Dragons Fall To Rebels After Big 2nd Half, Face Hiwassee Dam Today

This past Saturday, The PHS Dragons varsity basketball team traveled to Ellijay to take part in the annual Thanksgiving Tournament. Pickens faced Fannin in day one of this three day affair.

 

As they did in the 1st quarter of the River Ridge game, the Dragons got off to a hot start against Fannin. Pickens held a 20-11 lead over the Rebels, going to the 2nd. In the 2nd, Pickens maintained it’s offensive flow. The Dragons outscored Fannin 16-12, to take a 36-23 lead into the break.

 

In the 3rd, the Rebel offense came to life. Fannin would hit three after three to outscore the Dragons 26-14 in the frame to cut the Pickens lead to 50-49 going to the 4th. In the 4th, the Fannin scoring barrage would continue. The Rebels finished the game on a 25-16 run to take this one, 74-66.

The Dragons will be back in Ellijay this afternoon to take on the Eagles of Hiwassee Dam. The Eagles fell to the hosting Gilmer Bobcats on Saturday night. Tip of is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

‘Nettes Open Up Thanksgiving Tournament With Win Over Fannin

This past Saturday, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team made the short trip up 515 to Ellijay to participate in the 1st day of the annual Thanksgiving Tournament. In this round robin format, the ‘Nettes drew the Lady Rebels of Fannin on day one.

 

In the opening quarter, both teams found points early. In the back and forth 1st frame, the ‘Nettes came away with the lead, 20-17. In the 2nd, the half continued to be close as Pickens outscored the Lady Rebels 15-10, to take a 35-27 lead into the break.

 

In the 3rd, the buckets kept coming in for both teams. The ‘Nettes added to their lead in the quarter using a 17-13 run to head to the 4th leading 52-40. In the 4th, Pickens held off Fannin and sank key free throws to outscore the Lady Rebels 13-9 to move to 2-1 on the season with a 65-49 win.

Dragons Fall To Rival Bobcats After Buzzer Beater, Gearing Up For Region Play

Yesterday, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team took to 515 again for the final day of the annual Thanksgiving Tournament to take on their bitter rival, the Gilmer Bobcats. Earlier in the day, the Fannin Rebels cliched the championship with their win over Hiwassee Dam, so the winner of the Pickens/Gilmer game, found themselves runner up.

 

In the 1st, we got a physical match up as expected when you have a Pickens & Gilmer game going. The Bobcats took a slim 13-12 lead into the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, the Dragons found a rhythm on offense. Pickens outscored Gilmer in the frame 20-17, to take a 32-30 lead into the break.

 

Both teams would get their shot working in 3rd, going back and forth. The Dragons held a 15-13 scoring advantage in the frame to take a 47-43 lead going to the 4th and final quarter. The 4th is where it got very interesting. During the 4th, a foul, & technical foul would be called on Gilmer. However, Pickens could not convert on those free throw attempts. With the clock under ten seconds and the scored tied, the Dragons got a wide open dunk to take a 2 point lead. The Bobcats, took the ball down the court and threw up a running three that banked in off the glass with 1.2 seconds left. The ensuing pass in bounds went out of play but stayed with Pickens, giving them 0.9 to work with. A prayer hit the back of the rim as time expired to give Gilmer the 55-54 win.

‘Nettes Suffer First Loss To River Ridge Prepare For Thanksgiving Tournament

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team had their first road game of the season as they traveled to Woodstock to take on the River Ridge Lady Knights of 6A. This would be another big challenge for the ‘Nettes coming off of their win this past Tuesday against 7A’s Forsyth Central Lady Bulldogs.

 

In the 1st, things started off slow for the ‘Nettes, but picked up as the quarter went on. Pickens cut into the small lead that the Lady Knights had, sending us to the 2nd with River Ridge on top, 16-13. In the 2nd, more back and forth action occured between the two teams. River Ridge outscored the ‘Nettes 10-9, to take a 26-22 lead into the break.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens ever so slightly cut into the Lady Knights lead. The ‘Nettes outscored River Ridge 15-14 in the frame to cut the lead to 40-37 going to the 4th. In the 4th, River Ridge would find it’s groove. The Lady Knights ended the game with a 17-6 run in the quarter to get the win, 57-43.

Dragons Get 1st Win In Big Way, Face Bobcats This Evening

Yesterday, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team found themselves once again in Ellijay for the 2nd day of the annual Thanksgiving Tournament. Their opponent, the Hiwassee Dam Eagles out of North Carolina. Both of these teams were coming off of tough losses on Saturday.

