the Dragons as they will play a pair of region games, & the Dragons will play another non-region game. Tomorrow, Heritage comes to town with tip-off is scheduled for 6 & 7:30. Friday, Pickens will head to Rossville, to take on Ridgeland at 6 & 7:30 as well. On Saturday, the Dragons will host Forsyth Central at 2:30.

This week’s #TeamFYNSports basketball Players of the Week are Mykenzie Weaver & Seth Bishop. These two players had a good week to begin the 2018-19 season. Here is a look at their week.

 

Mykenzie Weaver, had a busy week. The Nettes, hosted 7A Forsyth Central, then they took part in the annual Thanksgiving Tournament in Ellijay. Weaver, had 16 points, & 4 rebounds against Forsyth Central, 27 points, 9 rebounds, & 5 steals against Fannin, 23 points, & 5 rebounds against Hiwassee Dam, & 10 points, & 5 rebounds against Gilmer. She was named to the All-Tournament Team.

 

Seth Bishop, had 18 points against Fannin, 22 points, 5 assists, 5 steals, & 10 rebounds against Hiwassee Dam, & 15 points, & 12 rebounds against Gilmer. Seth was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

 

Dragons Fall To Forsyth Central In Non-Region Action

Yesterday afternoon, the Dragons varsity basketball team hosted the Forsyth Central Bulldogs out of the 7A classification for a non-region contest. Pickens, came into the ball game having won back to back region games against Heritage & Ridgeland, & looked to end the week with their 3rd straight win.

 

The first quarter of this game was much like the Dragons game against Ridgeland the other night, back & forth. The visiting Bulldogs, took a one point lead going to the 2nd, 13-12. In the 2nd quarter, the two teams remained close, but Forsyth Central was able to extend it’s lead slightly over Pickens going to the break, 28-22.

 

In the 3rd, the Bulldogs, would outscore the Dragons by ten, 20-10, to take a 48-32 lead going to the 4th & final quarter of play. The 4th quarter was closely played as Forsyth Central outscored Pickens 20-14, to seal the win, 68-46.

Dragons Fall In Final Region Game Of 2018, Host Christian Heritage Tomorrow

After the Nettes picked up a big win earlier, the Dragons looked to complete the varsity sweep over a Southeast Whitfield Raider team that recently took down reigning 6-AAAA region champs Lafayette not too long ago.

 

In the 1st, both teams found scoring, mainly inside the paint. After one, the Southeast Whitfield Raiders led the Dragons 21-17. In the 2nd, the Raiders started getting the tree ball to go down, but Pickens stayed within striking distance. Going into the half, Southeast Whitfield held a 44-34 lead.

 

The 3rd quarter scoring again was close as the two teams went back and forth. The Raiders, outscored Pickens 18-15, & held a 62-49 lead going to the 4th. Southeast Whitfield used a 14-6 4th quarter run, to take this one from the Dragons, 76-55.

Despite 35 From Bishop, Dragons Drop Game Against Bruins

After the Nettes’ fell in a tough game against the Lady Bruins, the Dragons took on the Bruins in the night cap of this varsity doubleheader, looking to split the games on the evening.

 

The Dragons, came out with a big time sense of energy and it showed as they got off to a nice lead over the Bruins. Using that nice start, Pickens took a 17-12 lead going to the 2nd. The 2nd quarter saw an action packed, fast paced, high scoring frame. Northwest Whitfield, outscored the Dragons 26-19, to take a 38-36 lead into the break.

 

The 3rd quarter, saw the Bruins continue their momentum from the 2nd quarter as they outscored Pickens 28-16, to take a 66-52 lead going to the 4th. Northwest Whitfield would hold on in the 4th to get the win, 87-68.

Dragons Fall To Gilmer In Tough Rivalry Game, Host Bruins on Friday Night

After the exciting girls game finished, it would be the guys turn as the Dragons hosted the Gilmer Bobcats. Much like the Lady Cats, the Bobcats came into the game 8-1 on the season. Pickens, came in looking to gain some momentum by defeating their rival, & moving to 2-2 in region play.

 

In the first, both teams traded bucket for bucket, going back and forth. Gilmer, was able to gather a 15-14 lead over the Dragons, going to the 2nd. The 2nd quarter, was much like the 1st quarter as it was very much even at times. While the Bobcats outscored Pickens 19-16 in the frame, the Dragons remained in striking distance going to the half down 34-30.

 

In the 3rd, the defense for the Bobcats picked up a bit. Gilmer, outscored the Dragons 22-14 in the 3rd, to stretch their lead to 56-44, going to the 4th. Gilmer, used a 16-7 4th quarter run to seal the win, 72-51.

Dragons Earn 1st Win Of Season, Even Region Record

After the Nettes’ took care of business in the opening game, the Dragons looked to complete the sweep on the evening and notch their first win of the season. Pickens, has been in every game they’ve played so far, & looked to finally close one out, while getting a region win at the same time.

 

In a competitive opening frame, both Pickens & Ridgeland got things rolling for themselves. The Dragons, were able to grab the lead going to the 2nd, 15-11. This game looked like it was going to be tied heading into the break, but Brady Moore was able to corral a shot attempt and put it back up and in just before the buzzer sounded to give Pickens the 27-25 lead at the half.

 

The 3rd quarter saw the Dragon lead increase as Pickens outscored the Panthers 22-18, to take a 49-43 lead going to the 4th. In a back and forth final quarter, Ridgeland outscored the Dragons 26-23, but Pickens held on and picked up their first win of the season, 72-69. This also marks the first win for Mike Duffie as Dragon head coach.

Dragons Fight Hard Against Hiwassee Dam, Face Bobcats This Evening

After the Nettes’ picked up their 2nd win of the young season, the Dragons looked to capture their first win as they took on the Hiwassee Dam Eagles out of North Carolina.

 

The 1st quarter was packed with action as both teams saw offensive success early on. Pickens, got the upper hand & took a 19-15 lead over the Eagles going to the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, Hiwassee Dam used a run to take the lead from the Dragons. Having outscored Pickens 18-12 in the frame, the Eagles grabbed the lead, 33-31, going to the break.

 

In a back and forth 3rd quarter, the Dragons made their own run to regain the lead from Hiwassee Dam. Using a slight 20-17 quarter advantage, Pickens found themselves ahead going to the 4th, 51-50. In the 4th, Hiwassee Dam was able to make shots late to take this one, 66-60.

Dragons Hang With Region’s Top Team, Face Bobcats On Tuesday

After the Nettes’ took care of business in their game, it was the Dragons turn to take the court. Their opponent, the region leading LaFayette Ramblers who, coming into the game, had only lost one game the entire season. The Ramblers, took game one of the season series earlier in the year, & Pickens looked to even the series, & shock the region in the process.

 

In the opening quarter, the Dragons came out on fire. Pickens, used a great combination of offense & defense to jump out to a 21-11 lead over LaFayette going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, the Ramblers started getting things going for themselves. They used a 21-6 quarter run, to take a 32-27 lead over the Dragons going into halftime.

 

In the 3rd quarter, the scoring in the quarter remained close as LaFayette barely outscored Pickens 19-15. Going to the 4th, the away team held the lead, 51-42. In the 4th & final quarter, the Ramblers used a 21-18 run, & some late free throws to seal the win, 72-60.

Dragons Sweep Ridgeland To Win 2nd Straight, Host Forsyth Central This Afternoon

After the Nettes’ picked up a big win to keep their winning streak alive, the Dragons, looked to create a winning streak. After defeating Heritage the other night, Pickens came into Ridgeland not only for their 2nd win in a row, but a season sweep over the Panthers.

 

The first quarter, saw it go back and forth between both teams. The Panthers, took a 15-12 lead into the 2nd quarter. In the 2nd, it looked like we were going into the break tied at 32, but Ridgeland was able to get 5 quick points, including a buzzer beating three to take a 37-32 lead over the Dragons, going into halftime.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens started it’s comeback. The Dragons, would outscore Ridgeland 14-9 in the 3rd to cut the Panther lead down to 46-44, going to the 4th. In the 4th quarter, Pickens used defense to create offense as they outscored the Panthers 23-14 to complete the season sweep & get the win, 67-60.

Dragons Get Ready For Christmas Tournament Next Week At Model High School

After the Nettes’ & Lady Tigers game concluded, it was time for the Dragons & the Tigers to take the floor. Dawson, much like their Lady Tiger teammates, came into this game ranked in the top ten in the 3A classification while Pickens came in looking to snap a bad streak and pick up a big non region win.