 

In the opening quarter, much like the game against Fannin, Pickens got off to a quick start. The Eagles made a mini run before the end of the quarter, as the Dragons took a 24-16 lead to the 2nd. In the 2nd, both teams found balance on offense. Pickens outscored Hiwassee Dam 17-15, to take a 41-31 lead into the break.

 

The defense got going along with the offense in the 3rd for the Dragons. Pickens went on a 19-9 run in the frame to take a 60-40 lead heading to the 4th and final quarter. The Dragons finished the game off on a 25-12 run to secure their first win of the young season, 85-52.

‘Nettes Get Back & Forth Win Over Lady Eagles, Face Gilmer Tonight

Yesterday afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Ellijay for day 2 of the annual Thanksgiving Tournament where they would face the Lady Eagles of Hiwassee Dam. Pickens, came into the game 1-0 in the tournament while the Lady Eagles were 0-1.

 

In the 1st, Hiwassee Dam got out to a very strong start. The Lady Eagles raced out to a 21-8 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, the Nettes offense picked it up. Pickens used a 14-4 quarter run to cut the Hiwassee Dam lead to 25-23 at the break.

 

In the 3rd, both teams had their offenses working. The Nettes again outscored the Lady Eagles 24-22, to cut the lead down to 1, 47-46. In the 4th, the Nettes were able to take control. Pickens used a 23-17 run to close it out and get the win, 69-64.

Nettes’ Grab Momentum Heading Into Region Play Next Week

Earlier this afternoon, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled to Fannin County for the third and final day of the annual Thanksgiving Tournament to take on the Lady Cougars of Copper Basin (TN). A win for Pickens meant a runner up finish in the tournament, and an even season record.

 

It was a slow start to the ball game for both teams in the first quarter. The Nettes’ were able to gain the lead going into the 2nd quarter, 10-5. In the 2nd quarter, Pickens extended it’s lead with a 14-8 quarter run to take a 24-13 lead into the break.

 

The Nettes’ offense & defense picked up in the 3rd quarter as they held the Lady Cougars to just 2 3rd quarter points while scoring 21 in the frame to stretch their lead to 45-15 going to the 4th. Pickens sealed their win in the 4th quarter with an 11-5 scoring run to take it, 56-20. With the win, the Nettes’ took home the runner up trophy and are now 2-2 on the season.

 

Every Nettes’ player the got into the game scored at least a point for the team. The Nettes held Copper Basin to just 7 2nd half points while scoring 32.

The Nettes will now prepare for 7-AAAA region play as they will welcome the LaFayette Lady Ramblers to the Dragons Den for the first true home game of the season Tuesday, Dec. 1st. Tip off scheduled for 6 p.m.

Dragons Get Come From Behind Win Against Copper Basin

Earlier this afternoon, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team traveled to Blue Ridge to take on the Cougars of Copper Basin in the third and final day of the Thanksgiving Tournament. A win meant a runner up spot and a .500 record going into region play next week for Pickens.

 

The Dragons offense got off to a quick start in the 1st quarter. Pickens held a 14-8 advantage going into the 2nd quarter. Copper Basin took control early in the 2nd quarter with an 8-0 run to take the lead over the Dragons 16-14. The two teams went back and forth for the rest of the half with the Cougars taking a 26-25 lead into the break.

 

A big highlight for Pickens came in the 3rd quarter when senior Tyler Garner picked up a loose ball, drove through the middle of the lane, and through down a thunderous dunk over two Copper Basin defenders. The Dragons used the dunk to propel themselves to take a 38-36 lead into the 4th quarter. The Cougars took a 48-41 lead with under 4 minutes left in the game and seemed to have the momentum. However, Pickens battled back and had a 53-51 lead. Copper Basin was unable to get off a final shot and the Dragons came away with a hard fought 53-51 win.

 

With the win, the Dragons finish the tournament at 2-1, and even up their season record at 2-2.

Dragons Drop Tough Game To Fannin

Last night, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team made the trek up 515 to Blue Ridge to take part in day 2 of the annual Thanksgiving Tournament. Their opponent, the host team, the Fannin County Rebels.

 

In the 1st quarter, the Dragons got off to a slow start while the Rebels offense caught a spark early. Fannin took a lead into the 2nd quarter of 22-6. The 2nd quarter saw Pickens get somethings going on offense. The Rebels however, just could not miss a shot they took. Fannin went into the break, up 37-16.

 

In the 3rd, it was more of what we saw in the first half. The Rebels outscored the Dragons 19-13 in the quarter to take a 56-29 lead into the 4th and final quarter of play. Offensively, the best quarter for Pickens was the 4th quarter as they scored 22 points. Fannin sealed this one up and got the win, 67-51.