 

The game got off to a slow start with both teams trying to get that first bucket to go down. Eventually, both teams got points on the board and it would be Dawson taking a 21-12 lead over the Dragons going to the 2nd. Scoring in the 2nd quarter was close as the Tigers just managed to outscore Pickens 21-15 in the frame. Taking a 42-27 lead into the half.

 

The 3 pointer was falling for the Tigers last night & they used it to stop any run the Dragons would muster. Going to the 4th, Dawson led Pickens 67-41. The final from Dawsonville would be 80-47, Dawson.

Dragons Fall To Cedartown In Tough Game, Face LaFayette Friday

Much like the Nettes’, the PHS varsity Dragons basketball team was looking for their 2nd straight win. After getting their first win of the season against Ridgeland last Friday, Pickens came in looking for back to back wins before heading back into region play.

 

In the 1st quarter, much like the girls game, it was the visitors that got off to the quick start. After one, the Bulldogs held a 19-9 lead. In the 2nd quarter, the offense for the Dragons flowed much better, they were able to outscore Cedartown 17-15, to cut the lead to 34-26, going into the break.

 

The 3rd quarter, was not very friendly to the home team. The Bulldogs outscored Pickens, 21-8, as they built up a 55-34 lead going to the 4th. When this one finished, the final score would be 74-47.

Dragons Fall To Southeast Whitfield, Turn Attention To Region Tournament

After the Nettes’ big win, the Dragons took the floor to take on the Raiders of Southeast Whitfield in their final game of the regular season. Coming into the game, Pickens knew where they would be next week when the region tournament starts, but looked to get some momentum built going into it.

 

Southeast Whitfield, got off to the quick start in the opening quarter, but the Dragons were able to cut into the lead & the Raiders held a 14-9 advantage going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, the Raiders outscored Pickens 16-9, to extend their lead to 30-18 going into the break.

 

In the 3rd, the Raiders outscored the Dragons slightly, 14-12, to extend their lead to 44-30, going to the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, Pickens, did what they’ve done lately & made things interesting at the end. Trailing by 14 to start the frame, the Dragons stormed back and got within a couple of points of Southeast Whitfield. Pickens, outscored the Raiders 21-14 in the 4th, but Southeast Whitfield was able to hit a few late free throws to seal it, 58-51.

The Dragons, will come in as the 6th seed, & take on the 3rd seeded Heritage Generals in the 1st round on Tuesday. Pickens & Heritage split their two regular season meetings with each winning on the others floor. Tip off is set for 6 pm.

Dragons Battle With Christian Heritage In Close Game

The Dragons, like their Nettes’ contemporaries, have had an up & down week. On Tuesday, they fell at the last second to their rival Gilmer. On Friday, they went on the road to Northwest Whitfield, & stunned the Bruins after being down 14 in the 3rd quarter. Saturday, they went back on the road to take on a 17-4 Christian Heritage team in the final non-region game for the regular season.

 

In the first quarter, the Dragons started off on a 6-0 run. The Lions, closed the quarter on a 15-6 run to take a 15-12 lead over Pickens, going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, Christian Heritage was able to extend their lead using a 23-12 quarter run. Going into halftime, the Lions held a 38-24 lead over the Dragons.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens slowly started to make a comeback. Outscoring the Lions 16-14, the Dragons trailed Christian Heritage 52-40. In the 4th, the Dragons were able to cut the Lions lead all the way down to 4. However, Christian Heritage was able to hit some late free throws to pull away & get the win, 68-58.

Dragons Fall To Bulldogs As Bishop Surpasses 1,000 Career Points

After the JV Nettes’ & varsity Nettes’ picked up big wins, the Dragons varsity basketball team looked to complete the afternoon sweep over 7A Forsyth Central.

 

The Bulldogs, started the game on a 7-0 run. Pickens, fought back and after one, Forsyth Central led the Dragons, 21-16. In the 2nd quarter, the Dragons stayed within striking distance as the Bulldogs kept the lead going into halftime, 41-30.

 

The 3rd quarter, saw a career achievement reached as Senior Seth Bishop surpassed 1,000 points during his time at PHS. Forsyth Central, used a 23-12 quarter run to extend their lead going to the 4th, 64-42. The 4th quarter was closly contested with the Bulldogs barely outscoring the dragons, 17-15. Forsyth Central took the win however, 81-57.