Nettes’ Get First Win Of The Season Against Fannin

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team once again made the trip up to Blue Ridge to take part in day 2 of the annual Thanksgiving Tournament. Their opponents were the host team, the Fannin County Lady Rebels. Pickens came into the ball game searching for their first win on the young season.

 

After a slow start to begin the game for both teams, things picked up mid way through and towards the end of the frame. The Nettes’ took a 13-11 lead into the 2nd quarter. In a highly contested back and forth first half, Pickens held on to the lead going into the break, 24-21.

 

Defense played a big role for the Nettes’ in this game as they held the Lady Rebels to just 7 3rd quarter points. Pickens led after 3, 37-28. The Nettes increased their lead in the 4th to pull away. Allowing 14 2nd half points and scoring 25 points to get their first win of the season, 49-35.

Dragons Open Tournament With Win Over Bobcats

This past Saturday afternoon, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team went up to Blue Ridge to take part in the first day of the annual Thanksgiving Tournament. Pickens matched up with their arch rival, the Gilmer Bobcats.

 

In the first quarter, it went back and forth between the two teams as the opening stanza ended with the score tied at 13. The 2nd quarter nearly mirrored the 1st as both teams found offense. The Bobcats used a slight 22-19 quarter advantage over the Dragons to take a 35-32 lead into the half.

 

In the 3rd quarter, Pickens used a combination of offense (16-9 run) and press defense to take the from Gilmer, 48-44 going to the 4th. With just over 3 minutes left in the game, both teams were tied at 58. The Dragons from that point used timely offense and clutch free throws to seal the win, 69-63.

Nettes Drop Opening Tournament Game

This past Saturday, the PHS Dragonettes varsity basketball team traveled up to Blue Ridge to take part in day one of the annual Thanksgiving Tournament. Their opening game opponent would be none other than their arch rival, the Lady Cats of Gilmer.

 

In the 1st quarter, both teams starteed back and forth before the Lady Cats closed out the quarter on a run to take an 18-11 lead going to the 2nd. In the 2nd quarter, the Nettes found their offense as they outscored Gilmer 12-6 to cut the Lady Cat lead to just 24-23 heading into the break.

 

As we entered the 2nd half, both teams again went back and forth trading bucket after bucket. Pickens ended the 3rd quarter on an 11-10 to tie things up at 34 going to the 4th and final quarter. In the 4th, Gilmer got some key turnovers and used that to spring them to a 17-8 quarter run to take it, 52-41 over the Nettes.

Dragons Basketball Begins New Season at Dawson County

Last night, the PHS Dragons varsity basketball team traveled to Dawsonville to take on the Tigers of Dawson County. Coming off of their scrimmage against 6A Etowah, Pickens looked to start off their 2015-16 season with a road win.

 

The Dragons found success early with the help of senior Holden Roop. However, the Tigers were able to take the lead and pull away at the end of the 1st quarter leading it, 20-9. In the 2nd quarter, Dawson county used a 15-6 run to widen their lead heading into halftime, 35-15.

 

In the 3rd, Pickens got on a little run using a press defense to contribute to buckets on offense. The Dragons outscored the Tigers in the 3rd 13-9, but Dawson County still held the lead going to the 4th, 44-28. In the 4th, The Tigers used a 19-13 quarter run to seal up the win, 63-41 over Pickens.

Nettes’ Open 2015-16 Season At Dawson

Last night, the PHS Dragonettes basketball team traveled to Dawsonville to take on the Lady Tigers of Dawson County High School. With no seniors on this year’s team, the Nettes’ came into the ball game young, but excperienced as many of the girls that are now juniors and sophomores got a lot of playing time last season. The Lady Tigers are coming off of a tremendous season last year and came into this game ranked 7th in the AAA poll.

 

Dawson County jumped out early on the Nettes’ as the Lady Tigers forced several turnovers using their press defense. Pickens eventually got things going towards the end of the quarter, but found themselves down after one, 28-15. Dawson County used a 20-11 run in the 2nd quarter to take a 48-26 lead over the Nettes’ into the break.

 

In the 3rd, it was again the Lady Tigers defense giving Pickens fits. A 22-12 run in the 3rd stretched the Dawson County lead out to 70-38 going to the 4th and final quarter. In a shortened 4th quarter, the Lady Tigers used a 7-4 run to take this one over the Nettes’, 77-42.

Nettes Lose Final Tournament Game Finish Third

Last Tuesday, The Nettes varsity basketball team traveled to Gilmer High School to take on the host team, the Gilmer Lady Cats, in the final game of the Thanksgiving tournament. With a win, the Nettes would get a piece of the tournament title. A win for the Lady Cats, would give them the title outright.
